The history of humans in Africa (a new preprint)


The research article posted on July 28, 2026 in non-peer-reviewed bioRxiv, titled Ancient tree-topologies and gene-flow processes among human lineages in Africa, by Gwenna Breton et al. (doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/2024.07.15.603519) looked into the evolution of human beings inside Africa. The authors sampled the genes of different African populations and using AI ("extensive simulations and machine-learning Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC)"), they compared different models to explain how our species evolved in that continent over the past couple of million years. The paper reports that the best-fitting model is one where "tree-like population histories with long periods of drift separated by short pulses of unidirectional gene-flow better explain the data than continuous gene-flow."


It should be noted that the authors state that their model did so "Without invoking archaic admixture"


The paper notes that instead of repeated migrations of populations, that lead to intermingling, the best models are those with "instantaneous gene-flow processes." This implies that isolated populations co-existed in Africa and time to time they quickly exchanged alleles: " ...our results unambiguously favor an evolutionary history of African lineages ancestral to a variety of Central and Southern African populations where Homo sapiens populations experienced long periods of isolation and drift, followed by short periods of possibly asymmetric gene-flow, which may in turn have induced some reticulations among lineages"


The first modern humans, according to this paper, were the Khoe-San (KS) people who are now found in South Africa and Botswana, they split from a basal lineage between 265,000 and 398,000 yearws ago. Then the rainforest hunter gatherers of Western Africa split from those of Central Africa (called RHG and RHGn, respectively, in the paper), between 127,000 and 190,000 years ago.


These findings differ from those of Ragsdale, A. P. et al., (2023) and the authors note that their dates are olde than the 110,000-135,000 year timeline for the KS split given in that study, and attribute the differenct to Ragsdale et al's use of "very ancient genetic structures, long before Homo sapiens emergence, a feature that is unspecified in our scenarios which considered simply a single ancestral population in which all extant lineages ultimately coalesce."


They agree that there are limitations to their study and that a "large effective population ancestral to all extant populations here investigated" could have existed, and future studeis should look into "very ancient substructures and reticulations within our ancestral population, prior to the original divergence between Southern and Central African populations." The authors also note that "where the ancestors of extant Khoe-San populations lived at that time remains unknown and is nevertheless needed to further elaborate possible scenarios for the causes of the genetic divergence here inferred... similarly as above for the Northern and Southern Khoe-San populations divergence, where the ancestors of extant Eastern and Western Rainforest Hunter-Gatherers lived remains unknown..."


We tend to consider modern Africans as being the same as the ancient ones, those living 100,000 or 200,000 years ago. But, they were not the same. There is a vast space of time of thousands of generations of people during which the genes accumulated mutations, admixing with archaics, and evolving under the pressure of natural selection. The paper recognizes these factors: "... Central African Rainforest Hunter-Gatherer and Southern African Khoe-San populations have had, respectively, extensive time for selection processes, including adaptive introgression processes, to have influenced independently both groups of populations as well as populations within each group separately."


Archaic admixture


The authors state that there is no need to invoke archaic introgression to account for the diversity in the genetic makeup of the Central and South African people. In fact, they "... did not explore possible contributions from unsampled lineages, whether from non-Homo sapiens or from ancient “ghost” human populations, and therefore cannot formally evaluate such possibilities."


But they know that archaics contributed even though they don't say so: they acknowledge that their method can be used to evaluate "scenarios comprising possible contributions from ancient or ghost unsampled populations; where the burden of proof lies on showing that scenarios with archaic admixture fit specific parts of the data significantly better than scenarios without such archaic admixture."


Interestingly, regarding the archaics and their contribution to modern Africans, the authors note that there is no ancient DNA available from ancient African fossils and that this lack of data is a handicap: "In any case, the complexification of scenario-specifications to account for possible past “archaic” or “ancient” introgressions will not fundamentally solve the issue of the current lack of reliable ancient genomic data older than a few hundreds or thousands of years from Sub-Saharan Africa 3,110,111. Indeed, analogously to archaic admixture signals that were identified outside Africa only when ancient DNA data were made available for Neanderthals and Denisovans, we imperatively need to overcome this lack of empirical ancient DNA data in Africa to formally test whether, or not, ancient human or non-human now extinct lineages have significantly contributed to shaping extant African diversity." I am convinced that when hard data is obtained from African fossils, there will be many interesting surprises.


Another finding is that the mixing after long periods of isolation took place around the time of the purported Out of Africa migration of modern humans: "Interestingly, we found strong indications for almost synchronic events of introgressions having occurred during the Last Interglacial Maximum in Africa 73, between ∼85,000 and ∼135,000 years ago... They involved gene-flow between lineages ancestral to Khoe-San populations and ancestors of Rainforest Hunter-Gatherer neighbors on the one hand and, on the other hand, between lineages ancestral to Khoe-San populations and the lineage ancestral to all Rainforest Hunter-Gatherers... we estimated that the instantaneous gene-flow event between the ancestral Rainforest Hunter-Gatherers lineage and that of their extant neighbors seemingly occurred synchronically to the genetic Out-of-Africa. This would imply that possible climatic and ecological shifts at that time may not have only induced population divergences and displacement, but may also have triggered population gene-flow."


This also implies that there was a blending of isolated populations, that contributed diversity to those remaining inside of Africa while another population that migrated out of Africa carried fewer alleles, and less diversity with them (see my post On the Diversity of Africans). It also implies that the Khoisan people were split from the rest, and isolated in Southern Africa with their genetics "enriched" by intermingling with other formerly isolated groups. Did they also interact with archaics like the Homo naledi?

Hualongdong skull from China supports pre-OOA Homo sapiens evolution in Asia


A paper published last April (Archaic human remains from Hualongdong, China, and Middle Pleistocene human continuity and variation by Xiu-Jie Wu et al., PNAS May 14, 2019 116 (20) 9820-9824; first published April 29, 2019 https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1902396116) challenges the commonly accepted viewpoint on human evolution: a skull that is 300,000 years old shows a mixture of ancient Asian and anatomically modern human (AMH) features.


The skull - Hualongdong 6 or HLD 6 for short- is one of a growing group of Asian, and specially Chinese crania displaying a mosaic of archaic and AMH features.

Why is HLD 6 important? Because it questions the Out of Africa model (AMH originated in Africa and spread across the world 60 Kya). It is clear evidence that shows the legacy of Homo erectus in Asia: they were successful, and evolved into Asian populations of Homo sapiens long beore African Homo sapiens left their homeland.


The abstract of this paywalled paper says:


"Newly found ∼300,000-y-old human remains from Hualongdong (HLD), China, including a largely complete skull (HLD 6), share East Asian Middle Pleistocene (MPl) human traits of a low vault with a frontal keel (but no parietal sagittal keel or angular torus), a low and wide nasal aperture, a pronounced supraorbital torus (especially medially), a nonlevel nasal floor, and small or absent third molars. It lacks a malar incisure but has a large superior medial pterygoid tubercle. HLD 6 also exhibits a relatively flat superior face, a more vertical mandibular symphysis, a pronounced mental trigone, and simple occlusal morphology, foreshadowing modern human morphology. The HLD human fossils thus variably resemble other later MPl East Asian remains, but add to the overall variation in the sample. Their configurations, with those of other Middle and early Late Pleistocene East Asian remains, support archaic human regional continuity and provide a background to the subsequent archaic-to-modern human transition in the region."


So despite my reservations on Chinese science and the state promoted Sino-centric view (akin to the deplorable Aryanism promoted by India's Hindu nationalist BJP party), I must acknowledge science and proof. HLD 6 is proof of human multiregional evolution.

Archaic Ghost population admixed with Modern Humans in Africa


A paper published on April 26, 2019, Whole-genome sequence analysis of a Pan African set of samples reveals archaic gene flow from an extinct basal population of modern humans into sub-Saharan populations by Belen Lorente-Galdos et al. (Genome Biology201920:77 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13059-019-1684-5) looks into a "Ghost" archaic population (XAf) in Africa which admixed archaic genes into humans (AMH or anatomically modern humans) there.


The authors write:


"We identify the fingerprint of an archaic introgression event in the sub-Saharan populations included in the models (~ 4.0% in Khoisan, ~ 4.3% in Mbuti Pygmies, and ~ 5.8% in Mandenka) from an early divergent and currently extinct ghost modern human lineage."

These are quite high values. The authors continue:


"Our results suggest interbreeding of AMHs with an archaic ghost population that diverged from the AMH lineage at a temporal scale similar to the one between the Neanderthals and Denisovans.
This observation would indicate the presence of a deep archaic population substructure also in the African continent and contrasts with previous studies that suggested that a basal lineage had a major impact only on particular western African populations.
Furthermore, our analyses showed that the estimated proportion of Neanderthal ancestry in Eurasian populations is highly sensitive to the presence of XAf population, increasing by a threefold the amount of archaic introgression.
This result suggests that the amount of Neanderthal ancestry out of Africa that so far has been estimated could be an underestimation by not having considered events of archaic introgression in Africa in the tested models.
"

I find the last part very interesting, the paper is suggesting that we -non-Africans- may have even more Neanderthal genes than current studies suggest, because they have not considered this XAf admixture into the humans leaving Africa.


The paper downplays a possible "Into Africa" event where Neanderthal genes were passed on to Africans by Neanderthals and assume the source of those genes are more recent: Europeans or Asians. The authors write:


"Traces of Neanderthal introgression have been observed not only in North African populations, who are in fact historically and genetically different from sub-Saharan peoples, but also in other African populations, for instance in Yoruba genomes, although they were most likely introduced through recent Eurasian admixture."

They defined some timelines (we quote them below):


"The AMH lineage and the one from the archaic Eurasian populations diverged 603 kya" the CI is 495.85 to 796.86 kya


"The ghost XAf archaic population and the AMH lineage split 528 kya" (CI 230.16 to 700.06 kya)


"The Denisovan and Neanderthal lineages split 426 kya" (CI 332.77 to 538.37 kya)


Admixture of XAf was significant, considering that Neanderthal genes account for less than 2% of Eurasian genetic makeup. These are the African values of admixture:


  • 3.8% (95% CI 1.7 to 4.8%) in Khoisan
  • 3.9% (95% CI 1.3 to 4.9%) in Mbuti
  • 5.8% (95% CI 0.7 to 0.97%) in West Africa

The paper found that there was high levels of inbreeding as they "observed that ... both Khoisan and Pygmies show higher levels of ROH that are closer to the ones found in North African or Eurasian populations". ROH or Runs of Homozygosity are are regions of the chromosomes where there are many consecutive homozygoous loci and are an indication of inbreeding.


So the supposedly ancient Khoshian are very similar in their ROH to the "more recent" Eurasians, which are supposed to have undergone bottlenecks and later inbreeding.


The issue of African diversity is not addressed clearly. Although they identify some introgression regions:


"Specific candidate introgressed regions have also been identified, for instance, a 20 kbp block found exclusively in sub-Saharan populations that covers the entire MUC7 gene, a protein abundantly expressed in saliva and associated with the composition of oral microbiome [40], or 265 loci spanning ~ 20 Mbp spread across the genome that were detected in two Western African Pygmy populations"

The impact of 4% archaic genes in the overall diversity of modern Africans must be significant, and that means that their diversity is not due to Africa being the cradle of mankind but to an admixture of archaic DNA.

45 KY old African teeth from Magubike with Neanderthal and H. erectus traits...


This paper Middle Stone Age human teeth from Magubike rockshelter, Iringa Region, Tanzania, by Pamela R. Willoughby, Tim Compton, Silvia M. Bello, Pastory M. Bushozi, Anne R. Skinner and Chris B. Stringer. Published: July 31, 2018https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0200530, discusses human teeth found in Africa:


They are significant because they come from Tanzania (the Magubike rockshelter) and are apparently fom Middle Stone Age (MSA) deposits dated and a "conservative estimate of their minimum age is 45,000 years" according to the paper.


As we all know, finding human remains in this part of Africa, especially those from the Middle Stone Age (which took place between 320,000 and 30,000 years ago) is a very rare event.


The authors try to find similarities between these ancient teeth and the San people (the San are always mentioned because they are assumed to be a "relict" of the original Homo sapiens that left Africa, the "oldest" extant humans, the "most diversified" members of our species.


And they say so, albeit cautiously, in this paper: "... a number of characteristics in the Magubike teeth suggest possible San affinities.".


But as we go into the details, it seems that these teeth are indeed quite unique, and, in my opinion, not at all like those of the San people:


Quoting the authors: (bold is mine)


"In summary, the Magubike teeth have the characteristics typical of African sub-Saharan Homo sapiens Holocene teeth, but aspects of the morphology of the upper canine and third premolar are atypical for the African mid/late Pleistocene sample. However, this may be at least partly due to its North African bias. Certain traits present ― e.g. the root shape of the lateral incisor and canine, and the presence of a cingulum pit on the lateral incisor ― are rare or absent in the comparative samples. Traits specific to Homo heidelbergensis / archaic Homo sapiens and Aterian teeth are not present. Despite their large size, there is some suggestion of San affinities, though this interpretation must be very tentative, being based on a single individual."


The interesting part is the similarity with Neanderthal and Homo erectus features: (again bold is mine)


"... The pronounced buccal vertical curvature of the canine root found at Magubike is seen in early teeth, Homo erectus and Neanderthal [22, 47], but not in samples of early modern Homo sapiens (Skhūl and Qafzeh) or European Upper Palaeolithic Homo sapiens[48].
In recent teeth, the buccal surface is usually straight or has a mild curvature [49]. The few canine roots that could be observed in the Kenyan early Holocene sample, and the two in the Gwisho sample, are straight, and in the mid/late Pleistocene sample only the Broken Hill canine has similar curvature to that of the Magubike canine.
"


In other words it is not found among early modern Homo sapiens, only in Neanderthals and H. erectus. The authors continue, finding some examples of curvature in recent African samples (7% of them - a low figure) which may have come from out of African migrants in more recent times...:


"However, four instances were found in the recent sub-Saharan East/South African sample (7%). Similarly, the incomplete root of the Magubike lateral incisor has pronounced buccal vertical curvature in contrast to the more evenly tapered form of recent teeth [50]. A lateral incisor of this form occurs at the Klasies River Main site [51] and in one of four in the Gwisho sample, but in just one out of seventy-five in the recent East/South African sample."


As we see in the preceden paragraph, there are yet more morphological traits that are not at all related to modern African samples.


And the authors admit the teeth's unusual uniqueness very clearly:


"The six Magubike teeth are differentiated from African archaic Homo sapiens / Homo heidelbergensis and Aterian teeth in terms of size and the lack of morphological traits that could be associated with these groups. They are also differentiated from the Kenyan early Holocene and Gwisho samples and more recent teeth in terms of the relative size of the incisors, the incisor crown heights, the relative crown heights of the two premolars, and the long premolar roots. However, the morphological evidence is contradictory, principally in relation to the canine having traits that are rare or absent in the African mid/late Pleistocene sample, though this may be partly due to the small size of this sample and its North African bias."


They attribute this to the small sample size and its "North African bias"


But why try to find them similar to San teeth? Well, orthodoxy requires it: oldest African remains of a Homo sapiens and "oldest" extant humans (SAN) "must" be related:


"Small bodied individuals recovered from East African LSA sites have often been described as having “Khoisanoid affinities”, implying an assumed connection with the small bodied people of South Africa, including the San [75]. There are also still people in northern Tanzania today whose languages are often related to Khoisan (the Hadzabe and Sandawe), implying some possible past connections with southern African peoples [78]."


But what if... the teeth resemble Homo erectus and Neanderthal teeth because these migrated INTO AFRICA? As we can see they don't resemble the African teeth of that time or those of early Modern Homo Sapiens...

More on archaic introgression into H. sapiens in Africa: the source of African's genetic diversity


In a recent post titled African diversity is the result of admixture with archaic hominids I once again supported the notion that African genetic "diversity" is probably due to admixture between modern humans and archaic hominids in Africa and not the result of Homo sapiens having originated in Africa long ago, and all the rest of non-Africans having less "diversity" due to founder effects & bottle-necks.


Today I came across this paper: Genetic evidence for archaic admixture in Africa by Michael F. Hammer, August E. Woerner, Fernando L. Mendez, Joseph C. Watkins, and Jeffrey D. Wall. PNAS September 6, 2011. 201109300; published ahead of print September 6, 2011. https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1109300108.


The paper puts forth proof of an archaic hominin admixing with Homo sapiens during a "recent interbreeding event". The abstract says (I highlighted relevant parts in bold font):


"A long-debated question concerns the fate of archaic forms of the genus Homo: did they go extinct without interbreeding with anatomically modern humans, or are their genes present in contemporary populations? This question is typically focused on the genetic contribution of archaic forms outside of Africa. Here we use DNA sequence data gathered from 61 noncoding autosomal regions in a sample of three sub-Saharan African populations (Mandenka, Biaka, and San) to test models of African archaic admixture. We use two complementary approximate-likelihood approaches and a model of human evolution that involves recent population structure, with and without gene flow from an archaic population. Extensive simulation results reject the null model of no admixture and allow us to infer that contemporary African populations contain a small proportion of genetic material (≈2%) that introgressed ≈35 kya from an archaic population that split from the ancestors of anatomically modern humans ≈700 kya. Three candidate regions showing deep haplotype divergence, unusual patterns of linkage disequilibrium, and small basal clade size are identified and the distributions of introgressive haplotypes surveyed in a sample of populations from across sub-Saharan Africa. One candidate locus with an unusual segment of DNA that extends for >31 kb on chromosome 4 seems to have introgressed into modern Africans from a now-extinct taxon that may have lived in central Africa. Taken together our results suggest that polymorphisms present in extant populations introgressed via relatively recent interbreeding with hominin forms that diverged from the ancestors of modern humans in the Lower-Middle Pleistocene.


The authors add "... central Africa may have been the homeland of a now extinct archaic form that hybridized with modern humans".


This is an extremely interesting step in the right direction!

John Hawks on the Misliya jawbone


Below I quote John Hawks on the importance of the Misliya cave jawbone. His opinion is very interesting. Read his full post here.


(See my Previous post on this jawbone, which places modern humans outside of Africa some 177,000 to 194,000 years ago, far earlier than previously thought).


Hawks wrote:


"...There is a major change underway in how we understand “out of Africa”. I don’t think the traditional framing of “out of Africa” is very effective anymore, as leaving Africa is a tiny event, repeated many times over the last several hundred thousand years.
In the context of other discoveries, I think that “modern human” has lost much of the meaning it may once have had.
The big questions concern what was happening inside Africa, where many genetically diverse populations existed and interacted. How many ancestral populations gave rise to the growing population of modern humans after 100,000 years ago? How many African-derived people were involved in mixture with Neandertals 250,000 years ago, or 120,000 years ago? Did African-derived humans make it to China, or to Java, before 100,000 years ago?
Those are open questions, with some evidence pointing toward faster, more widespread dispersal, more mixture, and repeated genetic replacements.

Chinese Adam


A brand new paper (Wu, Crevecoeur, Liu, Xing and Trinkaus, 2014) [1], looks into the shape of the internal ear in ancient humans from China and the fact that the labyrinths in one of the specimens (Xujiayao 15) is quite similar to those of Neanderthals. The paper's objective however is not to prove admixture between Neanderthals and archaic Chinese humans (these remains are 100 ky old!). To the contrary, its purpose is to downplay the similarity and suggest that it is not due to admixture but to shared ancestral Homo features and that "many of the purported 'Neandertal' features were widespread during the Pleistocene, albeit often occurring in higher frequencies among the Neandertals" [1].


I am surprised at the efforts of the authors to separate these Chinese remains from the Neanderthals and to link them to "ancestral " non-Neanderthal archaic humans, this post describes these efforts and tries to explain possible reasons for this unusual position.


The Chinese origin of mankind


Yes, that is what is behind the attempt to de-Neanderthalize the Xujiayao 15 remains: support a Chinese origin of mankind.


Let's quote Xiu-Jie Wu and team: [1]


"Regardless of the ultimate populational and morphofunctional implications of the Xujiayao 15 and the other East Asian labyrinthine configurations, they serve to further confirm the general modern human pattern as the ancestral Homo one and to document that the apparently derived Neandertal configuration was not unique to western Eurasia. Given its presence in Europe, southwest Asia, central Asia, and now eastern Asia, it may well have been present across Eurasia during the later Pleistocene among archaic humans. As such, whether a discrete feature in itself or a secondary consequence of other aspects of morphological variation, it becomes less of a “Neandertal” marker and of broader relevance to the paleobiology of later Pleistocene Homo." [1]


The fact is that the inner ear morphology in Neanderthals is slightly different to that of modern humans. This particular shape is not present in modern humans or among the Pleistocene hominids outside of East Asia. The paper however reports that they detected the Neanderthal inner ear shape in one (1) out of four (4) East Asian crania that they studied: it appeared in the Xujaiyao 15 skull. The chart they include in their paper (see Fig. 2. in [1]) clearly shows the Xujiayao 15 skull grouped together with all the Neanderthal skulls in a neat cluster.


The authors grudgingly admit this link: "Xujiayao 15 [...] falls entirely with the Late Pleistocene Neandertals, distinct from the early and recent modern humans and from the Early and Middle Pleistocene Homo." [1]


It is of course significant because it is "the first documentation of this pattern among Pleistocene Homo outisde the Neanderthal geographical range" [1], that is, outside of the Western Eurasian territory that is well known to have been occupied by Neanderthals, which spanned the continent from Spain and France in the West to Altai, Siberia in the East.


But, as I mentioned above, they downplay this clear evidence of Neanderthal admixture and try to attribute it to other causes:


  • The "External morphology [of the labyrinth] bears little affinity to that of the Neanderthals. It shares ancestral Homo features with the Neanderthals". Of course it does, it is what you would expect because Neanderthals predate modern humans and would have "ancestral features", but as we will see below, the authors use the "ancestral features" with another meaning: Neanderthals and the Xujiayao 15 man share this ancient trait because they both got it from an even older ancestor.
  • They list some anatomical elements that are absent or different but must admit that "these aspects of Xujiayao 15 can be found on individual Neanderthal specimens..."
  • The write that "A couple of [Xujiayao] features are common among the Neanderthals but not unique to them" [1] as if this would make Xujiayao less Neanderthal-like. And then, to support this, they analyse the remains of Other Xujiayao specimens which seem different to Neanderthals, ignoring specimen #15 (which is not mentioned, making me wonder if it differs or is it similar to Neanderthals in these traits?)
  • They mention a specimen from Uzbekistan which was classed by its teeth as a Neanderthal, which also has a similar inner ear morphology but point out that it has "an apparent mix of morphological features in other aspects"[1] which are not Neanderthal. I believe that the reason for bringing up this specimen is that if remains closer to the Neanderthal homeland are not so Neanderthal-like, then why should a Chinese specimen be expected to have admixed with Neanderthals.

They emphasize that "It is tempting to use it [the labyringh morphology] as evidence of population contact (gene flow) between central and western Eurasian Neandertals and these eastern archaic humans", but the Xujiayao 15 is "otherwise distinctly 'non-Neanderthal'" (if one ignores the similar inner ear shape).


The paper concludes that despite this apparent resenmblance, the evidence seems to "suggest that many of the purported “Neandertal” features were widespread during the Pleistocene, albeit often occurring in higher frequencies among the Neandertals." [1]


The paper's efforts to ignore the presence of Neanderthals in East Asia during the period of Xujiayao 15 are indeed surprising. But then, there is a logic behind those efforts.


Admixture and its implications


These are old remains, > 100ky and that means an even older date for admixture and Neanderthal presence in the region. And that goes against the theory favored by many Chinese scholars.


Context on the Xujiayao site. The site where these Chinese remains were found is located in Shanxi Province, on the Liyigou River. The remains were discovered in 1974 and were assigned to archaic Homo sapiens.


They are old because some rhino teeth from the site were dated to 104 - 125 kya using Uranium series, but the relationship between Xujiayao bones and the teeth is still unclear.


This dating places these archaic hominins in China long before modern H. sapiens emerged from Africa (that is, if the OoA theory is correct). They could be the easternmost remains of the first Homo sapiens move out of Africa ~ 120 kya., or the result of even more archaic Asian hominins mixing with other archaic Western Eurasian populations such as Neanderthals...


The point is that Neanderthals as a group are far older than the 104 -125 ky age assigned to Xujiayao people since they date back at least 300 ky. Their older origin gave Neanderthal plenty of tieme to have reached China long ago (say 250 kya) and mixed there with late coming humans or even local hominins descended from Asian H. erectus.


In fact this is what Wu Xinzhi proposed over a decade and a half ago:


Continuity with hybridization


Studies on the cranial morphology which compared European Neanderthals and Chinese crania led Wu Xinzhi (1998, 2004)[2][3] to put forth the "continuity with hybridization" model of human evolution in China. Basically Wu Xinzhi's findings suggested that some features found among Neanderthals are also found in Chinese fossils and that this was due to admixture between Neanderthals and Mid-Late Pleistocene hominids.


Wu Xinzhi imagined that the gene flow came from Europe, now we know that Neanderthals were much closer to China (Altai), which in my opinion supports the admixture theory. [2]


The work of Wu Xinzhi was not cited in the paper by Xiu-Jie Wu and team (2014) [1] and the paper itself is against the notion of admixture despite the fact that recent genetic studies support Neander - East Asian admixture: (Wall et al., 2013) "on average the “Neanderthal haplotypes” were [found] at higher frequency in the East Asians than in the Europeans (9.6% vs. 6.4%)" and "that East Asians (Han Chinese and Japanese) are more similar to the published Neanderthal sequence than are Europeans." [7]., making it likely that there was ample admixture in the Far East.


The reason that Chinese scholars now oppose to admixture with Neanderthals is probably due to some current Sinocentric point of view: how could Neanderthal, a Western Eurasian creature (which for over a century and a half was associated with Europe) have admixed with the ancestor of modern Chinese people?


The theory of a Chinese ethno-genesis of mankind is especially attractive to the Chinese; it was supported by Chinese intellectuals from the early 1920s and later by the Communist regime right through to the 1980s.

The symbol above is the first part of the name of China, it is a rectangle struck with a line, it means Center, Middle (Zhong) the second part of the name of China means "country", hence China means "Central country". Chinese are extremely proud of their self percieved uniqueness


Initially the Peking man was proposed as a direct ancestor of Mankind, but with growing support for the Out of Africa theory, the model was later adapted to contemplate interaction and hybridzation between the Peking Man (H. erectus) and other populations, evolving into Homo sapiens in situ, in China, and being the origin of modern Chinese.[4][5]


I believe that Wu Xinzhi's support of a Neanderthal admixture made his paper not suitable for citation in the Xiu-Jie Wu et al. publication [1].


Chinese Adam


Rereading the paper by Xiu-Jie Wu and team I notice not only a reluctance to admit admixture with Neanderthal, but also a lot of emphasis placed on the fact that the alleged Neanderthal trait were actually "present across Eurasia during the later Pleistocene among archaic humans" [1] , in other words it is a local East Asian trait shared with Neanderthals in Western Eurasia.


This ties in neatly with another paper Wu Liu et al., (2010) [6] which includes the following "revealing" phrase in its title: "...modern human emergence in East Asia". This paper has the same point of view as that of Xiu-Jie Wu and team: "...derived aspects of modern human morphology were present in East Asia in the early Late Pleistocene" [6]. It seems that modern humans appeared in East Asia!!


Below I quote from Wu Liu and team's paper [6] which describes a modern like jaw found in an archaic skull in Zhiren Cave, China (bold mine):


"The human remains are securely dated [...] to the initial Late Pleistocene, >100 kya. As such, they are the oldest modern human fossils in East Asia and predate by >60,000 y the oldest previously known modern human remains in the region.
[...]The age and morphology of the Zhiren Cave human remains support a modern human emergence scenario for East Asia involving dispersal with assimilation or populational continuity with gene flow. It also places the Late Pleistocene Asian emergence of modern humans in a pre-Upper Paleolithic context and raises issues concerning the long-term Late Pleistocene coexistence of late archaic and early modern humans across Eurasia.
[...] It is not easily accommodated into any Out-of-Africa with populational replacement scenario.
[...] coexistence of late archaic and early modern humans across portions of Eurasia, and not just between Africa and Eurasia. Those late archaic humans include the Neandertals in western Eurasia until mid-MIS 3. They also encompass MIS 3 archaic humans in central Asia and Siberia and into at least MIS 5 in northern China. This emerging pattern raises the question of what subtle behavioral patterns may have limited genetic exchange between these two morphologically defined groups of human across portions of Eurasia for tens of millennia. [6]


So here is the point, these archaic Chinese hominins over 100,000 years old date back to the MIS 5 period (which began 130 kya), and are therefore older than the Neanderthals which are placed in Western Asia in MIS 3 (from 60 to 24 kya).


This seems to suggest (and I have read about this elsewhere [8]) that Neanderthals originated from East Asian hominins, the "archaic humans" features are not derived from Neanderthal, actually both groups got it from the same source, the Chinese Adam!


This [8] summarizes that theory: "The back migration of H. yunxianensis to western Eurasia, approximately 600,000 ya, is hypothesized to have led to the vicariance of the archaic species clades H. heidelbergensis/neanderthalensis in Europe and H. rhodesiensis/helmei/sapiens in Africa, replacing H. antecessor and H. leakeyi, respectively." [8]. In other words, an Out of China, which must be more appealing to Chinese scientists than an OoA.


Comment


Personally I do not care if modern humans came to be in Africa, Asia, Oceania or America. I am marvelled by the mere fact that humans evolved on our precious planet Earth. However I am surprised at how nationalism influences science (well it has always done that), and manages to twist evidence to conform to certain beliefs.


In any case, and this concerns Patagonian wild men, ogres and giants, it may mean that some ancestral archaic hominin was in Eastern Asia over 150 kya and may have moved on, through Siberia and Beringia into the New World long before modern humans managed to do so. And, when the ancestors of Amerindians reached the New World, it was peopled by these odd people... monsters from which myths are born
