Submerged Continental Shelves: the corridors of Hominin migrations


When we look back at the first humans as they spread across the globe, we are usually constrained by the coastal areas marked on maps. But people didn't only move through the heart of continents, they also trekked along their margins, by the coast, using the resources provided by the sea.


During the Ice Ages, vast quantities of water was trapped in the thick ice shields that covered the polar parts of the world, from 1.5 to 3 km (1-2 mi.) thick, the ice held so much water that the sea levels dropped, exposing areas now submerged along the continental shelves around the globe.


These areas were dry land for thousands of years. The exposed seabed thrived with plants and animal life. Trees, grasslands, rivers that flowed across them offered an environment suitable for our ancestors to live.


Some of the best known exposed continental shelves are: Beringia (spanning Bering's Strait between northeastern Siberia and alaska), Sahul (encompassing Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea, Sundaland which included insular South East Asia: Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Flores, Bali, and the Malay Peninsula), and Doggerland (now submerged by the North Sea between Britain, Denmark, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands).


But there were many more spots that were used by humans, and also by our ancestors, the Denisovans and Neanderthals, to migrate, hunt, and live.


The forgotten Submerged World of our Ancestors


During the peak of each Ice Age, sea levels dropped up to 120 meters (400 ft.) and this exposed up to "15–20 million km2 of land" (5.8 to 7.7 million square miles) this is equivalent to 50-66% of the surface of Africa, two to three times the surface of Australia, or two to three times the area of the lower 48 states of the U.S. (21 to 28 times the area of Texas).

The map above shows a large area along the north coast of Siberia, Europe and Canda, but this was under the ice sheets, and the map with its Mercator projection tends to inflate the size of polar areas and diminsh those of mid and equatiorial latitudes. As you can see, Australia, Sunda, Japan-Taiwan-Korea, Southern South America, the mouth of the Amazon River, the persian Gulf, the Aegean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic Seabord of USA have the largest emerged areas.


The area of the continents is around 148 million km2, so the ice ages exposed an additional 10 to 13.5% of dry land, now submerged beneath the waves. A territory that is unexplored.


Archaeology under the sea is almost non-existent, and except for the rare artifact brought up by chance during fishing (like the Denisovan jawbone Penghu-1 from Taiwan) or the Homo erectus bones dredged by Berghuis, 2025 in Java) we know little of what exists on the continental shelves.


A paper by Norman et al., 2024 described the now submerged shelf along the northwestern coast of Australia, modelling its environment and population. The authors mention the importance of subaquatic archaeology, and also noted that the flooding after the end of the last ice age was very fast, sea levels grew by 1 meter (3 ft. 4 in.) per century and accelerated to 4-5 m (13-16 ft) per hundred years for over 400 years around 14.1 kya. This was followed by a second flood, that lasted 3000 years, beginning 12 kya, which was also fast. The flooding pushed the people living on the sea shores into the interior of the continent, a period of stress and adaptation to new enviornments and resources which is reflected in the rock art styles that changed and seem to depict "conflict/battle scenes."


Americas


The submerged coastal areas of North America along the shores of Canada, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California surely contain sites with artifacts and campgrounds of the first people to reach America. Although narrow, this shelf holds evidence about the earliest humans in America. On the Atlantic coast, the continental shelf is far wider. In a recent post I mentioned the 22,000-year-old Cinmar site off the coast of Virginia, in the Atlantic Ocean, 47 mi (75 km) from Chesapeake Bay.


The Pacific coastline, is steeper in Central and South America, as the Andes run very close to it, and the seabed plunges into the ocean depths fairly quickly. But on the Atlantic coastline of Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil, there was a vast flat area that stretched for hundreds of kilometers eastwards from the current sea shore. Below is a map that depicts the current, and the now submerged terrain of South America (the white dots are sites where pollen was collected for an analysis of the plant coverage).

The paper in which the map shown above, was published, by Díaz Pinaya et al., 2024, describes the "Southern Atlantic Continental Shelf Connectivity (SACS)" had trees of many species, like "Araucaria and Drimys, forming plant assemblages with Arecaceae, Ericaceae, Ilex, Myrsine, Myrtaceae, Podocarpus, Symplocos and Weinmannia. It includes Atlantic Rainforest sites extending from the Mantiqueira Mountains, the modern cerrado region of Minas Gerais into the Serra do Mar highlands along the coast of southeastern and southern Brazil. Considering the LGM landscape, this floristic connectivity extended from the Central South American Connection (CSAM) onto the then-exposed Atlantic Shelf spanning from 23 to 56°S in latitude. We hypothesize that this large exposed area was vegetated by cold and humid successional forests as a consequence of the downward migration of montane taxa into the coastal lowlands, a scenario supported by pollen records." During this period, the araucaria of the Paraná region (not the Patagonian variety of monkey-puzzle) is believed to have expanded "into Uruguay and northern Argentina, especially onto the exposed continental shelf. Drimys, on the other hand, appears to display high niche suitability centered in southern/southeastern Brazil, on the Argentinian shelf and in a large area between 36 and 48°S on the Pacific coast of Chile. Drimys winteri... an Andean endemic, could have populated the latter two regions"


This paper estimates the emerged continental shelf along the coasts of South America at 1.94 million km2, which is "equivalent in size to the combined areas of France, Spain, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom and that in southeastern/southern Brazil/Uruguay and Argentina the past coastline was 200–250 km and 500 km distant from its present location, respectively."


The Araucaria and Drimys (in the Patagonian forests, the latter survives as the Winter Bark, or Canelo, Drimy winteri) would have expanded along the southern part of the shelf, colder and wetter. In the other parts, further north it would have been similar to the present day Atlantic Rainforest with different levels of trees, possibly five tree layers with different tree-heights, from 50 meters (150 ft) to tree ferns and shrubs at the lowest level. The authors point out that "the South American Continental Shelf, which could have created an important migration corridor for different southern Andean plant species to migrate northwards and colonize areas of the Brazilian Atlantic coast. Our data suggests that this vast coastal corridor was possibly covered by temperate-like forest with prevalent Andean floristic affinities in the south and a more Atlantic floristic composition in the north."


This scenario of forests and jungles is very different from the grasslands and prairies of Uruguay, and the Pampas region of Buenos Aires in Argentina, and the arid steppes of Patagonia. The people living in South America during this period (if we accept them having reached the region 25-30 kya) would have enjoyed a rich environment that is now totally submerged. I


The difficulties and limitations of underwater archaeology


Unfortunately, most of this submerged area is part of Argentina's continental shelf. Research funds are limited and scarce in Argentina, so very few underwater sites have been studied (see Ciarlo, 2009). Most of the underwater sites involve post-European-Discovery sites like ships or inland places in lakes. In Uruguay, where the situation is similar, there have been "increasing discoveries of archaeological material from submerged sites redeposited on beaches by storm events" (see López Mazz, 2004) these findings include fossils of megafaunal animals from the former deltaic area of the River Plate, now submerged by the sea.


Underwater archaeology is complex, expensive, and requires scuba diving gear and special equipment such as pumps, support shipes, etc. Easton, Moore, and Mason, 2020 (free access) describe the experience along the coastal area of British Columbia in Canada, showing that although it is feasible, it will not become mainstream in the forseeable future.


Underwater sites often lack stratigraphic context, and objects dredged up from the seabed are isolated from their original emplacement making it hard to reach useful conclusions about them. For instance the "Chinese anchors" dredged off the ocean floor close to Catalina Island, California in November 1973 have been controversial. Brought up from the bottom by a United States Geological Survey expedition from the Patton Escarpment, the donught-shaped stone was believed to be part of Chinese Junk dated to 3,000 years old. It was followed by the discovery of stones shaped like Chinese anchors at Palos Verdes Peninsula, close to Los Angeles by Baldwiyn and Meistrell in 1975 (see these two references: Mc Ginty, 1983 p. 54, and University of San Diego, 1980 p. 4). However, Frank Frost, 1982, suggested they were recent, not more than 100-years-old.


Comments


With the main migration corridors, and sites linked to the shores of lower sea levels, now submerged and out of reach, how can be so sure about the dates for the movement of people around the world?


It is reasonable to assume that the first migrants exploited the coastal environments before spreading inland into the continents, yet we can only access sites located on dry land, which are certainly younger than those under the sea.

H. erectus in Georgia 1.8 Ma (Kvemo Orozmani site). Aug. 2025 discovery


After my recent post on Homo georgicus and the Dmanisi site in Georgia, eastern Europe. I read about other sites in the area, and learned that in the Georgian village of Orozmani, roughly 13 km (8 miles) from Dmainsi, two remarkable discoveries had been made: in 2021 a tooth was found, and in July of 2025, a 1.8-million-year-old jawbone was dug up, it belongs to Homo erectus. The map above gives some perspective. The distance, in a straight line, from the closest point of Africa to Dmanisi (Suez Canal), and the site in Dmanisi is 1,600 km, or 1,000 miles. These people moved all the way from the alleged cradle of mankind in Turkana, Kenya, and Olduvai in Tanzania, to Sinai to bridge the Red Sea (2,900 km - 1,800 mi.) and then enter an unknown territory to trek another 1,600 km - 1,000 miles north into the Caucasus Region.


Implications


In what is now Georgia (Dmanisi and Kvemo Orozmani) these hominins could have evolved becoming H. erectus. Erectus later moved west deeper into Asia (where we find them in Indonesia and China), and being the top hominins of their era, they also surely back-migrated into Africa, where they evolved into H. heidelbergensis / rhodesiensis, from which our Neanderthal and Denisovan ancestors arose, leaving Africa for a second time. Those remaining in Africa evolved into archaic African sapiens ancestors. Perhaps, at the same time, the Asian erectus in the Far Eastern parts of Asia evolved into the archaic sapiens that the Chinese have been uncovering there.


The Papers on the Orozmani site


There is only one paper on this site and most of the information comes from the media reporting the findings. Apparently an international team of reasearchers from different European countries have been digging here since 2021. That year stone tools and the bones of animals hade been discovered and dated to a similar age to the nearby Dmanisi site (1.77 to 1.84 million years). The tooth has not yet been associated with any hominin. The jawbone from the summer of 2025 seems to belong to a H. erectus. See this media news release.


The only reference I have found (Google Scholar and combing the Internet) is this one:

Its abstract is the given below. Note that this paper dates back to March 2023, and is reporting the first findings, not the jawbone.


"The Southern Caucasus represent one of the hubs for the earliest range expansions of hominins during the Early Pleistocene, as evidenced by the extensive archaeological site at Dmanisi, Georgia. Here, we present findings from a new Lower Paleolithic archaeological site in Georgia: Kvemo Orozmani, which is located approximately twenty kilometers west of Dmanisi. Previous dating and analyses of phytoliths and sedimentology correlated the Kvemo Orozmani and nearby Zemo Orozmani sequences to the Dmanisi stratigraphy, indicating roughly contemporaneous localities (Messager et al., 2011). A recent revisit to the Kvemo Orozmani profile revealed Oldowan-like stone artifacts along with faunal remains. Subsequent excavations began in 2020 and have produced more lithic artifacts, faunal remains from numerous carnivores and ungulates, and a hominin tooth. The latter find doubles the number of hominin-bearing Early Pleistocene localities in the Southern Caucasus and offers potential insights into the hominin populations who expanded into this region. Here, we present our initial findings on site formation, archaeology, taphonomy, and paleontology and how this site fits into the greater context of the earliest hominin expansions into Eurasia."


Interestingly it mentions "Oldowan-like stone artifacts" which are pre-Homo erectus, the erectus people developed the Acheulean lithic techology, Oldowan is associated with H. habilis, though a recent study published this year suggest that another group of hominins, the Paranthropus boisei, could have used Oldowan techniques around 2.8 million years ago.

It has the same title, but seems like a presentation of the paper, not the paper itself. It includes the tooth, coprolites, and the tools. The following map is from this pdf.

It also includes images of their stone tools, which look very primitive, almost geofacts. Clearly Oldowan and not the Acehulean tools of H. erectus. As mentioned further up, Oldowan means primitive hominins, like H. habilis, Paranthroupus and also, some australopithecus. The image below is from the same 2023 paper.

Now we will have to wait for the publication on this 2025 jaw discovery and for the identification of the hominin that provided the tooth.

Sertorious and unknown Islands in the Atlantic 72 BC (by Plutarch)


Ancient Navigators Series


Plutarch was a Greek Historian, Philosopher, Author who lived during the peak of the Roman Empire (46-122 AD) in his biography of Sertorius written in 75 AD, gives us a biography of Quintus Sertorius (c.123-72 BC), a Roman military commander and official who rebelled against the Roman Senate during a civil war period, and took over Spain, which he ruled for eight years until he was murdered.


Continuing the series of posts on ancient transatlantic voyages, I came across this bio, and some interesting points mentioned in it. Below is a quote from Plutarch's text (Online here), where Sertorius it about to engage an enemy in the Atlantic Ocean, but his ships are disbanded across the Ocean. In it, he mentions "islands" in the Atlantic:


"...Sertorius made ready to fight him by sea, although his ships were not built for strength, but for lightness and swift sailing; but a violent west wind raised such a sea that many of them were run aground and shipwrecked, and he himself, with a few vessels, being kept from putting further out to sea by the fury of the weather, and from landing by the power of his enemies, were tossed about painfully for ten days together, amidst the boisterous and adverse waves.
He escaped with difficulty, and after the wind ceased, ran for certain desert islands scattered in those seas, affording no water, and after passing a night there, making out to sea again, he went through the straits of Cadiz, and sailing outward, keeping the Spanish shore on his right hand, landed a little above the mouth of the river Baetis, where it falls into the Atlantic Sea, and gives the name to that part of Spain. Here he met with seamen recently arrived from the Atlantic islands, two in number, divided from one another only by a narrow channel, and distant from the coast of Africa ten thousand furlongs
[My comment: 2000 km or 1,250 miles]. These are called the Islands of the Blest; rain falls there seldom, and in moderate showers, but for the most part they have gentle breezes, bringing along with them soft dews, which render the soil not only rich for ploughing and planting, but so abundantly fruitful that it produces spontaneously an abundance of delicate fruits, sufficient to feed the inhabitants, who may here enjoy all things without trouble or labour. The seasons of the year are temperate, and the transitions from one to another so moderate that the air is almost always serene and pleasant. The rough northerly and easterly winds which blow from the coasts of Europe and Africa, dissipated in the vast open space, utterly lose their force before they reach the islands. The soft western and southerly winds which breathe upon them sometimes produce gentle sprinkling showers, which they convey along with them from the sea, but more usually bring days of moist, bright weather, cooling and gently fertilizing the soil, so that the firm belief prevails, even among the barbarians, that this is the seat of the blessed and that these are the Elysian Fields celebrated by Homer."


Blest

The Elysian fields were the paradise, the resting place for the dead. And the two "Blest" Ilses or "Blessed", also known as "Fortunate" Islands were the same.


The Greek geographer Strabo (~64 BC - ~24 AD) mentions them as follows "the Islands of the Blessed they speak of, which we know are still pointed out to us not far distant from the extremities of Maurusia, and opposite to Gades." (Geography, 3.2.13) Placing them close to Cadiz (Madeira See this interesting resource on Blest, online.


Roman geographer and naturalist Pliny the Elder also wrote about them:


"CHAP 37 32 THE FORTUNATE ISLANDS
There are some authors who think that beyond these
[beyond the islands of Purple, along the coast of Mauritania] are the Fortunate Islands and some others the number of which Sebosus gives as well as the distances informing us that Juno is an island seven hundred and fifty miles distant from He states also that Pluvialia and Capraria are the same distance from Junonia to the west and that in Pluvialia the only fresh water to be obtained is rain water then states that at a distance of two hundred and fifty miles from these opposite the left of Mauritania and situate in the of the sun at the eighth hour are the Fortunate one of which from its undulating surface has the name of Invallis and another that of Planasia from the peculiarity of its appearance He states also that the circumference of Invallis is three hundred miles and that trees grow a height of one hundred and fourteen feet. Relative to the Fortunate Islands Juba has ascertained the following facts that they are situate to the south in nearly a westerly direction and at a distance from the Purple of six hundred and twenty five miles the sailing being for two hundred and fifty miles due west and then three and seventy five towards the east. He states that the first is called Ombrios and that it presents no traces of whatever that among the mountains there is a lake and some trees which bear a strong resemblance to giant fennel and from which water is extracted that drawn those that are black is of a bitter taste but that produced the white ones is agreeable and good for drinking. He states also that a second island has the name of Junonia but it contains nothing beyond a small temple of stone also that in its vicinity there is another but smaller island of the same name and then another called Capraria which is in fested by multitudes of huge lizards. According to the same author in sight of these islands is Ninguaria which has received that name from its perpetual snows this island abounds also in fogs. The one next to it is Canaria it contains vast multitudes of dogs of very large size two of which were brought home to Juba there are some traces of buildings to be seen here. While all these islands abound in fruit and birds of every kind this one produces in great numbers the date palm which bears the caryota also pine nuts. Honey too abounds here and in the rivers papyrus and the fish called silurus are found. These islands however are greatly annoyed by the putrefying bodies of monsters which are constantly thrown up by the sea."


Once again, close to Mauritania and in the Atlantic, Pliny even names the "Canary" Island. Note however, that he mentions rivers, withy papyrus and fish. There are no rivers in any of the islands of the Atlantic Ocean (excluding the British Isles), this means that these islands were part of a continent, either Africa or America.


The "giant fennel" plants are interesting, since fennel is a plant found in Eurasia and the Mediterranean, however, in North America, including Mexico, there is a native species known as osha (Ligusticum porteri) as well as Lomatium species that have flowers similar to fennel.

The small stone temple on the Isle of Junonia shows that either the natives (not mentioned in the text) or previous voyagers built it. Was it a Greek, Roman, Carthaginian temple? Or was it some temple on the coast of Yucatan?


Most scholars place these islands in the Canary Islands, however, while discussing their placement in Ptolemy's map drawn by the Greek astronomer and geographer Ptolemy (100-170 AD), where they appear roughly 13°N, 0° E, Robert Hues in his "A learned treatise of Globes..." (1638), (see p. 96) considers that they are in fact the Cape Verde Islands, further south along the coast of Africa (but, these also lack rivers).


Closing Comments


These texts show that the ancient Romans and Greek were aware of islands in the Atlantic Ocean, but lacking the adequate instruments, could not place them accurately on a map. It is likely that Sertorious discovered some islands and believed they were the Fortunate Isles, he probably visited the Azores, or even sailed across the Atlantic. However, we will never know for sure.

The Genetics of Southern Patagonia


The genetics of the Southern Patagonian natives is more complex than expected. A paper published in Nature on Aug. 3, 2020 (Nakatsuka, N., Luisi, P., Motti, J.M.B. et al. Ancient genomes in South Patagonia reveal population movements associated with technological shifts and geography. Nat Commun 11, 3868 (2020). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-020-17656-w) explains the possible admixtures that led to the native populations in Tierra del Fuego and the Southern continental tip of Patagonia.


The authors noted that the natives that adapted to a seafaring life (marine adaptation) either "adopted the technology or invented it independently", they didn't find support that a there was a "large-scale immigration into South Patagonia of people from the north" who were already skilled in living off the sea.


Instead they found that a group of people came from the Northwest (along the Chilean Pacific Ocean coast) after the initial colonization event, around 5000 years ago (as characterized by the remains found at Ayayema ~4700 BP) these people had adopted a maritime economy and replaced the original people that had settled in this area. These latecomers:


"replac[ed] the lineages related to Punta Santa Ana (~6600 bp) and La Arcillosa2 (~5800 bp) that were previously established in South Patagonia itself. The arrival of this new stream of people could be related to the change in lithic technology between ~5500 and 3100 bp, characterized by the interruption of green obsidian use and the introduction of large biface projectile points in the Western Archipelago and Beagle Channel regions."


Archaeologists had noticed that green obsidian, a sharp volcanic glass that had been used in this region 6700 to 6300 years BP vanished, and later (5500 to 3100 BP) stone tools were made from other materials.


There was a simultaneous change in stone tools at that time.


The authors point out that "The disruption in green obsidian use has been hypothesized to reflect a loss of cultural knowledge about the location of the source of this raw material, potentially due to arrival of new people unfamiliar with the landscape."


There was another migration from the Chilean region, characterized by remains found in Central Chile. (Perhaps these people moved pushed by the migration that brought the Mapuche people into Chile?). This final group brought new genetic traits and spread between 4700 and 2000 BP. The authors wonder if the "shared linguistic family between North, Central, and South Patagonia groups in historical and modern times could be related to this signal." I assume they refer to the language of the tehuelche people, known as chon

Mapuche: Late Arrival


I have posted about the Mapuche-Guaraní link in the past. Now I have included more information on this matter in my book's second edition, a brief snippet is shown below:


Dillehay in 2007,(1) noting the similar cultural traits (ceramic, funeral practices), language similarities, and genetics, suggested an association between the Mapuche and the Amazonian natives.
A study published in 2022 analyzed ancient human DNA from the cement attaching head lice nits and found that they support a “major migration wave, occurring around 2,000 years BP from the ancient Proto Tupí/Tupí of the Amazonian lowlands (northwest Amazon) toward south Amazonia and the east Coast, spanning ∼4,000 km.”(2) The expansion continued across Argentina and reached the Andes.
This migration was probably caused by a growing population requiring new lands for farming or, as a response to a drier climate at that time. The authors concluded that “The three Calingasta [San Juan province, Argentina] ancient mummies analyzed in this study show for the first time that the original peoples of San Juan, Calingasta, came from Amazonia about 2,000 years BP… help[ing] decipher a piece of the puzzle of pre-Columbian ancient migrations within South America, of an impressive move spanning 5,000-6,500 km. [3,100-4,040 mi.]” Interestingly, Calingasta is only 160 km (100 mi.) to the east of the Mapuche homeland in Central Chile. Another study from 2023 pointed out that “the fact that together, regional varieties of Mapudungun [Mapuche language] still form a coherent single language is consistent with a relatively recent common origin, followed by geographical expansion and divergence over a timescale of the order of many centuries, but not millennia.”(3)

The timing of this Out-Of-Amazon migration seems to coincide with the displacement of people into Patagonia from Central Chile

Cacao 1 site is 37 to 42,000 years old


An update with additional information regarding a post from October 2021, (Human hair 40,000 years old in Argentina (Cacao 1.A cave). I found a reference to a publication in a Conference that took place in 2023.


The paper was named Investigaciones en cueva Cacao 1.a (Antofagasta de la Sierra Catamarca): interdisciplinariedad y nuevas líneas de evidencias and was presented at a conference (I Jornadas de Arqueología de Antofagasta de la Sierra) on March 21, 2023. The event was organized by the Universidad Nacional de Catamarca amd was published in the Libro de resúmenes de las I Jornadas de Arqueología de Antofagasta de la Sierra (book) by that university (ISBN: 978-950-746-280-1).Source - Conicet


The paper's abstract reads:


The Antofagasta de la Sierra micro-region is characterized by a diversity of archaeological sites that have occupations that date back to the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. The site Cueva Cacao 1.A (CC1.A) is set at the confluence of the Curuto and Cacao canyons. It is a stone shelter that has occupations from different periods. Inside of it we found a stratum composed mainly of vegetation remains and fine compact sedimentary material, originated by the disaggregation and trampling of the feces of extinct fauna (Layer 5). Stratigraphic excavations in this layer allowed the recovery of formatized artifacts and debris from the working of different stone varieties (vulcanites and obsidians), bone remains of extinct megafauna, and fibers of various species. Carbon-14 dating of this stratum gave a range of approximately 42,000–37,000 years BP.


The date of 42 to 37 thousand years before present is really ancient, among the oldest in the Americas, but this paper hasn't been mentioned in the media, it lies in an obscure publication, ignored.

First Asians were not Homo erectus revisited


Back in 2011 I posted The first Asians were not Homo erectus, and proposed some migration routes including one (shown in green in the map included in the post) leading to Flores Island, home of the Hobbit.


Today after reading the article on the 709,000 year-old evidence of hominins in the Philippines (see my previous post), I checked some recent papers on the Flores Island "pigmy" hominin, and found a paper suggesting that they descended from Homo habilis: The affinities of Homo floresiensis based on phylogenetic analyses of cranial, dental, and postcranial characters by Debbie Arguea, Colin P.Groves, Michael S.Y.Lee, William L.Jungersde. Journal of Human Evolution Volume 107, June 2017, Pages 107-133 Journal of Human Evolution. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhevol.2017.02.006. Below I quote from the abstract (paper behind a pay wall): note, I highlighted the bold text.


"Although the diminutive Homo floresiensis has been known for a decade, its phylogenetic status remains highly contentious. A broad range of potential explanations for the evolution of this species has been explored. One view is that H. floresiensis is derived from Asian Homo erectus that arrived on Flores and subsequently evolved a smaller body size, perhaps to survive the constrained resources they faced in a new island environment. Fossil remains of H. erectus, well known from Java, have not yet been discovered on Flores. The second hypothesis is that H. floresiensis is directly descended from an early Homo lineage with roots in Africa, such as Homo habilis; the third is that it is Homo sapiens with pathology. We use parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic methods to test these hypotheses. Our phylogenetic data build upon those characters previously presented in support of these hypotheses by broadening the range of traits to include the crania, mandibles, dentition, and postcrania of Homo and Australopithecus. The new data and analyses support the hypothesis that H. floresiensis is an early Homo lineage: H. floresiensis is sister either to H. habilis alone or to a clade consisting of at least H. habilis, H. erectus, Homo ergaster, and H. sapiens. A close phylogenetic relationship between H. floresiensis and H. erectus or H. sapiens can be rejected; furthermore, most of the traits separating H. floresiensis from H. sapiens are not readily attributable to pathology (e.g., Down syndrome). The results suggest H. floresiensis is a long-surviving relict of an early (>1.75 Ma) hominin lineage and a hitherto unknown migration out of Africa, and not a recent derivative of either H. erectus or H. sapiens."


So, the Flores hominin was not afflicted with Down syndrome, instead it was a relict of an ancient (1,750,000 year old) migration out of Africa, which as you can see above is most likely Homo habilis.


Could these "primitive" relatives have moved across the sea into the Philippines... or across Asia and into America, long before Homo erectus appeared on the face of Earth?.

The earliest modern humans outside Africa: more older than expected


For the last year, more papers have been published suggesting an earlier age for Homo sapiens and an earlier Out of Africa migration. Today I read a paper in Science that pushes our "Out of Africa" event even further back in time (not that I believe in the OOA event) in other words Humans were in Asia long before the date currently accepted for that event (did we originate in Asia and move into Africa?).

Earliest modern humans out of Africa
Recent paleoanthropological studies have suggested that modern humans migrated from Africa as early as the beginning of the Late Pleistocene, 120,000 years ago. Hershkovitz et al. now suggest that early modern humans were already present outside of Africa more than 55,000 years earlier (see the Perspective by Stringer and Galway-Witham). During excavations of sediments at Mount Carmel, Israel, they found a fossil of a mouth part, a left hemimaxilla, with almost complete dentition.
The sediments contain a series of well-defined hearths and a rich stone-based industry, as well as abundant animal remains. Analysis of the human remains, and dating of the site and the fossil itself, indicate a likely age of at least 177,000 years for the fossil—making it the oldest member of the Homo sapiens clade found outside Africa.

Abstract
To date, the earliest modern human fossils found outside of Africa are dated to around 90,000 to 120,000 years ago at the Levantine sites of Skhul and Qafzeh. A maxilla and associated dentition recently discovered at Misliya Cave, Israel, was dated to 177,000 to 194,000 years ago, suggesting that members of the Homo sapiens clade left Africa earlier than previously thought. This finding changes our view on modern human dispersal and is consistent with recent genetic studies, which have posited the possibility of an earlier dispersal of Homo sapiens around 220,000 years ago. The Misliya maxilla is associated with full-fledged Levallois technology in the Levant, suggesting that the emergence of this technology is linked to the appearance of Homo sapiens in the region, as has been documented in Africa.

So now we have a date of 177 to 194,000 years BP for humans in the Middle East. Meaning they got there even earlier -or did by chance did the teeth belong to the first arrival?. Now I ask why suppose that the H. sapiens went "OUT" of Africa instead of reaching Israel from some place in Asia and then going "INTO" Africa.


As usual, more discoveries will force change on closed minds

Early man in Northern Yukon 300,000 years ago


This paper dating back to the 1980s: Stratigraphic, Sedimentological and Faunal Evidence for the Occurrence of Pre-Sangamonian artifacts in Northern Yukon by Jopling, AV, WN Irving, and BF Beebe. 1981.Arctic 34 (1): 3-33, reports evidence of ancient human presence in Yukon - Alaska. An excerpt from the paper is very interesting:


"... It is interesting that these early human inhabitants predate the extinction in Europe and western Asia of most or all populations of Homo sapiens neandertalensis. Indeed, if Unit 1 is of Illinoian = Riss age, these artefacts probably are older than Mousterian cultures and Neandertal Man. Elsewhere, Irving (1978a, b) has commented on a plausible relationship of these early cultures to the Early Palaeolithic of the Far East, ar elationship anticipated by Chard (e.g. 1963) and more recently by Rouse (19801, although terminologies differ. Bryan (1978) has published an unusual human calotte from Brazil which beckons renewed attention in this connection. In a recent announcement Chia et al. (1979) describe a large collection of vertebrate fossils and stone artefacts found near Hsuchiayao in Yangkao County, Shansi, China. They attribute the entire collection to an age comparable with that of the Riss (Illinoian) glaciation. The associated human skeletal remains are said to be intermediate between Homo erectus and Homo neandertalensis (sic). Elsewhere Medvedev (1979) appears to have documented the northward progress ofHomo sp. as far as the Aldan Plateau in Siberia, 200 000 or more years ago. We must now, therefore, entertain seriously the possibility that a variant of Homo erectus reached the Western Hemisphere, as recently suggested by Yoshizaki (pers. comm., 1981). If true, this must profoundly affect both studies of the origin of Homo sapiens and studies of New World populations..."

An earlier dispersal of Modern Humans or an Asian origin for mankind?


A very interesting paper by Liu, W. et al. in Nature The earliest unequivocally modern humans in southern China http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/nature15696 (2015) reports having found modern human teeth in Southern China that are at least 80,000 years old, and up to 120,000 years old. This is clearly at odds with other papers that suggest a much later "Out Of Africa" event.


The Abstract reads:


"The hominin record from southern Asia for the early Late Pleistocene epoch is scarce. Well-dated and well-preserved fossils older than ~45,000 years that can be unequivocally attributed to Homo sapiens are lacking. Here we present evidence from the newly excavated Fuyan Cave in Daoxian (southern China). This site has provided 47 human teeth dated to more than 80,000 years old, and with an inferred maximum age of 120,000 years. The morphological and metric assessment of this sample supports its unequivocal assignment to H. sapiens. The Daoxian sample is more derived than any other anatomically modern humans, resembling middle-to-late Late Pleistocene specimens and even contemporary humans. Our study shows that fully modern morphologies were present in southern China 30,000–70,000 years earlier than in the Levant and Europe. Our data fill a chronological and geographical gap that is relevant for understanding when H. sapiens first appeared in southern Asia. The Daoxian teeth also support the hypothesis that during the same period, southern China was inhabited by more derived populations than central and northern China. This evidence is important for the study of dispersal routes of modern humans. Finally, our results are relevant to exploring the reasons for the relatively late entry of H. sapiens into Europe. Some studies have investigated how the competition with H. sapiens may have caused Neanderthals’ extinction (see ref. 8 and references therein). Notably, although fully modern humans were already present in southern China at least as early as ~80,000 years ago, there is no evidence that they entered Europe before ~45,000 years ago. This could indicate that H. neanderthalensis was indeed an additional ecological barrier for modern humans, who could only enter Europe when the demise of Neanderthals had already started."


In the article (by some odd miracle I was granted Online access to the article by the nature.com content sharing initiative) it mentions that: "This evidence could support different origins and/or dispersal routes for modern humans across Asia". And indeed it does. Here we have humans in China 80 to 120 kya while they failed to reach Europe until 35 to 75 kya. The authors attribute this to the fact that: "... the possibility that H. Neanderthalensis was for a long time and additional barrier for modern human's expansion...".


An article by E. Callaway also in Nature includes this interesting comment: "Although Hublin says there is a good case that the Daoxian teeth are older than 80,000 years, he notes that several of the teeth have visible cavities, a feature uncommon in human teeth older than 50,000 years. “It could be that early modern humans had a peculiar diet in tropical Asia,” he says. “But I am pretty sure that this observation will raise some eyebrows." Martinon-Torres says her team plans to look more closely at the cavities and the diet of the Daoxian humans by examining patterns of tooth wear."


Dental cavities are much older than mankind. Cavities have been found in a distant relative, the Paranthropus robustus, that lived in Africa 2 million years ago. However the bacteria that causes tooth decay seems to have become more prevalent among humans after the invention of agriculture. Perhaps because it provided more carbohydrates in the diet, a good source of sugars for the tooth-decay bacteria. Nevertheless, a diet with plenty of fruit in subtropical China could also cause cavities.


The idea of an ancient dispersal out of Africa and admixture in Asia with even more archaic migrants is not new and has recently received support (see: Early modern human dispersal from Africa: genomic evidence for multiple waves of migration (2015), Francesca Tassi, Silvia Ghirotto, Massimo Mezzavilla, Sibelle Torres Vilaça, Lisa De Santi, Guido Barbujani. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1101/022889). However others have contended that dispersal took place only recently (See: Levantine cranium from Manot Cave (Israel) foreshadows the first European modern humans (2015), Israel Hershkovitz, et al., Nature 520, 216–219 (09 April 2015) doi:10.1038/nature14134) some 60 to 40 thousand years (kyr) before present (BP) as demonstrated by the former oldest remains of modern H. sapiens outside of Africa at Manot Cave (Western Galilee, Israel) dated to 54.7 +/- 5.5 kyr BP.


There has been another paper by Wu Liu et al., (2010). (Human remains from Zhirendong, South China, and modern human emergence in East Asia, PNAS 19201–19206, doi: 10.1073/pnas.1014386107) which clearly states that: "...The Zhiren Cave human remains, securely dated to at least 100 kya (early MIS 5), therefore represent the oldest evidence of derived modern human morphology in East Asia....The age and morphology of the Zhiren Cave human remains support a modern human emergence scenario for East Asia involving dispersal with assimilation or populational continuity with gene flow. It also places the Late Pleistocene Asian emergence of modern humans in a pre-Upper Paleolithic context and raises issues concerning the long-term Late Pleistocene coexistence of late archaic and early modern humans across Eurasia."


So, how did these modern humans reach China 80 to 120 Kya? Did they leave Africa even earlier? Did they originate outside of Africa?


Apparently the old peopling wave some 130 kya proposed by Hugo Reyes-Centeno, Silvia Ghirotto, Florent Détroit, Dominique Grimaud-Hervé, Guido Barbujani, and Katerina Harvati ( Genomic and cranial phenotype data support multiple modern human dispersals from Africa and a southern route into Asia. PNAS, April 21, 2014 DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1323666111) is a fact. The South Asian route could explain an early modern H. sapiens in south China.


But there was admixing with other archaic people in Asia, the Denisovans are one of those groups, and did mix into the ancestors of Melanesians.


An early 130 kya wave of humans may have also headed north and then west, into America, reaching the New World 100,000 years earlier than what is now currently accepte...
