The Pampas, the ideal spot to look for Denisovans or Homo erectus


Following my post on the possibility of Denisovans expanding their territory and moving east, into America, one of the followers of my blog, Marcelo Bruyere wrote a comment to the post, suggesting that old sites such as those that would correspond to a Pleistocene peopling of America before the last glacial period would have to be located beyond the area scoured by the glaciers of ice ages that followed their migration 400,000 years (400 ky) ago. Sites located in temperate regions would be safe from the destructive effects of the glacial ice fields.


Marcelo mentioned the Cerutti Mastodon site which is 130 ky old which is in California, 32°S as an example and suggested that South America would also be a great place to search for such sites, but not in caves or rock shelters, which are the favorite haunt of archaeologists looking for ancient campsites. Instead, he says, these sites should be sought "in other environments; such as possible relicts of ancient plains bearing rivers and/or lacustrine systems, that could comply with the condition of having been originally developed in terrains well deep into the Pleistocene" and continues, proposing the Argentine plains known as the Pampean region as a suitable place to look for this type of sites.


The Pampa Region

The Pampas, whose name comes from the Native American Quechua language and means "plain", is a vast expansion of flat prairies originally covered with native temperate grasslands, with a very slight west to east incline, spanning 1.2 million km2 (460,000 sq. mi.). The region is outlined with a red line in the map below:

Its western flank rises to about 200 meters (600 ft.) into an arid area with an open savanna-like region of "monte" and "espinal", with caldén trees, that then becomes even more drier as it blends into the Cuyo Andean Region, and the Northern Patagonia. The eastern part is more humid and is lower. Two ancient mountain ranges from the Precambrian and Paleozoic jut out of the lowlands in south-central Buenos Aires province, the Sierra de la Ventana which reach their maximum altitude with the Cerro Tres Picos (1,240 m - 4.066 ft) and the Tandil hills with 500 m (1,600 ft), these continue beneath the overlying silt, and form the basement on which the plains were formed during the Cenozoic period. Sediments originating in the Andes mountain range, were eroded and transported east by the wind (aeolian) and rivers (fluvial) and deposited on the granite bedrock over the past 12 million years (Zárate & Folguera, 2009).


Of the different cycles of sedimentation, the one we are interested in is the third one, which took place during the "...late Pliocene-late Pleistocene circa 3.2 Ma- 0.040/0.030 Ma [it] includes deposits bearing Marplatan, Ensenadan and Bonaerian fossil remains. They are distributed in the Salado tectonic basin, forming the bedrock in which fluvial valleys are excavated." Zárate & Folguera, 2009. Marcelo points out that the "undulating" Pampa, which is an area located in the northeastern corner of Buenos Aires province, with low-lying hillocks (a "gently rolling landscape" (Zárate, 2002) that break the flat plains " is a particularly good example of a suitable one for this purpose because; a) it overlies a massive (30 meters thick) Pleistocene substrate whose geological record goes all the way down (although with hiatus) from 12/13 Ka to the vicinities of Matuyama/Gauss boundary (ca. 2,58 Ma), b) it is crossed by many rivers whose valleys are deeply incised into this substrate, and c) also presents some relict landscapes outcropping subaerially (albeit, conditionally accessible), whose geological levels are within Matuyama magnetic ages (>0.78 Ma)."


This region has produced many megafaunal fossils and also human remains corresponding to Paleoindians. To clarify the text, the Matuyama boundary is a period that lasted from 2.59 to 0.78 Ma and marked a reversal of the Earth's magnetic field. During this time, a compass wouldn't have pointed north, it would have pointed south. Point c) mentions that some of the deeper layers are accessible in this region, on the surface, exposed ("Subaerial").


It was in the banks of the rivers that cut across the plains, that the first megafaunal fossils were recovered during the late 18th century and sent back to Spain from the Colonial Buenos Aires: the Megatherium americanum described by Cuvier in 1796. These were considered antediluvian creatures. The banks of these rivers still provide fossils (Scanferla, 2013, Chichkoyan, 2022).


The mid Pleistocene sediments are not that deep. For instance Tófalo, 2011 reports "Present day soil is found at the top of the section. Its parental material was sampled at 1.2 m [4 ft] where an OSL dating yielded an age of 30 ± 4 kyr. Another OSL age >126 ± 10 kyr for a sample taken at 7.3 m [24 ft]" Sediments that could potentially contain Denisovan or erectus remains would be at that depth.


Interestingly, current research has looked into these locations and found old pre-Clovis tools dated to 30 to 40 ky ago. See Marcelo Toledo, 2017, whom I quote below. Toledo reported finding a flint tool that "was unambiguous as well as embedded into basal sand of the Red Luján sequence (a geological sedimentary layer), which have been dated between 25 and 30 ky BP... These preliminary results prove human presence towards 25-30 ky BP in the Luján valley." These tools are obviously man-made because there are no sources of stone or rocks nearby (these plains span hundreds of kilometers, and the nearest rock sources are over 200 km away (125 mi) and couldn't have reached this area in any other way other than by human transportation.

Eoliths

One hundred and forty years ago, Florentino Ameghino, who proposed an autochthonous origin, in America, for humans, who then migrated across the globe (one of these ancient human specimens was the Diprothomo platensis) supported his theory with fossils and early, cobble-styled tools that he had found similar tools along the Lujan River banks, and also bones of megafaunal animals that bore clear stone cut marks.


Ameghino called these primitive tools "eolithic" (Greek for "dawn stones"), refraining from using the term "paleolithic" because they differed substantially from the Acheulean industry found in Paleolithic Europe. These stones were old, and different as you can see in the following image:

And these sites are just scraping the surface, the most recent sedimentary layers, below are more, reaching down to almost 1 million years.


The idea that hominin remains from 50,000 to 800,000 years ago may be buried by tens of meters of silt in these open plains is exciting, and as we have seen, some proof has already been discovered.

Gault Site, Texas, USA : 16,000 to 21,000 years old


The paper about Gault site in TX, USA was published back in 2018. And it provides evidence of an early presence of humans in that area 16 to 20.000 years ago.


The authors show that stone tools that were dated by optically stimulated luminescence and the dates obtained are "~16 to 20 thousand years ago" they therefore suggest that this indicates "an early human occupation in North America before at least ~16 thousand years ago. Significantly, this assemblage exhibits a previously unknown, early projectile point technology unrelated to Clovis. Within a wider context, this evidence suggests that Clovis technology spread across an already regionalized, indigenous population." Therefore the Clovis people were not the first.

The authors unearthed stone tools that were fashioned using a technology that was distinct from the later Clovis tool technology, and is unique in America. They are old "from 21.7 ± 1.4 ka to 16.7 ± 1.1 ka." The paper concludes that "Gault Site demonstrates the presence of a previously unknown projectile point technology in North America before ~16 ka."

Cacao 1 site is 37 to 42,000 years old


An update with additional information regarding a post from October 2021, (Human hair 40,000 years old in Argentina (Cacao 1.A cave). I found a reference to a publication in a Conference that took place in 2023.


The paper was named Investigaciones en cueva Cacao 1.a (Antofagasta de la Sierra Catamarca): interdisciplinariedad y nuevas líneas de evidencias and was presented at a conference (I Jornadas de Arqueología de Antofagasta de la Sierra) on March 21, 2023. The event was organized by the Universidad Nacional de Catamarca amd was published in the Libro de resúmenes de las I Jornadas de Arqueología de Antofagasta de la Sierra (book) by that university (ISBN: 978-950-746-280-1).Source - Conicet


The paper's abstract reads:


The Antofagasta de la Sierra micro-region is characterized by a diversity of archaeological sites that have occupations that date back to the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. The site Cueva Cacao 1.A (CC1.A) is set at the confluence of the Curuto and Cacao canyons. It is a stone shelter that has occupations from different periods. Inside of it we found a stratum composed mainly of vegetation remains and fine compact sedimentary material, originated by the disaggregation and trampling of the feces of extinct fauna (Layer 5). Stratigraphic excavations in this layer allowed the recovery of formatized artifacts and debris from the working of different stone varieties (vulcanites and obsidians), bone remains of extinct megafauna, and fibers of various species. Carbon-14 dating of this stratum gave a range of approximately 42,000–37,000 years BP.


The date of 42 to 37 thousand years before present is really ancient, among the oldest in the Americas, but this paper hasn't been mentioned in the media, it lies in an obscure publication, ignored.

A site dated at 37,000 years ago in the Colorado Plateau!


An interesting title for a new paper: Human Occupation of the North American Colorado Plateau ∼37,000 Years Ago by Timothy Rowe et al. (Front. Ecol. Evol., 07 July 2022, Sec. Paleontology https://doi.org/10.3389/fevo.2022.903795).


The abstract gives this very ancient site an age of 38,900–36,250 cal BP and 37,000 years ago is well before the 15Ky usually accepted by the Out of Beringia theory that is mainstream orthodoxy regarding the peopling of America!:


" Calibrating human population dispersals across Earth’s surface is fundamental to assessing rates and timing of anthropogenic impacts and distinguishing ecological phenomena influenced by humans from those that were not. Here, we describe the Hartley mammoth locality, which dates to 38,900–36,250 cal BP by AMS 14C analysis of hydroxyproline from bone collagen. We accept the standard view that elaborate stone technology of the Eurasian Upper Paleolithic was introduced into the Americas by arrival of the Native American clade ∼16,000 cal BP. It follows that if older cultural sites exist in the Americas, they might only be diagnosed using nuanced taphonomic approaches. We employed computed tomography (CT and μCT) and other state-of-the-art methods that had not previously been applied to investigating ancient American sites. This revealed multiple lines of taphonomic evidence suggesting that two mammoths were butchered using expedient lithic and bone technology, along with evidence diagnostic of controlled (domestic) fire. That this may be an ancient cultural site is corroborated by independent genetic evidence of two founding populations for humans in the Americas, which has already raised the possibility of a dispersal into the Americas by people of East Asian ancestry that preceded the Native American clade by millennia. The Hartley mammoth locality thus provides a new deep point of chronologic reference for occupation of the Americas and the attainment by humans of a near-global distribution. "


Slowly but surely evidence is supporting the notion of an ancient peopling of America.

Was a Denisovan skull found in Harbin?


Another species? or maybe a Denisovan? A paper (The Innovation, DOI: 10.1016/j.xinn.2021.100130 and DOI: 10.1016/j.xinn.2021.100132, Massive cranium from Harbin in northeastern China establishes a new Middle Pleistocene human lineage) published today, describes a crania discovered in 1933 in Harbin, northern China, but only re-discovered a few years ago, and studied now.

The paper cautiously suggests in a covert manner that this Harbin skull may be a Denisovan one:

"The sister relationship between Harbin and Xiahe, as identified by Bayesian inference (but not parsimony analysis, see the supplemental information), is particularly interesting. The Xiahe mandible shows some proteomic features of the Denisovans, who were informally called “Homo sapiens altaiensis” or “Homo altaiensis,” and sediments from Baishiya Cave have yielded Denisovan mtDNA. The Harbin M2 also matches the known permanent Denisovan molars in size and root morphology, and, ever since the discovery of Denisovans, Asian Middle Pleistocene hominins, such as Dali, Jinniushan, and Xujiayao, have been suspected to represent an East Asian population of the Denisovans"

The remains have been dated to "a minimum age ... of ∼146 ka"

Regarding divergence from the Homo sapiens line, it has some interesting findings: (bold font is mine)

"The results of the Bayesian tip-dating analyses suggest that the Harbin and Xiahe fossils shared a common ancestor ∼188 ka (397–155 ka), and the clade, including the Harbin cranium and H. sapiens shared a common ancestor at ∼949 ka (1,041.41–875.25 ka). The Neanderthal-H. sapiens divergence time in our analysis was ∼1,007 ka (1,114–919 ka). This estimation falls in the range based on mtDNAs for the split between the basal Neanderthal (Sima de los Huesos) and the H. sapiens lineage, but is much older than the estimation based on nuclear DNAs for the splits between the Neanderthal and H. sapiens lineages. However, it is possible that this younger estimated divergence date is an artifact of statistical averaging between “super-archaic” and “recent gene flow” events. The common ancestor of the H. sapiens OTUs (NOTE: OTU is an "Operational Taxonomic Unit", and the term means that the beings under study share a given set of observed characters). included in our analysis is as old as ∼770 ka (922–622 ka), suggesting that the H. sapiens clade has a much deeper origin time than previously estimated. The Eurasian H. sapiens OTUs share a common ancestor ∼416 ka (534–305 ka) old. Outside of Africa, however, the earliest known H. sapiens fossil is only ∼210 ka.
There is a large time gap between the hypothetical common ancestor of Eurasian H. sapiens and the actual fossil record, from the Bayesian tip-dating analysis. One plausible hypothesis is that the ancestral population of Eurasian H. sapiens may have diversified in Africa for many millennia before they dispersed into Eurasia. Genetic studies on ancient DNA suggest that the initial genetic exchanges between Neanderthals and H. sapiens occurred between 468 and 219 ka, or between ∼370 and 100 ka, and the introgression may have originated through gene flow from an African source. Interestingly, not only does the estimated time of the introgression event between Neanderthals and H. sapiens roughly overlap our prediction for the age of the common ancestor of Eurasian H. sapiens, but the African origin of the introgression is also consistent with our African ancestral population hypothesis.

Africa is the major source of Homo dispersals. In total, ∼40% of all the dispersals are from Africa, while Africa also receives ∼22% dispersals from Asia and Europe. Instead of a unidirectional “out of Africa” model, a multi-directional “shuttle dispersal model” is more likely to explain the complex phylogenetic connections among African and Eurasian Homo species/populations.
"

Let's hope that DNA can be extracted from the skull, it could confirm that this man was in fact a Denisovan.

130ky Cerutti site stone tools validated as made by human beings?


In April 2017 we posted about the Cerutti mastodon site in California, with its "stone tools" dated to 130,000 years ago.

An article (Raman and optical microscopy of bone micro-residues on cobbles from the Cerutti mastodon site) published this month, reports finding bone micro residues on the cobbles found next to the broken mastodon bones, suggesting that these were used as tools to break the bones open and not just a chance accumulation of stones and broken bones.


The abstract states:


"Cobbles from the Cerutti Mastodon (CM) site have impact marks and usewear suggesting that mastodon bones were placed on stone anvils and struck with stone hammers to produce two concentrations of broken bones and stones. Critics have suggested that the stones may have broken by rolling down slopes rather than in situ at the two concentrations. Our analysis of two cobbles (pegmatite CM-254 and andesite CM-281) identifies bone micro-residues that are not evenly distributed over the cobbles, and are unlikely to have been transferred from sediment or from passive contact with adjacent macro-bones. Bone micro-residues on cobble CM-254 were recovered from surfaces associated with usewear, but were absent from the naturally broken surface found in direct contact with a mastodon rib. In addition, bone micro-residues on cobble CM-281 were recovered from upward facing locations with impact marks and other usewear; but were absent on the downward facing surface. Bone micro-residues are absent in sediment away from the bone concentrations. These new data support the argument that the associated concentration of broken stones and mastodon bones is in situ, and that bones in this concentration were likely broken by the pegmatite cobble (comprising CM-254 and other fragments), when it struck mastodon bones placed on the andesite cobble CM-281. These findings add to the totality of evidence that supports human agency rather than geological processes as the driver responsible for the CM taphonomic pattern. "

Nature article supports arrival of first Americans as far back as 57 Ky ago


An article published in Nature today (The timing and effect of the earliest human arrivals in North America Becerra-Valdivia, L., Higham, T. Nature (2020). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-020-2491-6 ) finds that:


"The data obtained show that humans were probably present before, during and immediately after the Last Glacial Maximum (about 26.5–19 thousand years ago)2,3 but that more widespread occupation began during a period of abrupt warming, Greenland Interstadial 1 (about 14.7–12.9 thousand years before 2000)4. We also identify the near-synchronous commencement of Beringian, Clovis and Western Stemmed cultural traditions, and an overlap of each with the last dates for the appearance of 18 now-extinct faunal genera. Our analysis suggests that the widespread expansion of humans through North America was a key factor in the extinction of large terrestrial mammals."


It is a first step in the right direction, and clearly states: "If transatlantic migration is set aside and an Asian origin assumed, the antiquity and distribution of the early sites suggest that the initial crossing of the 48th parallel north occurred either (i) during the later part of Marine Isotope Stage 3 (57–29 ka)36, when ice and sea level estimates37–39 indicate that land passage through Beringia was unlikely or interrupted, and an ice-free corridor between the Laurentide and Cordilleran Ice Sheets was probably present39 (with evidence of terrestrial landscapes occurring between 48 and 40 ka40) or (ii) during the LGM terminus, when the Bering land bridge was viable but the ice-free corridor was inaccessible41,42. Both possibilities sug-gest the earliest arrivals to North America had some degree of littoral adaptation."


The Clovis First theory has bean dealt a great blow! The authors write: "the previously accepted model (termed ‘Clovis-first’)—suggesting that the first inhabitants of the Americas were linked with the Clovis tradition, a complex marked by distinctive fluted lithic points1—has been effectively refuted".


It mentions several Pre-Clovis sites: "pre-Clovis sites show the earli-est evidence for cultural occupation in stratigraphic component C of Chiquihuite Cave (Mexico) at 33,150–31,405 cal., before the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) (from 26.5 to 20–19 ka2,3). Several sites appear to be occupied later, during or immediately after the LGM. These include Gault (26,435–17,385cal.), Meadowcroft Rockshelter (24,335–18,620cal.) and Cactus Hill (20,585–18,970cal.) (Fig.2a). In eastern Beringia, Bluefish Caves is represented by a single date obtained on a humanly modified bone sample (24,035–23,310cal.) dating squarely to the LGM..


It is encouraging, and should undo the dark work of William Henry Holmes of the Smithsonian Institution, Thomas Chamberlin of the United States Geological Survey and Ales Hrdlicka (of the Smithsonian) who refused to accept that humans had reached America before the end of the last Ice Age. They imposed their ideas and only accepted an earlier (but not too early) date when the Folsom points were found in 1927 followed by the Clovis ones in the 1930s. They were irrefutable confirmation of ancient humans in the Americas during the Pleistocene.


But pushing the dates beyond 12-13,000 years has proven difficult. Let's hope this article marks a new trend in the field.

Hueyatlaco the controversial Mexican site at lake Valsequillos


The Hueyatlaco site in Mexico (map with location) has been controversial since it was first studied because the excavations conducted there back in the early 1960s (1962, 1964 and 1966) by C. Irwin-Williams and on occasions also Juan Armenta Camacho, found stone artifacts -later lost by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) located in Mexico City- that were set in extremely old soil layers.


These tools were dated to an age of several hundreds of thousands of years. Far too old to have been made by Homo sapiens.

These early dates were unnaceptable because they contradicted orthodox findings. So they were rejected on the basis that Uranium had leached into the artifacts and altered their age as measured by the uranium series age technique.


An alternate measuring method was used (fission track dating), and the outcome was the same (Geologic Evidence for Age of Deposits at Hueyatlaco Archeological Site, Valsequillo, Mexico, Virginia Steen-McIntyre, Roald Fryxell and Harold E. Malde, DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/0033-5894(81)90124-1. Published online by Cambridge University Press: 20 January 2017, Quaternary Research, Volume 16, Issue 1July 1981 , pp. 1-17). Below is the Abstract of this paper:


"Abstract
Direct tracing of beds during excavation in May 1973, confirmed that the artifact-bearing layers at Hueyatlaco underlie 10 m of fine-grained, water-laid deposits that constitute part of the wide-spread Valsequillo gravels. Dissection of these deposits by the adjacent Río Atoyac has reached a depth of 50 m. The stratigraphic section at Hueyatlaco includes four distinctive tephra units. The oldest one occupies a small channel in a series of cut-and-fill stream deposits that have yielded bifacial tools. It lies more than a meter above flat-lying, fine-grained beds from which edge-retouched tools have been recovered. The three other tephra units occur higher in the section.
Fission-track ages on zircon phenocrysts from two of the younger tephra layers (370,000 ± 200,000 and 600,000 ± 340,000 yr, 2σ) agree with concordant uranium-series dates for a camel pelvis that was found associated with bifacial tools at Hueyatlaco (245,000 ± 40,000 yr by 230Th and > 180,000 yr by 231Pa). These dates are compatible with the depth of burial and subsequent dissection of the Hueyatlaco deposits, as well as with the degree of hydration of volcanic glass shards and with the extent of etching of heavy-mineral phenocrysts from within the tephra layers.
These findings suggest to us that further search for archaeological remains in deposits as old as those at Hueyatlaco would be warranted.
"


Silvia Gonzalez from the Liverpool John Moores University disputes these early dates, but has agreed to dates which are also older than those currently accepted by orthodox science: 40,000 years.


In The Late Pleistocene Human Occupation of Mexico Silvia Gonzalez and David Huddart (FUMDHAMentos VII pp 237-259) discuss the older ages proposed by Steen-McIntyre et al, but also mentions several sites in Mexico with ages of up to 40 kya. One of them is the Toluquilla footprint layer, which has both animal and human foot and paw prints in volcanic ash deposited at Lake Valsequilo. This ash erupted from the Tolquilla volcano roughly 40 Kya:


Gonzalez and Huddart write:


"The stratigraphic context and geochronological control for the Xalnene Ash is shown in Figs.11 and 12 and discussed in detail in Gonzalez et al. (2006a). The Toluquilla Footprint Layer has been dated to 38 ±8.57 Ka (sample number: TW04-10) using Optically Stimulated Luminescence dating of baked, silty xenoliths within the ash which were interpreted as being baked at the time of the eruption, which reset the time signal. The ash layer is older than the stratigraphically younger, fluvial sediments from the Valsequillo Gravels exposed in the Barranca Caulapan (Fig.12) where there are radiocarbon dates between 9.15 ±0.5 Ka (W1896) from the top of the sequence to 38.9 ±0.8 Ka (Oxa-14355) on a mollusc shell at its base, as well as an Electron Spin Resonance date on a mammoth molar and U-Series dates on bones. All of the dates obtained with different methods are in agreement."

The only work to be published at a date more or less close to the time of the discoveries was written by Juan Armenta Camacho Vestigios de labor humana en huesos de animales extintos de Valsequillo, with his paper presented at the XXXV Congreso Internacional de Americanistas, Puebla, 1978. On its page 111, it mentions the controversial -and other not so controversial dates- for the animal bones with evidence of human activities on them (cuts, crushing, torsion breakage, perforations and even inscriptions).

The question seems to remain open: we have the very ancient dates, but we also have a firm refusal to accept them. Mainstream science simply ignores these findings which otherwise would undermine the neat construction built on the assumption that America was first peopled not more than 15-20,000 years ago.

Australasian signal in the DNA of Amerindians


BBack in 2015 (Skoglund P, Mallick S, Bortolini MC, et al. Genetic evidence for two founding populations of the Americas. Nature. 2015;525(7567):104–108. doi:10.1038/nature14895) an article showed that " show that some Amazonian Native Americans descend partly from a Native American founding population that carried ancestry more closely related to indigenous Australians, New Guineans and Andaman Islanders than to any present-day Eurasians or Native Americans. This signature is not present to the same extent or at all in present-day Northern and Central Americans or a ~12,600 year old Clovis genome, suggesting a more diverse set of founding populations of the Americas than previously accepted.".


This is quite a remarkable discovery, and the authors quickly clarified that "These results do not imply that an unmixed population related anciently to Australasians migrated to the Americas. While this is a formal possibility, an alternative model that we view as plausible is that the 'Population Y' (we use 'Population Y' after Ypykuéra, which means 'ancestor' in the Tupi language family spoken by the Suruí and Kartiana) that contributed Australian related ancestry to Amazonians was already mixed with a lineage related to First Americans at the time it reached Amazonia."


They concluded that "he genetic data allow us to say with confidence that Population Y ancestry arrived south of the ice sheets anciently: the fact that the geographically diverse Andamanese, Australian and New Guinean populations are all similarly related to this source suggests that the population is no longer extant, and the absence of long-range admixture linkage disequilibrium suggests that the population mixture did not occur in the last few thousand years."


Last year another study (Reconstructing the Deep Population History of Central and South America Posth C. et al., (2018) Cell, Vol 175:5 P1185-1197.E22, Nov. 15, 2018) looked into the peopling of America but didn't manage to find this Australasian signal in "ancient remains" that they analyzed:


"failure to find significant evidence of Australasian or Paleolithic East Asian affinities in any of the ancient Central and South American individuals raises the question of what ancient populations could have contributed the Population Y signal in Surui and other Amazonian groups and increases the previously small chance that this signal—despite the strong statistical evidence for it—was a false-positive."


But shortly after another paper was published in Science (Early human dispersals within the Americas, Moreno-Mayar et al., Science 07 Dec 2018: Vol. 362, Issue 6419, eaav2621 DOI: 10.1126/science.aav2621) that sequenced the DNA of ancient remains from all across America, Alaska to Patagonia and found that prior to the main migration into America, there was an earlier one, with Australasian traits:


"... there are genomic and archaeological hints of an earlier human presence. How these early groups are related or structured, particularly those with Australasian ancestry, remains unknown.... [there were] multiple independent, geographically uneven migrations into South America. One such migration provides clues of Late Pleistocene Australasian ancestry in South America, [which] contributed to present-day South American ancestry."


"... we find that the Amazonian Surui share a larger proportion of alleles with Australasian groups (represented by Papuans, Australians and Andaman Islanders), with respect to Mixe. Lagoa Santa yielded similar results to those obtained for the Surui. When compared to Mesoamerican groups (Mixe and Huichol), Lagoa Santa also shares a larger proportion of alleles with Australasian groups but not with other Eurasians."


Remarkably, these first wave individuals with Austronesian genes somehow reached South America without leaving any traces in North America: "[a populaton] that harbored an Australasian signal in the Late Pleistocene and reached South America, yet left no apparent traces in North America".

The Brazilian researchers’ contribution to the study was fundamental. Among the 49 individuals from which fossil DNA was taken, seven skeletons dated to between 10,100 and 9,100 years ago came from Lapa do Santo, a rock shelter in Lagoa Santa. A new bust has replaced Luzia in the Brazilian scientific pantheon. Caroline Wilkinson, a forensic anthropologist at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK and a disciple of Neave, has produced a facial reconstruction of one of the individuals exhumed at Lapa do Santo. The reconstruction was based on a retrodeformed digital model of the skull.

Also in regard to the Caroline Wilkinson reconstruction. None of the articles, not the one you sourced said the Caroline Wilkinson reconstruction. looks more Asian. The eye fold is not depicted Asian. None of the features are particularly Asian. The nose is not as flat as many Asians. It's true that the ancestors of Native are believed to be Asian but the reconstruction is intended to depict someone looking Native American and though they have Asian ancestry they dont always look exactly like,Asians. People have said it looks racially ambiguous or could even pass for a dark skinned European or Middle Eastern person, Nevertheless these reconstructions include speculation from the forensic artist

My remark on the features of the reconstructed face still stands however. The overall impression of the original bust is that of an African, now it is more Eurasian, it does not look like the typical Amerindian people one sees -today- in South America which have distinct features.

Early man in Northern Yukon 300,000 years ago


This paper dating back to the 1980s: Stratigraphic, Sedimentological and Faunal Evidence for the Occurrence of Pre-Sangamonian artifacts in Northern Yukon by Jopling, AV, WN Irving, and BF Beebe. 1981.Arctic 34 (1): 3-33, reports evidence of ancient human presence in Yukon - Alaska. An excerpt from the paper is very interesting:


"... It is interesting that these early human inhabitants predate the extinction in Europe and western Asia of most or all populations of Homo sapiens neandertalensis. Indeed, if Unit 1 is of Illinoian = Riss age, these artefacts probably are older than Mousterian cultures and Neandertal Man. Elsewhere, Irving (1978a, b) has commented on a plausible relationship of these early cultures to the Early Palaeolithic of the Far East, ar elationship anticipated by Chard (e.g. 1963) and more recently by Rouse (19801, although terminologies differ. Bryan (1978) has published an unusual human calotte from Brazil which beckons renewed attention in this connection. In a recent announcement Chia et al. (1979) describe a large collection of vertebrate fossils and stone artefacts found near Hsuchiayao in Yangkao County, Shansi, China. They attribute the entire collection to an age comparable with that of the Riss (Illinoian) glaciation. The associated human skeletal remains are said to be intermediate between Homo erectus and Homo neandertalensis (sic). Elsewhere Medvedev (1979) appears to have documented the northward progress ofHomo sp. as far as the Aldan Plateau in Siberia, 200 000 or more years ago. We must now, therefore, entertain seriously the possibility that a variant of Homo erectus reached the Western Hemisphere, as recently suggested by Yoshizaki (pers. comm., 1981). If true, this must profoundly affect both studies of the origin of Homo sapiens and studies of New World populations..."

That is not too surprising, that people were in California making stone tools about 25 thousand years ago. The first things I found looked pretty "fresh" and were all of a certain style. If you think about it, this means they were part of the cobble production of the last ice age, which means they were tools made during a previous ice age - around 60 thousand years ago. So that's my story: stone tools made from glacial cobbles which themselves got turned back into cobbles. It means there were people in California making stone tools two ice ages ago."
