Jinsitai Cave China - Neanderthal tools 40 kya


In yesterday's post about the habitats of Neanderthals and Denisovans where I mentioned a lone outpost of Neanderthals in Northeastern China known as Jinsitai Cave, I recalled that I wrote a short post about it back in 2019. Today we will revisit this spot, and learn what else has been discovered and published about it.


Originally described by Feng Li et al., in 2018 (Li, F., Kuhn, S. L., Chen, F., Wang, Y., Southon, J., Peng, F., Shan, M., Wang, C., Ge, J., Wang, X., Yun, T., & Gao, X. (2018). The easternmost Middle Paleolithic (Mousterian) from Jinsitai Cave, North China. Journal of Human Evolution, 114, 76–84. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhevol.2017.10.004). These researchers found similarities between the tools found at Jintai and those from Altai (3,000 km or nearly 1870 mi. west). This could imply that there was a cultural bond between people living in both locations, or that they were the same group. The tools themselves resembled the Mousterian technology used by Neanderthals in Western Eurasia. Were they made by Neanderthals? They could have also been made by Denisovans or even modern humans.


No definite Neanderthal remains have been found in Eastern Asia, but the tools found at Jinsitai are Mousterian-like. They were dated to around 45,000 years ago (47-42 ky) which is relatively recent. At that time modern humans had already left Africa and had spread across Eurasia. The Neanderthals used an older Middle Paleolithic stone knapping technique while modern humans had newer, Upper Paleolithic industries.


They lived there until around 39,000 years ago (40-37 ky) and moved on, or were replaced by others.


The cave itself is located in northern China, close to the border with Mongolia. (35°14'23.4" N, 115°28'32.7" E), see it in Google Maps.


First excavated in 2000-2001 and described by Wang et al. 2010, who found 5,000 tools, but dug up almost the whole cave, disturbing most of its sediments. Wang reported that there were different layers showing distinct stone tools: "Three cultural layers come down in one continuous line. The Lower cultural stratum is dominated by the Small Tool Industry. A lot of cobble tools and Levallois tools are found in the Middle cultural stratum. The Microblade Industry in Upper cultural stratum is superior to the Small Tool Industry, according to the tool types, retouched technique and selected raw materials." Howver Feng Li says that the information was limited, and the dig used poor methods. So they went back to reassess the site. Some of the tools that were unearthed are shown below.

Another paper, by Wang et al., 2023 mentions that "the upper layers contained a Late Upper Palaeolithic assemblage of microblades and bifacially thinned points, alongside the traditional core-and-flake (small flakes) industry which is typical in contemporaneous sites in northern China. The lower layers were dominated by core-and-flake industry, while some distinctive Levallois flakes were described as Mousterian-like artefacts. Some researchers regard the presence of this Mousterian-like industry at Jinsitai as evidence of a population dispersal or technological diffusion from the west."


This study focused on dating animal bones and confirmed that the bone collagen and radiocarbon show that humans occupied the site starting around 47,000 to 44,000 years ago, and continued there until the Holocene. They found camel bones, dated to 37-20 ky BP an unusual species, showing that humans not only hunted larger prey like mammoths, but also mid-sized animals.


Recent research by Khatsenovich et al., 2023 describes a site where Middle Paleolithic tools were found, located in in southern Mongolia. It is the Tsagaan Agui Cave in the Gobi Altai Mountains (44°42'53.3" N, 101°10'13.4" E, see it in Google Maps). The authors report that "Preliminary technological and typological analyses reveal the non-Levallois Mousterian character of the Middle Paleolithic industry at Tsagaan Agui Cave" this is a lithic industry that is characteristic of Neanderthals, who created it 300 ky ago. The Tsagaan Agui cave is ~1000 km west (660 mi) from Jinsitai, and roughly the same distance from Denisova Cave, which is further west, in the Altai (1200 km - 740 mi)


This, together with other findings published in 2025 (see my post Neanderthals in China 55 ky ago) show that the human landscape in Eastern Asia was dynamic at the time that the first people reached America. 40,000 years ago, modern humans were walking across Siberia and we have the Tianyuan remains (40 ky) and Ust'Ishim man (45 ky) date from this period. It is concievable that Neanderthals had been living in China for hundreds of thousands of years, and that they could have advanced northeast to Beringia and into America.

Homo erectus reached China 600 ky earlier than previously believed


Continuning with this series of posts on new findings in Asia, a paper published on February 18, 2026 (Hua Tu et al. (2026). The oldest in situ Homo erectus crania in eastern Asia: The Yunxian site dates to ~1.77 Ma. Sci. Adv. 12, eady2270. DOI:10.1126/sciadv.ady2270) reports that three skulls belonging to Homo erectus recovered from Yunxian, China were dated to an age of 1.77 million years. This is roughly 600,000 years older than previous estimates.


This new dating is very relevant because it shows a rapid expansion of these hominids across Asia: The oldest remains of erectus are found in Georgia (the Dmanisi site) and are 1.78 to 1.85 Ma. The remains from Indonesia are younger, for instance those from Sanigran are 1.5 to 1.66 Ma., and the age assigned to Chinese remains is close to 1.3 Ma.


Interestingly, this paper mentions two sites in China older than 2.1 million years: "Further, the earliest archaeological traces, as represented by Xihoudu [~2.4 Ma;] and Shangchen [~2.1 Ma]." This could imply a very early out of Africa migration of austraolpithecines perhaps! (see my post on erectus and australopiths in Dmanisi, Georgia).


Yunxian site is on the Han River, in Central China. The paper concludes that:


"The age for Yunxian also indicates that H. erectus at ~1.77 Ma was much more widespread than just Dmanisi in Georgia, although the latter site, at the top of the Olduvai subchron (1.78 to 1.85 Ma), should be slightly older. This supports a rapid dispersal model of H. erectus through Asia beginning after 2 Ma. As the dates for these hominin sites continue to be pushed back in time, it would suggest that the chronological gap between the earliest archaeology at sites like Xihoudu [~2.43 Ma] and Shangchen [~2.1 Ma] and hominin paleontology in China is quickly narrowing. Questions remain, however, as to when and where H. erectus initially appeared and could they have been among the earliest occupants at some of these sites in China and elsewhere that now date to the early Early Pleistocene. If not, then should we be considering alternative hominins as the possible earliest occupants of Asia, particularly because the earliest sites in Asia now predate the traditionally accepted appearance of Homo ergaster/H. erectus (~1.9 Ma). The dates for Yunxian presented here represent a step forward to addressing such questions."


An earlier presence of Homo or australopithecines in East Asia opens the door to a continued migration into America 1.7 to 2.1 million years ago.

Bark Cloth among the Mesoamericans (amate)


Today's post is part of the series on paper made from beaten bark in the Americas, Asia, and Polynesia, and the possible common trans-pacific origin for this prehistoric industry.


Yesterday's post looked into the British Columbian and Alaskan beaten bark traditions. This post will explore the Mesoamerican paper.


Maguey

Maguey or agave (Agave americana) is well known because its starches, after processing, become alcohoic beverages like pulque, tequila, and mezcal. The natives used them for many purposes, from construction and food, to medicine and as a source of textile fiber and paper. Below is a picture of a maguey.

During the conquest of the Aztec empire, chroniclers like Francisco López de Gomara (Historia de la Conquista de México, p.449) described the use of maguey fiber. de Gomara wrote in 1552: "Metl is a tree that some call maguey and others call cardón... From the leaves of this plant they make paper, which is used everywhere for sacrifices and painters. They also make espadrilles, mats, blankets, girths, halters, and finally, it is hemp and is spun."


Friar Toribio de Motolinia (1482-1569), in his Memoriales (p. 317) gives a similar account, calling the maguey "metl": "From those maguey leaves, thread for sewing is obtained; they also make cords, ropes, hawsers, girths, and halters, and everything made from hemp is made from metl. They make clothing and footwear from it, because the Indians' footwear is apostolic, for they are properly sandals: the Indians call them cactli. They also make espadrilles like those of Andalusia. They make blankets and capes from this metl... From these agave leaves they make a paper of glued cotton, as thin as a fine veil, and on this paper, resting on top of an agave stalk, they carve all their drawings, and it is one of the principal tools of their trade."


In the 1700s Francisco Javier Clavijero also mentioned the use of maguey for paper manufacture. (Source) on p. 383 and 420. It also provided fiber for clothes (p. 383). He also described the use of paper as garments, and flags in relgious ceremonies and funerals (p.317, 330).


Clavijero describes how they made paper from maguey leaves, and from a palm called iczotl (p. 410) he added that "I have held in my hands many sheets of this Mexican paper. It is quite similar to European cardboard, although much softer and smoother, and one can write on it comfortably. The sheets of this paper were enormous."

Regarding maguey cloth, the image below shows a man selling maguey cloth known as áyatl. The text on the upper side of the image says "maguey thread". The Spanish text captioning the picture is the following: "And the blankets she sells are white, coated with dough, burnished, well-crafted, and have wide or narrow legs, long or elongated, thick or fat, stiff or sturdy; in short, all the maguey blankets that have designs. Some she sells that are very sparse, that look like nothing more than a headscarf, such as the very thin blankets woven with nequén fiber, and those made of twisted thread. And on the contrary, some are thick and very dense, and well-crafted, and others coarse and thick, whether made of pita or maguey thread." This image and text are part of the Florentine Codex (Book 10, folio 53r), compiled in Spanish and Nahuatl languages around 1575.

Ficus Tree paper, Amate or Amal


Other contemporary writers reported paper; Díaz del Castillo (1496-1584), in his True History of the Conquest of New Spain, tells about the conquest of the Aztec empire, in which he took part, and mentions "amal" (p. 160): "I remember that at that time his [Montezuma's] chief steward was a great chieftain, whom we named Tapia, and he kept an account of all the income that was brought to Montezuma with his books, made of their paper, which is called amal, and they had a large house of these books."


Amate paper was used for writing by the Mesoamerican pre-Hispanic civilizations, the Mayas, and the Aztecs its use survived the Spanish conquest and was used well into the 16th century, when European paper-making techniques replaced it.


Amate was made from the bark of trees belonging to the ficus genus, the red and the white jonote (Heliocarpus appendiculatus) called amacuahuitl in the Nahuatl language.


The bark was stripped from the trees, soaked in water and cooked. Then it was rinsed and pressed dry. The bark fiber was placed on a wooden board and beaten with wood or stone beaters called amahuitequini. The bark fiber was flattened and spread, softened and given a relatively smooth texture. Then it was dried. Color of amate ranged from white to pale yellow.

Paper manufacturing was an industry, its use was widespread in the Aztec region in the 15th century. Part of the tribute paid by those conquered by the city-states of Texcoco, Tenochtitlan and Tlacopan was in the form of paper, up to 400,000 reams of paper each year, produced in more than 50 villages as detailed in the Mendoza codex, a detail of tax revenue. (see p. 50, 51, 52, 53, etc.)


Amate was used not only in ceremonies, but also for records. The famous "codices", of which roughly 500 have survived the massive burning of books conducted by the Spaniards (the Inquisition and the Catholic church wanted to erradicate all traces of the pagan religions).

Maguey, Yucca, Jonote and Fusang (T'ung) Tree


Were the maguey or the jonote the trees described in the Fusang account (a mysterious land to the East of China, perhaps America?).


The original Fusang text mentions the paper and the tree: "The kingdom of Fusang lies 20,000 li east from Tahan, and directly east from China. The name of the country is derived from the tree of this name (Fusang), which grows there in abundance. Its leaves resembles those of the tree T'ung. The young sprouts are like those of the bamboo, and are eaten. The fruit resembles a pear, and is of a red colour. Cloth is made out of the bark, and paper is also prepared from it" (p. 168).


The T'ung tree is the Paulownia tomentosa (more on the T'ung in this external link), and looks similar to the jonote trees, so maybe the Buddhist monk thought they were the same species.

The Chinese knew about America before 1492


Continuing with the subject of my previous post, on the possible sailing of Chinese voyagers from Asia to America, I found an article that suggests that Chinese knew about America before 1430 AD, that is, several decades before Christopher Columbus set out from Spain on his voyage of "discovery".

The Map


The article looks into a map called the "Chinese World Map" (Kunyu Wanguo Quantu), which was presented to the Chinese Emperor Wanli in 1602 by an Italian Jesuit priest Matteo Ricci. The map's text is entirely written in Chinese.

In this article, the author analyzes and compares this map with others made by Europeans (contemporaneous world maps by Mercator (1569), Ortelius (1570) , Mercator's Arctic map (1595), and Plancius (1594)) and concludes that the Chinese map isn't a copy of these European ones. It is an original Chinese creation.


Based on the map's precision and location of the continents, the place names, and geographic information it contains, Lee concludes that:


"Kunyu Wanguo Quantu, the 1602 Chinese world map, is labeled entirely in Chinese. It is either translated from European maps or based on original Chinese surveys and records. [It] is much more accurate and detailed than maps by Ortelius, Mercator and Plancius. Ricci could not have updated American geography known only 200 years before their “discovery”. Ricci can be further excluded as an author because the pre-Renaissance geography and absence of Papal States in Europe are incompatible with Ricci’s status as a Jesuit of Renaissance Italy. Since Ricci’s collabora- tor Li Zhizao did not update the geography of China, the survey must be completed by Chinese well before Ricci and Li’s time. The geography of China on Kunyu Wanguo Quantu is pre-1430. The original Kunyu Wanguo Quantu should be a summary of surveys during Admiral Zheng He’s first six voyages (1405-1424) to prepare for the last voyage. After Zheng He’s death in 1433, China did not have the incentive and support for world exploration or construction of world maps..."


Lee suggests that the original map was completed around 1430, over 60 years before Columbus set out from Spain on his first voyage across the Atlantic.


The 1430 date comes from different pieces of evidence: (1) the Chinese text written on Spain says that "this map is drawn “some 70 years after the first communication with Europe", and the first European diplomatic mission to the Chinese empire took place in 1342-1347 (the Papal legation under the leadership of Giovanni de' Marignolli). (2) The Chinese part of the map is relevant for the Emperor Yongle (1403-1424) as it shows places he conducted military campaigns in, and furthermore, definitely dating of the map. (3) Admiral Zheng's voyages timeline with its discoveries and surveys coincide with this date.

Back in 2009 I posted my criticism on the theory put forward by Gavin Menzies, in his book 1421 The year China discovered the World. He suggested that Admiral Zheng's fleets (of a vast size) that sailed on seven oceanic voyages between 1405 and 1433 had charted the world, and also added some wild ideas involving taking Patagonian mylodons to New Zealand, among others.


Lee's article seems to give some creedence to the surveying part of Menzies' book, at least regarding the New World and its appearance in map-making.

Fusang. The Chinese discovery of America c.450-490 AD


Fusang is an account written by a Chinese Buddhist monk named Hoei-schin which tells about a Chinese voyage which took place in the late fifth century AD, to a country called Fusang, located far to the east, 20,000 li (Chinese miles) from China, which some believe was America, and specifically, Mexico. The Fusang account also mentions a previous visit that took place earlier, in 458 AD, involving some Buddhist monks who took their religion with them to Fusang.


You can find the account digitalized online (Fusang : or, The discovery of America by Chinese Buddhist priests in the fifth century. Leland, Charles Godfrey and Neumann, Karl Friedrich, 1875.


The name Fusang is that of a Chinese plant, said to resemble one they found in the country they visited, which the notes and comments by Friedrich, translated from German to English by Leland, identify with the maguey.


The book is well balanced because it includes points of view that support the notion that Fusang was America, and others that say it is fiction. See this criticism as an example:


"'Hui-shen appears to have been a consummate humbug.' (Cf. 'The People of Central Asia,' by F. Hyacinth.) "I cannot, indeed, understand what ground we have for believing that Fusang is America..."

There are older references on Fusang, as can be seen online here (1763), mentioning de Guignes, who is also mentioned here in 1761 (with a map showing Fusang), and earlier, in 1753.


There is also some disputed and controversial maps attributed to Marco Polo's travels to Asia that mention Fusang (See source) where it shows East Asia and Western North America, with "Focan = Fú Sāng (扶桑) [a mythical land to distant east of China and/or a mythical mulberry tree () growing there]"

A map published in 1776 by Zatta, A., Nuove scoperte de’Russi al Nord del Mare del Sud si nell’Asia, che nell America. Venice. Shows the Northern Pacific, on the coast at Cape Fortuna, you can see "Fou-Sang", this is NW USA, roughly 50° Lat. North and it reads "Colonia de Chinesi" (Chinese Colony). Next to it is the mythical strait of Anian, which was believed to be a link to the Northwest Passage (to the Atlantic Ocean), and also marked the boundary between Asia and America, like Bering Strait does nowadays. The location is roughly where Cape Flattery and Juan de Fuca Strait are located. It can also bee seen in another map from 1768 (online here) which reads "Four Sang according to yc. Chinese geogr." with Puerto Bravo and Cabo Fortunes along its coast, and the Juan de Fuca Strait on its southern side. It is probably Vancouver Island (map).


Juan de Fuca's voyage was published in Hakluytus Posthumus, vol. XIV, p. 415, in 1825, as told by Michael Lok, who in 1596 met de Fuca in Venice.

Now, let's look at the text by Charles G. Leland, Karl F. Neumann, published in 1875.


The 1875 Text on Fusang


This is the literal translation of the original text:


"During the reign of the dynasty Tsi, in the first year of the year-naming, ' Everlasting Origin ' (a.d. 499), came a Buddhist priest from this kingdom, who bore the cloister-name of Hoei-schin, i.e., Universal Compassion, to the -present district of Hukuang, and those surrounding it, who narrated that Fusang is about twenty thousand Chinese miles in an easterly direction from Tahan, and east of the Middle Kingdom. Many Fusang trees grow there, whose leaves resemble the Dryanda cordifolia, the sprouts, on the contrary, resemble those of the bamboo-tree, and are eaten by the inhabitants of the land. The fruit is like a pear in form, but is red. From the bark they prepare a sort of linen which they use for clothing, and also a sort of ornamented stuff.
They have written characters in this land, and prepare paper from the bark of the Fusang. The people have no weapons, and make no wars ; but in the arrangements for the kingdom they have a northern and a southern prison. Trifling offenders were lodged in the southern prison, but those confined for greater offences in the northern ; so that those who were about to receive grace could be placed in the southern prison, and those who were not, in the northern. Those men and women who were imprisoned for life were allowed to marry. The boys resulting from these marriages were, at the age of eight years, sold as slaves ; the girls not until their ninth year. If a man of any note was found guilty of crimes, an assembly was held ; it must be in an excavated place." {Gruhe^ Grer. "a pit;" possibly within an embankment or circle of earth. — C. Gr. L.) " There they strewed ashes over him, and bade him farewell. If the offender was one of a lower class, he alone was punished ; but when of rank, the degradation was extended to his children and grandchildren. With those of the highest rank it attained to the seventh generation.
The name of the king is pronounced Ichi. The nobles of the first-class are termed Tuilu ; .of the second. Little Tuilu ; and of the third, Na-to-scha. "When the prince goes forth, he is accompanied by horns and trumpets. The colour of his clothes changes with the different years. In the two first of the ten-year cyclus they are blue ; in the two next, red ; in the two following, yellow ; in the two next, red ; and in the last two, black.
"


Oxen and Horses in Fusang (America?)


The text continues and mentions the locals have oxen, horses, and use the milk of deers. The notes mention that Humboldt had said there were two types of bovids in Mexico, and that some critics of the text had pointed out that there were no horses in America. The commentary argues the opposite: " "


" The horns of the oxen are so large that they hold ten bushels. They use them to contain all manner of things. Horses, oxen, and stags are harnessed to their waggons. Stags are used here as cattle are used in the Middle Kingdom, and from the milk of the hind they make butter. The red pears of the Fusang-tree keep good throughout the year. Moreover, they have apples and reeds. From the latter they prepare mats. No iron is found in this land ; but copper, gold, and silver are not prized, and do not serve as a medium of exchange in the market. "


The final part of the text is about marriage, and then it mentions a previous voyage of missionary Buddhist monks in 458 AD.


"Marriage is determined upon in the following manner : — The suitor builds himself a hut before the door of the house where the one longed for dwells, and waters and cleans the ground every morning and evening. When a year has passed by, if the maiden is not inclined to marry him, he departs ; should she be willing, it is completed; When the parents die, they fast seven days. For the death of the paternal or maternal grandfather they lament five days ; at the death of elder or younger sisters or brothers, uncles or aunts, three days. They then sit from morning to evening before an image of the ghost, absorbed in prayer, but wear no mourningclothes. When the king dies, the son who succeeds him does not busy himself for three years with State affairs.
In earlier times these people lived not according to the laws of Buddha. But it happened that in the second year-naming Great Light,' of Song (a.d. 458), five beggar-monks from the kingdom of Kipin went to this land, extended over it the religion of Buddha, and with it his holy writings and images. They instructed the people in the principles of monastic life, and so changed their manners.
"


The final part of the text mentions a tribe of Amazons! which is not translated in this work: "This land," he writes, "lies ahout a thousand Chinese miles in an easterly direction from Fusang, and is inhabited hy white people with very hairy bodies." The entire story is, however, intermixed with so. much fabulous matter, that it is not worth translating."


So if this has "fabulous" matter, why don't we consider other parts of the text as made up? It could all be false.


The domestic animals


On page 40, the book analyzes the deer, bovids, and horses:


"DOMESTIC ANIMALS.
The Aztecs had no beasts of draught or of burden. Horses were not found in the New World. The report of the Chinese missionary has, therefore, no connection with the later Mexican reigns. Two varieties of wild oxen with large horns ranged in herds on the plains of the Rio del Norte.3 These might have been tamed by the earlier inhabitants, and used as domestic animals. Stag's horns have been found in the ruins of Mexican buildings ; and Montezuma showed the Spaniards, as curiosities, immensely large horns of this description.

[My comment (A. Whittall). This quote is correct, Humboldt wrote: "The Mexicans had not yet attempted to domesticate the two species of wild oxen (Bos americanus and B. moschatus) that roam in herds on the plains along the River del Norte. These are the American bison and the muskox.]


It is possible that the stags formerly ranged from New California, and other regions of North America, where they are still found in great numbers, to the interior of Mexico. To a native of China it must have seemed remarkable that the Mexicans should have prepared butter from hind's milk, since such a thing has seldom been done in China, either in ancient or modern times....
It is indeed possible that the Chinese have described an animal similar to the horse with the character Ma, or horse, for changes of this nature are of frequent occurrence.1 In such a manner many names of animals in the Old World have been applied to others of an entirely different nature in the New. The eastern limits of the' Asiatic Continent are also the limits of the native land of the horse, and it appears that it was first taken in the third century of our era from Korea into Japan. But let the error in regard to the American horses have come from what source it will, the unprejudiced, circumspect inquirer will not be etermined on account of it to declare the entire story of Fusang-Mexico an idle tale. It appears to me that this description of the western coast of America is at least as authentic as the discovery of the eastern coast, as narrated in Icelandic sagas.

The oxen are taken up again on p. 153 with an interesting explanation that equates them with bison:


"We may, perhaps, even dispense with supposing that the oxen seen by Hoei-shin were bison, if we admit that domestic cattle may have existed in America, and been exterminated. Thus, in the "Relation de Choses de Yucatan de Diego de Landa," the author tells us that an Indian chief named Cocom showed him one day an ancient book containing the picture of a common European cow, and told him it had been prophesied that when such beasts should come into the country, the worship of the gods would cease — " Cessario el culto de los Dioses, y que se avia cumplido, porque los espanoles truxeron vacas grandes." It is true that this may have been a mere trick of the Indian to flatter the Spaniard.
D'Eichthal has vindicated Deguignes as regards the statement that hinds (biches) were domesticated in Fusang, and that cheese was made from their milk, by citing from the "Popol-Vuh" (Introduction, p. xl.)" Milk was known to the Mexicans, who were accustomed to milk bison-cows and tame hinds, and make cheese." The statement appears to have been taken from Castaneda.

My comment: Hind is a mature female deer. The word "biches" used by Deguinges is French for "hind".


Regarding the quote from Popol-Vuh, I disagree; there is no refrence in the Popol-Vuh about cheese-making by the ancient Mayas using deer milk. In fact, the quote mentioned above and cited as "Popol-Vuh, Introduction p. xl" is a circular reference, because going to D'Eichthal's work (see it here, p. 151) we see that the quote originated in the work of M. l’Abbé Brasseur de Bourbourg, in his introduction to the Popol-Vuh, but, where he quotes the Fusang book; the text on p. xl says [in Fusang] "They raise deer like oxen, and make a drink from milk."


The mention of father Diego de Landa (1524-1579) and his Relación de las Cosas de Yucatan (p.14) is correct, but excluded some relevant text. The original says: "Don Juan Cocom... le contó muchas antigúedades y le mostró un libro que fue de su abuelo, hijo de Cocom que mataron en Mayapán, y en él estaba pintado un venado; y que aquel su abuelo le había dicho que cuando en aquella tierra entrasen venados grandes, que así llamaban a las vacas, cesaría el culto de los Dioses; y que se había cumplido porque los españoles trajeron vacas grandes" which in English is: "Juan Cocom... told him many ancient stories and showed him a book that had belonged to his grandfather, the son of Cocom who was killed in Mayapán, and in it was painted a deer; and that his grandfather had told him that when large deer, which is what they called cows, entered that land, the worship of the gods would cease; and that it had come to pass because the Spaniards brought large cows."


So, were they cows or deer (venados)? or did the natives use the word "deer" and applied it to some local bovid, probably American bison?


I have posted several times in the past about American cows and horses (See two examples Native Pre-Hispanic Cattle in Patagonia?, and the survival of native horses in the Americas, so I am not surprised at them being mentioned in Mesoamerica.


It is very likely that Chinese ships crossed the North Pacific Ocean and took advantage of its natural resources (forestry, salmons, seals, Steller sea cows) and visited Alaska, and the west coast of Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.

Neanderthals in China 55 ky ago


Research published in April of this year (Q. Ruan, H. Li, P. Xiao, et. al., Quina lithic technology indicates diverse Late Pleistocene human dynamics in East Asia, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 122 (14) e2418029122, https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2418029122 (2025).) found stone tools from the Middle Pleistocene in Southwestern China. This is important because there had been the notion that there had not been any "Middle Paleolithic" lithic tools in the region.


The technology used to make these tools is very similar to the Neanderthal's Mousterian knapping technique found in Western Eurasia.


The map below (Source) shows the sites across Eurasia including Longtan, and the lithic technologies found at each of them. The Neanderthal territory is marked with a brown tone overlay from Europe, across the Middle East, Caucasus into Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan into Altai. The arrows mark the flow of "know-how" into China, from the Altai region, and also from SE India, where Levallois tools have also been found.

Mousterian tools are quite variable, and there are different variants depending on the strategies used to knap the stone core; these are the Levallois, the Laminar, the Discoid, and the Quina, all found in western Eurasia. This research reports it at the Longtan site, located in Yunnan Province, Southwest China.


The paper says that "Our study further deepens the understanding of biocultural dynamics of Homo sapiens, Denisovans, and possibly other hominins in the Late Pleistocene of East Asia." There was a very complex demographic situation in that region at that time.


Indigenous or Imported?


These were not modern humans that arrived early in Asia; the authors clearly state that " Middle Paleolithic sites in southern China exhibiting distinct African Middle Stone Age technological elements remain undocumented. Consequently, from a material cultural perspective, we suggest that it is currently premature to support the early dispersal model along the southern route with the arrival in China before ca. 45 ka."


The authors papers suggest an alternative explanation: local East Asian hominins evolved here and developed this type of tools by progressing from similar older stone artifacts made by Densiovans around 200 ky ago. Another option is that they were aquired by know-how dispersion: "implying dynamics of knowledge transmission and/or population dispersal from western Eurasia. Dispersion may be supported by evidence of the coexistence of Denisovans and Neanderthals in southern Siberia since ca. 200 ka (the earliest appearance of Neanderthals just overlies the earliest layer occupied by Denisovans), which has not only indicated the early eastward migration event of Neanderthals but also the genetic exchanges between the two distinct human groups."


The paper points out that "If dispersal or migration is relevant to the Longtan Quina, we would expect evidence of Quina systems in wide areas of Central and South Asia; however, none have been reported to date. Further evidence is required to test the above proposed hypotheses."


So, even though the study does not confirm the presence of Neanderthals in China 55,000 years ago, their relatives, the Denisovans were firmly established in the region. And it is possible that they developed the techniques to knap stones more efficiently, resembling the Neanderthal technology.


The history of how humans peopled Asia is complex and exciting times lie ahead as we learn more about it.

D4h3a mtDNA revisited


Yu-Chun, lI et al. published a paper in 2023, that looked into the link between Native Americans (NAs) mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) lineage D4h3a and the variant D4h3b which until now has been found only in East China and Thailand.


The authors noted that "D4h3 and its ancestor type D4h are relatively rare in contemporary populations (∼0.5%)" and estimated the age of the NA variant at 19,400 years (15.11 - 24.05 ky).


The interesting part is that they suggest that this haplogroup took a coastal route by sea from China to America, going through Japan's Islands. It didn't cross from Siberia and Beringia into America, walking.


"The coastal distributions of the NA (D4h3a) and Japanese lineages (D4h1a and D4h2), in combination with the Paleolithic archaeological similarities among Northern China, the Americas, and Japan, lend support to the coastal dispersal scenario of early NAs."


The authors highlight that this is a genetic source that is outside of Siberia, which provided mtDNA (a matrilineal lineage) to Native Americans. They stress that it is an "additional ancestral source for the ancestors of NAs beyond Siberia", and that "although only contributed to a small proportion of the mtDNA gene pool of NAs (D4h3a) [it] would be important in complementing the whole picture of origination histories of early NAs."

Given the location of the original D4h variant, on the coast of Northern China, the authors suggest that it could have dispersed along the Pacific coastal rim: "we speculate that D4h would have documented LGM and post-LGM dispersals along the eastern Pacific coast. This echoes well with the dispersal D4h3a along the Pacific coastal path when the ice-free corridor was closed. Similarly, Y chromosome C-L1373, which probably radiated in parallel with mtDNA D4h, has also been reported in South Koreans (http://koreangenome.org/) and the Nivkh, thus lending support to a coastal population expansion scenario initiated from northern coastal China. This, together with the Paleolithic cultural affinities along the Pacific, e.g., stemmed points, and the palaeoecological feasibility of maritime dispersals (e.g., kelp highway hypothesis) lends further support to the coastal route hypothesis of early NAs."


It is also found along the coastal people in South America. Stuart J. Fiedel (source) in 2017 wrote that "D4h3a is a relatively rare clade of haplogroup D... it was reported mainly from coastal peoples, including the Fuegians of southernmost Chile, the Chumash of southern California, and the Cayapa of Ecuador The 10,300-year–old skeletal remains from On Your Knees Cave in coastal Alaska belonged to a derived clade of D4h3a."


However, Fiedel says that "the recent distribution of this clade is “deceptive” and has nothing to do with a hypothetical coastal migration".


He bases this argument on the fact that the Anzick baby had D4h3a mt DNA, and is roughly 12,900 years old, but it was found in south-central Montana, far from the Pacific coast, and that other remains are also from the interior of the continent like the Hopewell remains found in the Klunk Mounds in Illinois, and that this variant has been found in extant people of Native American origin in Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, and Mexico.


I had posted about D4h3a back in 2014 and pointed out the same idea:


"We see that the D4h3a tends to have a coastal distribution along the Pacific Ocean from Canada to Tierra del Fuego: Canada, California, Ecuador, Southern Chile and Argentina.
The Yaghan, Alakaluf, Chono, Cayapa, Chumash and the man from On Your Knees Cave, all had this haplogroup.
They all built sea-going craft: rafts, dugout canoes, bark canoes and "sewn plank" canoes.
Other groups also built canoes or rafts; the Changos in Northern Chile, the Pericú, and the Aleuts, though we cannot tell if they also carried this rare haplogroup.
But, as we will see in our next post, it is also found quite far from the Western Coast: as it was detected in ancient remains from the Klunk Mound (Illinois) and in Shandong, China.
Furthermore, the Ainu people of Japan also built "lashed-canoes" -like the Chono and the Chumash (as well as dugouts), and they may have a link with the Amerindians.
"


It pointed out the Chinese connection, the coastal route, and the original Japanese people, the Ainus. The second post in that 2014 series reported the Klunk Mound remains with this haplogroup variant and proposed that "This haplogroup was widespread across America (Pacific coast and well across the Rockies) and became extinct among all native groups being replaced by the other more common haplogroups now found in those groups (A, B, C, D). These surely migrated later into America." It also suggested a back-migration from America to Asia.

Neves and Pucciarelli's paper on affinities between Australians and Paleoindians


As promised, in this post I share a link to a paper by Neves and Pucciarelli (Neves, W.A. and Pucciarelli, H.M. (1991). Morphogical affinities of the first Americans: an exploratory analysis based on early South American human remains. J. Hum. Evol. 21: 261-273).


It tells how they compared the remains of three ancient South American remains (from Tequendama in Colombia, and Lagoa Santa in Brazil) with ancient and contemporary Eurasian and Australian remains. They used thirteen different cranial parameters in their analysis.


This was in the days before DNA was used to compare human groups. Neat and interesting. I thank Marcelo Bruyere for having shared the paper.

The authors point out that "The comparison showed that early South Americans clustered very tightly with South Pacific populations, when size and shape were used as taxonomical criteria. When size was removed, the three series occupied an intermediate position".


And conclude that:


"the morphological affinities derived from our study can be perfectly matched to an Asian origin if we assume that Australians and Americans shared a common ancestor until just before they arrived at the New World. Accordingly, both branches, the one that migrated northwards and the one that migrated southwards, did not have a long, independent evolutionary history in northern and southern Asia prior to their settlement in the Americas and Australia. At least not enough to have changed their cranial morphology. If we accept the association detected in this study between Early South Americans, Early Australians and the Zhoukoudian Upper Cave people, Northern China can be suggested as the starting point of both migration branches."


So the remains from the upper Zhoukoudian Cave, which are between 20 and 30,000 years old would belong to a group which is the root of the first wave of Paleoindians and Australians.


It is possible, in my opinion, that this date could even be earlier, considering the date that humans reached Australia (some 50-70 ky ago).

The Harbin Dragon man (146,000 years-old) is a Denisovan


The skull formerly known as the Harbin "Dragon Man", found in China over 90 years ago, has been asigned to a Denisovan. It is the first known skull of these mysterious people.


A paper published on June 18, 2025 in Science reported the following:


Denisovans are a hominin group primarily known through genomes or proteins, but the precise morphological features of Denisovans remain elusive due to the fragmentary nature of discovered fossils. Here we report ninety-five endogenous proteins retrieved from a nearly complete cranium from Harbin, China, dating to at least 146,000 years ago and previous assigned to a new species, Homo longi. This individual has three Denisovan derived amino acid variants and clusters with Denisova 3, suggesting the Harbin individual belongs to a Denisovan population. This study fills the gap between morphological and molecular evidence, enhancing our understanding of Denisovans’ spatiotemporal dispersal and evolutionary history.>

The skull had been discovered in 1933, and not long ago, in 2021, had been proposed as a new species, called Homo longi. Now it is the first remains of a Denisovan beyond some teeth, and a finger bone found in the Denisova Cave in Altai.


Another paper published in April 2025 confirmed a Denisovan origin for a jawbone dredged up from the bottom of the sea in Taiwan (see my 2015 post on this Primitive yet recent jawbone from Taiwan; Penghu 1).


So now we have plenty of Denisovan remains and now need to find out what link exists between them and our very old ancestor, Homo erectus. Erectus was well established in Asia for over 1.5 million years and surely interacted with Denisovans.

Was a Denisovan skull found in Harbin?


Another species? or maybe a Denisovan? A paper (The Innovation, DOI: 10.1016/j.xinn.2021.100130 and DOI: 10.1016/j.xinn.2021.100132, Massive cranium from Harbin in northeastern China establishes a new Middle Pleistocene human lineage) published today, describes a crania discovered in 1933 in Harbin, northern China, but only re-discovered a few years ago, and studied now.

The paper cautiously suggests in a covert manner that this Harbin skull may be a Denisovan one:

"The sister relationship between Harbin and Xiahe, as identified by Bayesian inference (but not parsimony analysis, see the supplemental information), is particularly interesting. The Xiahe mandible shows some proteomic features of the Denisovans, who were informally called “Homo sapiens altaiensis” or “Homo altaiensis,” and sediments from Baishiya Cave have yielded Denisovan mtDNA. The Harbin M2 also matches the known permanent Denisovan molars in size and root morphology, and, ever since the discovery of Denisovans, Asian Middle Pleistocene hominins, such as Dali, Jinniushan, and Xujiayao, have been suspected to represent an East Asian population of the Denisovans"

The remains have been dated to "a minimum age ... of ∼146 ka"

Regarding divergence from the Homo sapiens line, it has some interesting findings: (bold font is mine)

"The results of the Bayesian tip-dating analyses suggest that the Harbin and Xiahe fossils shared a common ancestor ∼188 ka (397–155 ka), and the clade, including the Harbin cranium and H. sapiens shared a common ancestor at ∼949 ka (1,041.41–875.25 ka). The Neanderthal-H. sapiens divergence time in our analysis was ∼1,007 ka (1,114–919 ka). This estimation falls in the range based on mtDNAs for the split between the basal Neanderthal (Sima de los Huesos) and the H. sapiens lineage, but is much older than the estimation based on nuclear DNAs for the splits between the Neanderthal and H. sapiens lineages. However, it is possible that this younger estimated divergence date is an artifact of statistical averaging between “super-archaic” and “recent gene flow” events. The common ancestor of the H. sapiens OTUs (NOTE: OTU is an "Operational Taxonomic Unit", and the term means that the beings under study share a given set of observed characters). included in our analysis is as old as ∼770 ka (922–622 ka), suggesting that the H. sapiens clade has a much deeper origin time than previously estimated. The Eurasian H. sapiens OTUs share a common ancestor ∼416 ka (534–305 ka) old. Outside of Africa, however, the earliest known H. sapiens fossil is only ∼210 ka.
There is a large time gap between the hypothetical common ancestor of Eurasian H. sapiens and the actual fossil record, from the Bayesian tip-dating analysis. One plausible hypothesis is that the ancestral population of Eurasian H. sapiens may have diversified in Africa for many millennia before they dispersed into Eurasia. Genetic studies on ancient DNA suggest that the initial genetic exchanges between Neanderthals and H. sapiens occurred between 468 and 219 ka, or between ∼370 and 100 ka, and the introgression may have originated through gene flow from an African source. Interestingly, not only does the estimated time of the introgression event between Neanderthals and H. sapiens roughly overlap our prediction for the age of the common ancestor of Eurasian H. sapiens, but the African origin of the introgression is also consistent with our African ancestral population hypothesis.

Africa is the major source of Homo dispersals. In total, ∼40% of all the dispersals are from Africa, while Africa also receives ∼22% dispersals from Asia and Europe. Instead of a unidirectional “out of Africa” model, a multi-directional “shuttle dispersal model” is more likely to explain the complex phylogenetic connections among African and Eurasian Homo species/populations.

Let's hope that DNA can be extracted from the skull, it could confirm that this man was in fact a Denisovan.

Hookworms and the peopling of America - revisited


A paper on hookworms mtDNA published earlier this year (Monteiro K J L, Mitochondrial DNA reveals species composition and phylogenetic relationships of hookworms in northeastern Brazil, Infect Genet Evol. 2019 Mar;68:105-112. doi: 10.1016/j.meegid.2018.11.018. Epub 2018 Nov 30) provides more information on the subject of hookworms and the peopling of America (which has been the subject of two previous posts in our blog).


The paper found "... two strongly-supported clades, including Group A, corresponding to Necator americanus, and Groups B and C, corresponding to Necator sp. Group A was divided into three main clusters: A1 grouped with Asian sequences, A2 grouped with African sequences, and A3 had only Asian sequences. Group B was closely related to Necator sp., showing a sequence similarity of 98%–99% with African samples circulating zoonotically among humans and non-human primates".

The interesting part is the relationship between the Groups:


  • A1 Group (shown in pink above) is, according to the authors "Grouped with Asian sequences", the samples from Asia are marked with green rhombus.
  • A2 Group (shown in pale blue) "Grouped with African sequences", displays a recent Togo sample (brown square) among an older set of sequences.
  • A3 Group (shown in pale green) has indeed "only Asian sequences".

The authors calculated that the split between the two clades (one encompassing groups A1, A2 and A3, the other with groups B and C) took place in the middle Pleistocene (that means that it happened between 781,000 and 126,000 years ago).


They also found that "The most recent common ancestor among N. americanus groups was dated to the late Pleistocene." which places it between 126,000 and 12,000 years ago.


Unfortunately I cannot read the full paper, but it seems that the sample from Togo (Africa) is far younger than the other American ones. The point that has to be explained is how did these subtropical and tropical parasites reach America from Asia and avoided the freezing cold Beringian route?

An early Out of Africa 2.48 Million years ago


We have posted on the hominin remains found at Dmanisi in Georgia, and evidence of hominin presence in China 2.1 Million yeras ago (Ma). A recent paper provides some more information on this very early migration of hominins out of Africa 2.48 Ma, long before the first Homo sapiens appeared.


A few months ago we mentioned a new paper reported in the media that pushes the Out of Africa migration by pre-sapiens hominins to 2.4 Ma. We have just found it published: it is the paper by Giancarlo Scardia, Fabio Parenti, Daniel P. Miggins, AxelG erdes, Astolfo G.M. Araujo and Walter A.Neves, (Chronologic constraints on hominin dispersal outside Africa since 2.48?Ma from the Zarqa Valley, Jordan, Quaternary Science Reviews, Vol 219, 1 September 2019, pp 1-19, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.quascirev.2019.06.007). It tells us that they found evidence of hominin presence in an area that those who would later reach Dmanisi and China had to cross on their trek out of Africa: The Middle East.


They mention the presence of hominins in China some 2.1 Ma, and in North Africa (2.4 Ma), - and we add the Homo georgicus found in Georgia (1.75 Ma) to their list.


They also report that even though the Levant does not have any sites as old as those mentioned above, they found stone tools in the Dawqara Formation sediments in Zarqa Valley, in Jordan that were buried some 300,000 years earlier thant the Chinese tools.


As Jordan lies in the corridor that any out-of-Africa Homo habilis would use to exit Africa, they conclude that these artifacts were made by these hominins.


They found Oldowan tools together with fossils of mammals in the Dawqara Formation. They were not found in a site (a camp site for instance), the tools were transported to where they were found by water and buried by riverine sediments. They dated these sediments to 2.48 Ma.


These Oldowan tools are primitive and predate the later Acheulean tools developed by Homo erectus. So clearly these hominins were Homo habilis.


This puts an early date for the first hominin migration out of Africa and into Eurasia.


The Abstract is the following:


" Recent discoveries constrain the presence of hominins in North Africa since ca. 2.4?Ma and in China since ca. 2.1?Ma, providing a new temporal framework for the earliest migration out of Africa. No Paleolithic sites of such age exist in the Levant, the natural corridor between Africa and Asia. The Dawqara Formation in the Zarqa Valley, Jordan, has been known since the early 1980s because of the presence of artifacts at different stratigraphic levels within its fluvial sediments, consisting of choppers, cores, and flakes.
Although most of the artifacts display signs of transport, they bear unambiguous evidence of manufacture, and document hominin presence in the Zarqa Valley during the deposition of Dawqara Formation. Based on integrated chronology provided by paleomagnetic, 40Ar⁄39Ar, and U-Pb dating methods, our study shows that the Dawqara Formation was deposited between 2.52+⁄-?0.01?Ma and the Matuyama–Olduvai geomagnetic reversal (1.95?Ma). By linear interpolation, the artifact-bearing stratigraphic levels within the Dawqara Formation have ages of ca. 2.48?Ma, 2.24?Ma, 2.16?Ma, 2.06?Ma, and 1.95?Ma, respectively, possibly documenting continuous hominin presence in the Zarqa Valley.
These new ages for the Dawqara assemblage constrain the earliest hominin dispersal out of Africa to the beginning of the Pleistocene, and pre-date by ca. 300 kyr the hominin occupation of Chinese Loess Plateau.
"


The North African tools are the 1.9-million- and 2.4-million-year-old artifacts and stone tool-cutmarked bones from Ain Boucherit, Algeria., Sahnouni M, et al., Science. 2018 Dec 14;362(6420):1297-1301. doi: 10.1126/science.aau0008. Epub 2018 Nov 29.


Sahnouni suggests that these old Algerian tools (slightly younger thant the Oldowan tools from East Africa - 2.6 Ma) "shows that ancestral hominins inhabited the Mediterranean fringe in northern Africa much earlier than previously thought. The evidence strongly argues for early dispersal of stone tool manufacture and use from East Africa or a possible multiple-origin scenario of stone technology in both East and North Africa.".


However there are even older tools found in Asia, in India to be more specific, that are 2.6 Ma. Were these the first hominins to leave Africa?


Last but not least, these Zarqa Valley "artifacts" have been dug up in a fluvial environment not unlike the setting where the Calico California stone tools were found, yet these American artifacts have been disregarded by orthodox science and labeled as geofacts (not man made, but shaped by natural forces).

Archaic Hominin in China author of the earliest use of ochre on bone engravings


Two engraved bones were unearthed at the Lingjing site in Central Eastern China. The remarkable thing about these bones is that they were dated to 105,000 - 125,000 years and the incissions were done deliberately, not as the result of removing meat from a carcass, but with a symbolic intent. The bones were also coated with ochre.


The paper (Engraved bones from the archaic hominin site of Lingjing, Henan Province, Zhanyang Li, Luc Doyon, Hao Li, Qiang Wang ... DOI: https://doi.org/10.15184/aqy.2019.81Published online by Cambridge University Press: 08 July 2019) finds these bones as the earliest evidence of human populations using ochre for symbolic or abstract purposes.


The age of these bones means that they were done by "archaic" hominins that lived prior to and during the evolution of Homo sapiens in Africa (according to the prevalent "out of Africa" theory).


Ochre is a clay with an iron content that once it has oxidized (rusted) gives the clay a tone which can range from yellow to red to brown. It has been used around the world for religious purposes and sacred art (even by Neanderthals, 73 kya - see paper).


Its bright red color may have symbolized blood and therefore life, afterlife, fertility. It is also very visible in the dimly lit caves and was used as raw material for many of the cave rock paintings from the origin of humankind onwards, all across the globe.

Homo habilis left Africa 2.4 Million Years ago


Brazilian media has reported that today, Saturday July 6, 2019, Quaternary Science Reviews magazine will publish a paper authored by a Brazilian-Italian team who conducted a series of excavations on the Zarqa River in northern Jordan between 2013 and 2015. Their key discovery are stone tools dated 2.4 Million years old.


At the time that I published this post, I hadn't been able to find the article in Quaternary Science Reviews, but I will share what these news reports say (I am translating them more or less freely from Portuguese to English):


The fact that these stone tools are 2.4 Million years old is significant because it places them 500,000 years further back in time than the commonly accepted earliest date of hominid migration out of Africa.


The team unearthed some 450 pieces of stone of which at least 100 are really old. Images shown below depict these tools:

The age of these tools means that they predate Homo erectus and therefore, they are the work of the only hominid that existed at that time: Homo habilis.


Furthermore, it places H. habilis in the Middle East, that is, out of Africa and in Asia.


One of the paper's authors, Walter Neves, a Brazilian biologist, archaeologist and anthropolgist stated that "With our discoveries, we demonstrated that man left Africa some 500 thousand years earlier, and that the transition from Homo habilis to Homo erectus took place in the Caucasus and not in Africa".


Their discovery would, as Neves says "solve one of the biggest problems of paleonanthropology fo the last 20 years" by explaining the skulls found in Dmanisi, Georgia, in the Caucasus as belonging to H. habilis.


These five skulls, pictured below, had been originally assigned to a local branch of Homo ergaster, now they are considered as being Homo erectus and their age of 1.8 My makes this feasible, as it coincides more or less with the date of the supposed migration of Homo erectus out of Africa. However the size of the Dmanisi skulls was problematic: they were very different to each other and far smaller than Homo erectus skulls... they were more like Homo habilis skulls.

The Dmanisi remains data (from David Lordkipanidze et al., (2013). A Complete Skull from Dmanisi, Georgia, and the Evolutionary Biology of Early Homo. Science 18 October 2013. Vol. 342 no. 6156 pp. 326-331; doi: 10.1126/science.1238484):


  • Similar to the "African" H. erectus (known as H. ergaster) but have smaller crania and therefore closer to H. habilis.
  • Skull sizes from 546 to 730 cm3, compatible with theH. habilis' 509 to 687 cm3.
  • Small bodied: 146 to 166 cm, 47 to 50 kg, similar to H. habilis but in the lower range of H. erectus.

Neves believes that they were Homo habilis, and that they are the forebearers of Homo erectus, who evolved in Asia out of H. Habilis stock.


He also suggests that this can explain the tiny Flores Island hominids and the old stone tools recently discovered in China, which are 2.1 Million years old, in line with what we wrote in our post on those tools (Hominins in China 2.1 Million years ago... pushing back the dates in Asia):


"And this is in China, surely the hominins who made those tools reached western Eurasia far earlier than the 2.12 My age assigned to those tools. Which may imply that they were not Homo erectus, maybe Homo habilis or even an australopithecine species! (maybe the ancestors of the primitive Flores island "Hobbit")."


The Flores - Homo habilis link was proposed by Debbie Arguea et al., (see my post First Asians were not Homo erectus revisited) in June 2017, and Neves' dates seems to support it.

High altitude dwelling Denisovans: Tibet 160K years ago


A paper published today in Nature (Chen, Fahu et al., A late Middle Pleistocene Denisovan mandible from the Tibetan Plateau, doi 10.1038/s41586-019-1139-x ), identifies a lower jaw from a cave in Xiahe, China as belonging to a Densiovan, and dates it as 160,000 years old.


The abstract says:


"Denisovans are members of a hominin group who are currently only known directly from fragmentary fossils, the genomes of which have been studied from a single site, Denisova Cave in Siberia. They are also known indirectly from their genetic legacy through gene flow into several low-altitude East Asian populations and high-altitude modern Tibetans6. The lack of morphologically informative Denisovan fossils hinders our ability to connect geographically and temporally dispersed fossil hominins from Asia and to understand in a coherent manner their relation to recent Asian populations. This includes understanding the genetic adaptation of humans to the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau, which was inherited from the Denisovans. Here we report a Denisovan mandible, identified by ancient protein analysis, found on the Tibetan Plateau in Baishiya Karst Cave, Xiahe, Gansu, China. We determine the mandible to be at least 160 thousand years old through U-series dating of an adhering carbonate matrix. The Xiahe specimen provides direct evidence of the Denisovans outside the Altai Mountains and its analysis unique insights into Denisovan mandibular and dental morphology. Our results indicate that archaic hominins occupied the Tibetan Plateau in the Middle Pleistocene epoch and successfully adapted to high-altitude hypoxic environments long before the regional arrival of modern Homo sapiens.

This is significant for several reasons:

  1. It is a second site with Denisovan fossils other than the original cave in the Altai mountains.
  2. It puts the Denisovans in a high altitue environment: the Baishiya Karst Cave is set at 3,280 m (10,500 ft) in the Tibetan Plateau.
  3. Present human populations in that area have inherited a Denisovan gene (found in the Altai cave remains), that gives them the ability to survive the lack of oxygen encountered at high altitudes. Now there is a Denisovan jaw bone in the right location: the Tibetan Plateau, where the Tibetans with this gene live (the Nepalese Sherpas also have it).

The age is also interesting: 160,000 years old. This is in the same range as the age of the Altai cave: Denisovans were living in the Altai cave at least 200,000 years ago and continued living there until about 55,000 years ago. Neanderthals overlapped them, and lived in the cave between around 190,000-100,000 years ago.


The mandible was discovered in 1980, and only now has it been identificed through protein analysis as belonging to a Denisovan.

Some Odd teeth in China


A paper (Late Middle Pleistocene hominin teeth from Tongzi, southern China, by Song Xinga, María Martinon-Torres and Jose MariaBermudez de Castro) reported that some teeth roughly 200,000-years-old found in the Yanhui cave in China, which were originally thought to belong to Homo erectus, may belong to some other hominin.


They have a mix of modern and archaic traits, which lack some characteristic features of H. erectus, but don't belong to Neanderthals either!


Since modern H. sapiens was still in Africa at that time, these teeth (because they are large) may have belonged to the mysterious Denisovan group.


Expect some surprising findings to come out of China in the coming years. Asia was teeming with "humans" long before the purported "out of Africa" migration took place. It may be the cradle of humankind.

Levallois tools: did this technology originate in Asia?


Earlier this year, a paper (Kumar Akhilesh et al., Early Middle Palaeolithic culture in India around 385–172 ka reframes Out of Africa models, Nature volume 554, pages 97-101, 01 February 2018) reported finding Levallois stone tools in a site called Attirampakam, in India. These tools were about 385,000 years old, which put the date of this stone knapping technology further back in time than had been previously expected.


These Indian tools are even older than the Levallois tools found in Africa, and they predate the currently accepted date of Homo sapiens expansion out of Africa.


Modern Brains


The Levallois tools represent a shift in stone knapping know-how. Until then the Acheulian (developed by Homo erectus) technique had been in use for over 1.4 million years.


It was named after the site where they were first discovered in the 1800s: Levallois-Perret, a suburb of Paris, in France.


It is distinctive of a more brainier hominid, who developed a new technique for knapping stones to obtain sharp flint tools.


But who made them? until recently it had been suggested that they were the result of archaic Homo sapiens migrating out of Africa.


But with the Indian tools dated around 385 kya and some found in Armenia (D.S. Adler et al., Early Levallois technology and the Lower to Middle Paleolithic transition in the Southern Caucasus, Science 26 Sep 2014: Vol. 345, Issue 6204, pp. 1609-1613 DOI: 10.1126/science.1256484) aged 325 kya, this explanation seems unfounded: there were no H. sapiens at that time.


Adler writes: "Our data from Nor Geghi, Armenia... are consistent with the hypothesis that this transition occurred independently within geographically dispersed, technologically precocious hominin populations with a shared technological ancestry."


Suggesting a pre-Homo sapiens origin.


The oldest remains of Homo sapiens and Levallois tools are from a site in Morocco and they are much more recent than the Armenian and Indian tools: 315,000 years old. (Read more).


We know that the Neanderthal made them in Europe, could they be the authors of these Eurasian tools?


A paper published four days ago: Yue Hu et al.Late Middle Pleistocene Levallois stone-tool technology in southwest China, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-018-0710-1 DO 10.1038/s41586-018-0710-1 ID Nature 19. Nov. 2018), reports finding Levallois tools in China:


"Here we present evidence of Levallois technology from the lithic assemblage of the Guanyindong Cave site in southwest China, dated to approximately 170,000-80,000 years ago. To our knowledge, this is the earliest evidence of Levallois technology in east Asia. Our findings thus challenge the existing model of the origin and spread of Levallois technologies in east Asia and its links toa Late Pleistocene dispersal of modern humans."


So once again who made them? This date is prior to any known H. sapiens presence in China. Were they Neanderthals? or perhaps Denisovans, who lived in Southern and Central Asia at that time?


Here we have a technological break-through that seems to have originated Out of Africa and not In Africa, our purported craddle of mankind. Did modern humans evolve outside of Africa?
