Brazil, ancient sites and Homo erectus in America, a 1992 paper


An old article published in 1992, by Spanish archaeologist Gabriela Martin Avila, La antiguedad del hombre en el Nordeste de Brasil (The antiquity of Man in the northeast of Brazil, Rev. do Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia, S. Paulo, 2:7-12, 1992), explores the possibilities, not only of pre-Clovis sites in America, but also even older dates.


Martin mentions that "...the most advanced theories even suggest the possibility that Homo erectus arrived in America 200,000 or 300,000 years ago." To support this statement, she cites Argentine archaeologist Juan Schobinger, and his 1988 essay "200.000 años del hombre en América: ¿Que pensar?" (200,000 years of man in America: What to think?). Schobinger, according to Martin analyzed several sites in North America, and suggested that there were "chances that Homo erectus had reached the American continent thousands of years before the Homo sapiens sapiens."


The sites are the following: Old Crow in the Canadian Yukon, excavated William Nathaniel Irving; Texas Street in San Diego (see my post on it), the Calico Site in California (I posted on it back in 2011), and Valsequillo (see my post), and Toca da Esperanca site in Brazil (more on this site below).


Pedra Furada Site


Gabriela Martin then mentions some more recent sites, equally controversial, dated to around 50 kya, like Piedra Furada in Brazil, and other more recent ones of pre-Clovis age, and concludes that:


"It is necessary to await for new evidence, always with an open mind to any new theory that may be confirmed. It is also valid to ask, "Why not?" If we know today that descendants of the Chou-Ku-Tien man, or those related to the Sinanthropus [here she refers to the H. erectus from China, the Peking man] adapted to extremely cold Siberian climates, nothing prevents them from crossing Beringia before the last interglacial period if they knew how to make fire. The case of the Australians who sailed great distances is also frequently cited when arguing for the possibility of reaching America via oceanic routes during the Pleistocene era.
An interesting theory, though still in the realm of conjecture, would be that if the
[erectus] ancestors of Homo sapiens managed to reach America, they may have been small groups that became extinct, giving rise to the long gap that preceded the arrival of other waves around 50,000 years ago. These new groups, dispersed across different regions of the continent, may also have become extinct, which would explain the long periods of unoccupied sites observed at some sites that we could call strategic, indicating gaps of 10,000 to 20,000 years. This would be the case of Boqueirão da Pedra Furada, in southeastern Piauí, to cite the most important archaeological site in northeastern Brazil, in terms of chronological sequence.
Based on the data known today, it cannot be denied that northeastern Brazil was populated by humans at least 50,000 years ago. These people, without specialized projectile points, used crude stone tools, wooden points, and traps to hunt mastodons, giant sloths, horses, llamas, and other smaller animals, including a large number of rodents and birds. Further evidence of their presence is only a matter of time.

An interesting combination that proposes not only an Homo erectus migration into America or even a transpacific voyage from Australia, but also that the erectus became extinct before modern humans reached America much more recently.


Toca da Esperanca Site


Another research paper from that period gives a thorough review, country by country of the alleged pre-Clovis sites in South America. (Lynch, T. F. (1990). El hombre de la edad glacial en suramérica: una perspectiva europea. Revista de Arquelogía Americana, 141-185). In the case of Brazil, it mentions the Toca da Esperanca site:


"...now that it has been reported in South America [about] an association of primitive quartzite tools with Pleistocene fauna, dated between 204,000 and 295,000 years ago (Beltráo and Danon 1987; de Lumley et al., 1988; Weber 1989). The Esperança Cave was first explored and appropriately named by Beltráo in 1982 and has been excavated since 1985. The preliminary results were presented at conferences in Rio de Janeiro, Turin, and Mainz in 1987 and quickly published in France, as well as in Brazil. The depth of the deposit is given as only 1.0 to 1.5 m [3 to 5 ft], but it yielded dates ranging from 2020 ± 130 BP. (radiocarbon at the highest Level 1) to 295,000 years (by the uranium-thorium method, at the lowest level)...
The Franco-Brazilian team identifies two pebble tools and a chopper from Level IV, as well as a hammer and several fáo and Danon (1987) state that at least one is specifically Clactonian in type. They also mention molds of human teeth (?), bone tools, hearth structures, and charcoal at all levels, but do not mention these in the subsequent French publication. More significantly, both reports specify that the quartz and quartzite artifacts are from rocks found only within 10 km of the cave.
The deposit is thin and the artifacts are simple, but at first glance, there seems to be no good reason not to accept this discovery of Middle Pleistocene man in America (Homo erectus?).
According to these researchers, "It is therefore not surprising that the Homo erectus who occupied the Chinese continent at least 700,000 years ago... and who domesticated fire 400,000 years ago (Chou-Kou-Tien), crossed the Bering Strait repeatedly" (de Lumley et al., 1988:245). However, it is necessary to mention that there is a serious dispute about whether Middle Pleistocene man (and specifically Peking Man) was in systematic possession of the use of fire, which is thought to have been present at Cueva Esperança, and whether it was necessarily the man who had to cross the Bering Strait (Binford and Ho 1985; Binford and Stone 1986; James 1989). Thus, the discovery at Esperanca should have implications for the archaeology of the Old World, as well as for that of the New World.
"


There seems to be some hesitation in the text: charcoal and hearths which were reported but then omitted in the French language paper, or the fact that we aren't sure if H. erectus mastered the art of fire making. But the dates 204 to 205 ky for the lowest levels, with "Clactonian" tools, which some belive were made by H. erectus while others support the notion that they were made by H. heidelbergensis. The age of this industry is 420 to 380 kya, and it predates modern humans.


Schobinger in his work also expresses his doubts about this site: "Let's admit it's difficult to accept an age of almost 300,000 years for materials found at a depth of only about 1.30 m [4.3 ft]. It's true that they are sealed by a carbonaceous-calcareous layer (and in that sense, it's in situ material), but we are told that this layer formed not much more than 20,000 years ago (Lumley et al., 1987: 929). What happened before then? Is the association of the very few quartzite stone fragments with the bones on which the U/To dating was performed reliable? Is this method entirely dependable?"

Eoliths: Siberia. 1.5 - 2.5 million year old stone tools


Continuing with my series on primitive paleolithic tools, ones that resemble Oldowan cobble pebbles, following yesterday's post on the 100 ky Texas Street, San Diego, California site excavated by George Carter (1940s-1970s), I will go back to Siberia.


Recently I posted about two sites there, Diring Yuirakh and Karama, today I will mention another one, on Ulalinka River dated to over 1.5 million years ago.


Ulalinka River site


Michael Cremo and Richard Thompson, in their 1993 work Hidden History of the Human Race mention the Ulalinka River site as follows: "In 1961, hundreds of crude pebble tools were found near Gorno-Altaisk, on the Ulalinka river in Siberia. According to a 1984 report by Russian scientists A. P. Okladinov and L. A. Ragozin, the tools were found in layers 1.5-2.5 million years old."

Little has been written about it in Western journals. The second source I encountered about it, is a travel agent based in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, that mentions the attractions in Gorno-Altaisk, and casually refers to the site on their website:


"Ulalinskaya Paleolithic site
Ulalinskaya Paleolithic site is one of the main sights in Gorno-Altaysk. It is situated on the bank of the Ulalushka River, after which the site took its name.
The site constantly attracts attention of archeologists. It was found during the excavations of 1960-1970s under the guidance of academician Alexey Okladnikov. Exactly that time more than 600 stone tools were found, referring to the age of Paleolith. It proves the fact that the territory was made habitable more than 1,5 million years ago. Although the views of geologists about this subject are still not common. Some experts determine the age of the site in the range of 100 - 350 thousand years; others indicate the date from 690 thousand to half a million years.
Unfortunately, only primitive tools, no other traces of sites of ancient people were found during excavations.
This sensational archeological find became the city’s pride. No wonder that exactly these tools are depicted in the coat of arms since 1996.
The debates over this discovery are conducted to this day - many scientists believe, it would a grand hoax of the 20th century.

Gorno-Altaysk means "Mountainous Altai" in Russian, note that (1) this article calls the river Ulaluska, and the site Ulalinskaya. (2) It suggests it may be a hoax. (3) And that the city adopted the tools in its coat of arms (pictured).


Details


The site is located in the twon of Gorno-Altaysk itself — 51°°57'20.7"N 85°58'25.5"E (see it in Google maps) which is 110 km (68 mi.) as the crow flies, from the famous Denisova Cave.

There is an English language publication A. P. Okladnikov and G. A. Pospelova, 1982 (Ulalinka, the Oldest Palaeolithic Site in Siberia p. 710–712, Current Anthropology Vol 23, No 6 (🔒 paywalled, but you can read the first page of the paper). Which says that it was discovered in 1961 on the Maima River, at its confluence with the Ulalinka River by the cemetery of Gorno-Altaysk. It describes the sedimentary layers in the dig, which produced neolithic tools from its upper layer (younger than 25,000 years - 25 ky), and then, the one with the primitive eoliths:


"The main cultural level of this section, associated with the boulder-pebble horizon, differs from the upper one and from all other known Palaeolithic sites in Siberia principally in the strikingly archaic shapes of the tools and their primitive technology. The tools were made almost entirely from pebbles of yellowish-white quartzite, whole or split in half, and sometimes from pebbles of obsidian and quartzite fragments.
The finds include choppers, chopping tools, scrapers, a peculiar pebble core and tools with a spoutlike curved projection that might have served as cutting instruments. All these tools are nearly untreated pebbles, only slightly retouched (fig 1)
[see it below]. All the artifacts are amorphous. They may sometimes have served as cutting tools, sometimes as scrapers, sometimes both functions at once. Their primitive diversity seems to reflect the pursuit of a useful and stable shape. The stone inventory and the techniques of manufacture are so primitive and peculiar that they cannot be classified in the framework of the classic Lower Palaeolithic typology. The nomenclature of the Western European schemes cannot be applied to them."


Below is Fig. 1 from this paper, showing these tools. The article adds that the "archaeological data alone were insufficient to estimate the age of these tools", and that they used other, geological, paleogeographical, and paleontological techniques. There were different opinions among the scholars, with some dating it at no more than 40 ky, while others, including the author of the paper in two articles published in 1964 and 1972, Gaiduk, 1968, and Ceitlin, 1979 placed it in the Lower Pleistocene.

Ulalinka is cited by Dennell, Rendell and Hailwood, 1988 "... the artefacts from the site of Ulalinka in Soviet Central Asia, that were dated to the Olduvai Event (Okladinov & Pospelova, 1982), but need not be older than the Brunhes- Matuyama boundary at c. 0.7 My."

Shunkov, 2005 gives it an old, yet more recent age "The available palaeomagnetic and radiothermoluminescence (RTL) dates suggest attribution of the lowermost layers at Ulalinka to a wide chronological range of c. 300 - 400 ka to 1.5 mya (Okladnikov et al. 1985). The lower chronological boundary seems doubtful, whereas the upper boundary is reliable, supporting the age estimates of the Ulalinka site as older than 300 ka."


However, an older dating is provided by UNESCO in History of civilizations of Central Asia, v. 1: The Dawn of civilization, earliest times to 700 B.C., 1992 (see p. 54), though with some reservations; highlights are mine:


"The site of Ulalinka, within the town of Gornoaltaisk in the northern Altai, gives rise to considerable controversy among specialists. Discovered in 1961, it was excavated overseveral seasons by A. P. Okladnikov. Beneath a four-metre layer of alluvial loam lies a stratum of multicoloured clays resting on boulder deposits. In the lower part of the clay, which geologists ascribe to the Kochorka Eneopleistocene suite, a series of hand-worked pebbles is to be found in a seam of yellow-ochre-coloured clay, containing quartzite boulders and pebbles. Palaeomagnetic analysis suggests that the yellow-ochre is in the Matayama zone of negative magnetization. The thermoluminescent date of the layer that contains the tools is 1.48 million years. [Note: Matayama reversal, or negative magnetization took place between 2.58 and 0.78 million years ago]
The archaeological material is restricted to quartzite tools scattered among the pebbles in the clay. Okladnikov identifies several groups: crude pebble ‘proto-axes’, ‘tools with anextended nose’, crudely made choppers and crude scrapers. Particular attention was paid to laterally split quartzite pebbles with dressed edges and tips. Although these artefacts are comparable in period with the Olduvan industry, their general appearance does not allow direct analogies to be drawn with that site or its typological series. The reason is that Ulalinka lacks both stable designs and, most importantly, the usual signs of deliberate working – the struck crest, surface cutting, precise spalling facets and so on. Okladnik overcomes this difficulty by explaining that the Ulalinka finds are unusual in that the pebbles were split not by striking but by being heated in a fire and then dropped in water. Analysing the formation about this site, it should be noted that until more convincing evidence is available, Okladnikov’s conclusions cannot be unreservedly accepted."


Another online reference (Novosibirsk State University (NSU) in Russia, in english) states that "Ulalinka which lies within the limits of today's Gorno-Altaisk, is the most ancient settlement of primitive man. During the excavation of the Ulalinka site some primitive stone tools were found. The fire technique, that is the heating and quick cooling of stones, was used when making the tools. Ulalinka's finds are dated within the limits of the lower Palaeolithic period - from 150000 BC to 1.5 million years."


The final reference is Zwyns, 2012: "The Ulalinka site was discovered in 1961 by Okladnikov and was intensively investigated starting in 1969. The dating of human occupation at theses sites varies depending of the authors (Maloletko, 1972; Okladnikov, 1972; Gayduk, 1973; Okladnikov and Pospelova, 1982; Ragozin and Shliukov, 1984; Tseitlin, 1986) and doubts have been raised regarding the authenticity of the lithic assemblage (Mochanov, 1976; Medvedev, 1983 quoted after Derevianko et al., 2001). Okladnikov admitted that evidence of percussion is not clear (Okladnikov, 1972) but other scholars observed and described nearly a hundred artifacts (Abramova, 1989)."


Conclusions


The site at Ulalinka is controversial, deemed very old by some, recent by others, or even a hoax. It is part of a trend that reveals several sites in Siberia, far older than accepted in the West, described in papers written in Russian, and therefore, ignored and not cited by Western archaeologists.

Eolithic stone tools: Carter and Texas Street, 100 kya site in San Diego


In a recent post, Imentioned the primitive eoliths, cobble-like eolithic tools described by Florentino Ameghino in the late 1800s, and early 1900s, in deep sediments of the Pampas in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. They are paleolithic, but don't resemble the typical Acheulean tools found in the Old World, and used by Homo erectus.


In this post I will look into the eolithic tools in the San Diego area in USA.


Michael Cremo and Richard Thompson, in their 1993 work Hidden History of the Human Race discuss these early stone tools and mentions other sites besides the ones described by Ameghino. Below I will follow them, and add more references and expand on their comments.


Texas Street Site, San Diego


Eoliths were reported by George Francis Carter (1912-2004) department chair and professor of geography at Johns Hopkins University, who worked at this site when he returned to California after WWII. In 1947 he discovered a large pit on Texas Street in Mission Valley, San Diego, California, USA, and found coarse stone tools and the charred remains of ancient hearths buried under 50 feet (15 m) of alluvial sediments. The areas whith the hearths had stones that had been worked by percussion. Carter said they were cores and choppers, and these areas were identified as workshops.


Based on the geology of the area he realized they were very old. Finally, he published his investigations in 1957/58. The site produced crude cobble-like tools dating back to the interglacial period, and around 80,000 to 100,000 (80-100 ky) old.


He was attacked by critics who attributed natural causes to the formation of these stone tools: natural fires that cracked the stones, stones broken by the action of strong currents in streams, or fractures caused by geologic faults. Some called them "Carterfacts". Carter followed up with his book Earlier Than You Think: A Personal View of Man in America, 1980. And in his his Early Man at San Diego: A Geomorphic-Archaeological View, 1996, refutes these arguments, and adds that "Some have suggested that it could be older than my estimate of 100,000 years... Its history may be more complex than I thought, and if so. it is somewhat older." Carter describes the tools main features as "a cobble with either a natural or prepared platform from which long parallel sided flakes, technically blades. have been struck. There are other artifacts, notably cleaver-like heavy items. resembling a tool called a skreblo in Siberian archaeology, a resemblance noted by Herb Minshall (1974. 1975, 1976, 1986). And there is much use of sharp-edged flakes and cores. There is a total absence of manos and metates, bifacially flaked points, or any other tool typical of any of the later people."

Carter and Homo erectus reaching America first


Carter also mentions the Siberian sites which are 1 million years old (see my post on them) and agrees that they can only be the work of Homo erectus, well adapted to the extreme climate of that region, with fire, clothes, and shelter: "We have never dreamed that Homo erectus had equipment such as I have noted above. But I am told that more such data is emerging in northwestern Europe on something like a 500,000 year time level. In southern California we have the as yet untested claim of the killing and dismembering of a mammoth in the Borrego paleontological beds at the seemingly incredible date of 400,000 years (L'Hommediu 1988)... The possibility of Homo erectus reaching America is very real, if these recent reports stand up. The absence of any Homo erectus skeletal finds is simply negative evidence, and given the American archaeologists' aversion to looking in early formations, weak evidence indeed."


He cited Helena L'Hommedieu, 1988, Evidence Indicates Man Was in Area 500,000 Years B.P. Borrego Sun 37(13):3-4. But this was a newspaper article in a New Mexico media, not in a scholarly journal. However, there is a peer-reviewed article on them: Miller, G. J., Remeika, P., Parks, J. D., Stout, B., & Waters, V. (1991). A preliminary report on half-a-million year-old cutmarks on mammoth bones from the Anza-Borrego Desert Irvingtonian. Imperial Valley College Museum Society, Occasional Paper No. 8. Which suggests the cuts on the bones were made by animals and not by human stone tools. Sounds similar to the Cerutti site (130 ky) where mammoths seem to have been butchered by humans 130 kya.


Reivindication


More recently, Curtis Runnels, 2014 wrote that he had read about Carterfacts, and seen poor photographs of them, and had the opportunity to examine the artifacts discovered by Carter:


"I examined two boxes of materials, a total of about 100 objects, and found that the majority were indeed artifacts of undoubted human workmanship" adding that one particular artifact called his attention: "This piece, which might be described as a proto- or atypical biface or chopping tool would not be out of place in an Old World Palaeolithic assemblage, and the same could be said for the rest of the materials from Texas Street and Buchanan Canyon.
What does this mean? My brief inspection is not enough. Although I am convinced that George Carter and his colleagues found artifacts, it is necessary to re-evaluate their contexts and to subject Carter’s sites and assemblages to more detailed study, preferably backed with radiometric estimates of age using techniques that were unavailable in Carter’s day. Did Carter find unequivocal evidence of humans in the San Diego region as early if not earlier than the last interglacial? It is still too early to tell, but this experience has convinced me that we ignore or discard the early work of the Pre-Clovis proponents only at our peril, and that a full re-consideration of the peopling of the New World must include an objective, unbiased, fresh, interdisciplinary review.

Interestingly, Cremo and Thompson write that Carter was asked to "submit an article about early humans in America. Carter did so, but when the editor sent the article out to two scholars for review, they rejected it. Upon being informed of this by the editor, Carter replied in a letter, dated February 2, 1960: "... I have another anonymous correspondent who as a graduate student found evidence that would tend to prove me right. He and his fellow student buried the evidence. They were certain that to bring it in would cost them their chance for their Ph.D.s. ... At another meeting, a young man sidled up to say, 'In dig X they found core tools like yours at the bottom but just didn't publish them.'""


This is in line with what I have mentioned in a previous post, a cover up to uphold the Clovis-First theory and supress anything related to older sites.


Carter was a pioneer in pointing out the obvious, that there is the possibility that humans, and not necessarily modern ones, reached America and lit fires, and fashioned paleolithic (eoliths) tools. They could have been Homo erectus. The established, formal, archaeologists don't look for these sites, they ignore them even if they spot them. He was an outspoken man who promoted controversial ideas in the days when pre Clovis sites were anathema.

Homo erectus


Although Charles Darwin had speculated in his work The Descent of Man, published in 1871 (p.240), that "It is therefore probable that Africa was formerly inhabited by extinct apes closely allied to the gorilla and chimpanzee ; and as these two species are now man’s nearest allies, it is somewhat more probable that our early progenitors lived on the African continent than elsewhere." So, Darwin was the first to propose an Out of Africa origin for mankind.


But Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919), a German scientist who quickly accepted and promoted Darwin' theory of Evolution through natural selection thought otherwisw.


Haeckel coined the term pithecanthropus (ape-men) and believed that humans had evolved from Catarhini, or Narrow-nosed Apes in South East Asia. Current woke feelings condemn his posture on eugenics, and racial inferiority of some human populations. His writings acceptable in his days would now be considered racist, and derogatory towards dark-skinned peoples, but he was a man of his time when such points of view were acceptable, so we can't apply our modern standards to judge him with hindsight.


Haeckel described a human phylogenetic tree, and addressed practical aspects of human evolution. Even before Darwin's "Descent of Man", he had conjectured about the birthplace of humanity. In 1868 he wrote (see p. 436 Vol. 2 in The History of Creation: "Man, we may feel certain, is descended from Catarhini, or narrow-nosed apes... Of the five now existing continents, neither Australia, nor America, nor Europe can have been this primaeval home, or the so-called "Paradise," the "cradle of the human race." Most circumstances indicate Southern Asia as the locality in question."


Homo erectus discovery


Heaeckel's work inspired a Dutch physician, Eugène Dubois, to explore that region in search of the "missing link" ancestor of the human species. He succeeded, and he discovered the first pithecanthropus, now known as Homo erectus in 1891, at Trinil, a site located on the banks of the Solo River, in Java, in what is now Indonesia. They were ancient, and validated Haeckel's hypothesis. Now we know they are ancient, between 700,000 and 1,500,000 years old.

The Trinil "Java Man" or "pithecantropus erectus" (upright ape man) was the oldest hominin discovered at that time, far older than the European Neanderthals. More erectus remains were discovered near Beijing, China, starting in 1921, at the Zhoukoudian site. These remains were named "Peking Man" (Sinanthropus pekinensis).


Further excavations were conducted at Trinil in the early 1900s but didn't yield any remains.


But, less than one hundred years ago, the situation changed. A member of that expedition, Willem Frederik Oppenoorth had persisted in his quest, and had become the head of the Java Mapping Progran in 1930. He also secured funding to conduct further archaeological research in the region, searching for erectus. Noting the Trinil site's location, Oppenoorth surveyed the Solo River east of it, and struck gold when one of his teams led by Ter Haar discovered some animal fossils on August 27, 1931 close to the village of Ngandong.


They dug at the spot, located 20 m (33 ft) above the level of Solo River and found that it was a rich deposit containing animal fossils entombed by a flood that laid volcanic ashes along a now abandoned river bed.

On September 15, 1931 the dig unearthed hominin remains, they had discovered what we now classify as Homo erectus. Oppenoorth published the findings in 1932 (Solo Man a new fossil skull. Scientific American Sept. 1932, 154–155). He soon realized that the "Solo Man" belonged to the same group as Java Man and Peking Man. Oppenoorth believed that the Indonesian Java Man was the ancestor of the less primitive, and more recent Solo Man, and that both were part of the branch of mankind that led to the Australian Aboriginal people. On the other branch was the Peking Man from northern China,who was the root of the tree that led to Neanderthals in Europe. Man had its roots in Asia. However, he also recognized that these Asian hominins were similar to the African Homo rhodesiensis.


Dubois, who had discovered the Java Man, classed them as human beings, naming them Homo sapiens soloensis (Source).


A few years later, in 1939, von Koenigswald and Weidenreich recognized that Java Man and Peking Man were "related to each other in the same way as two different races of present mankind. Now we know that they were erectus, and so was the Solo Man.

How old was the Solo Man?


At first these remains were believed to be very old, closer to the age of the Java Man, but over the years we learned that they are much more recent, and they may have even co-existed with Modern humans.


Specimens from the Solo River site ad Ngandong were studied by Yokoyama et al. (2008), who calculated an age of 40,000 to 70,000 years for them, which would place them close the the date of arrival of modern humans to the region. Did they overlap with Homo sapiens? Maybe not.


The latest dating of the Solo Man was preformed by Rizal et al., 2020. This study revealed that the terrace above the Solor River in Ngandong was formed between 92,000 and 140,000 years ago and they estimated "ages of 117 to 108 thousand years (kyr) for the H. erectus bone bed, which accumulated during flood conditions. These results negate the extreme ages that have been proposed for the site and solidify Ngandong as the last known occurrence of this long-lived species." This date is earlier than the currently accepted date for the second, and final, Out of Africa migration which is believed to have taken place ~60 kyr ago.


It is possible that modern humans left Afria earlier, or that the first Out of Africa around 120 kya advanced east much further than currently believed and reached Indonesia, instead of the Levant. In either case, Solo Man and Modern humans could have met.


Alternatively, these erectus could have survived and thrived in the region until the arrival of modern humans. We do know that Denisovans lived in this region before modern humans arrived. We ignore if erectus and Denisovans admixing here.


Currently, there is no direct genetic evidence of direct super-archaic admixture in the people who now live in this region (Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, or Australia), see Hudjashov et al., 2007. Perhaps further studies will clarify the matter. But, we recently learned that erectus and Denisovans admixed somewhere in East Asia, and that some of the erectus genes ended up in modern humans via Denisovan-Human interactions.


Some open questions remain: did Solo Man evolve from the original Java Man? or were they closely related "sister lineages" evolving in the same region, both being subspecies of H. erectus?


Interestingly H. erectus has been in Asia for over two million years, which is older than the oldest African erectus fossils. Furthermore, erectus remains were found in Africa far more recently than those discovered in Asia; starting in 1970 Richard Leaky discovered fossils in Koobi Fora, near Lake Turkana, in Kenya, which are 1.75 million years old. In 1984 the erectus Turkana Boy was found there too. It is possible that H. erectus evolved in Asia and then migrated to Africa.


As mentioned in my recent post, they lived in Siberia between 400,000 and 800,000 years ago, showing that they were equally well adapted to the tropical climate of Indonesia and the icy Siberian forests. These adaptable and intelligent hominins were capable of colonizing Africa from Asia, and also, moving on, and reaching America.

2011 Neanderthal sightings in Kemerovo Siberia


Iwas watching a program on History channel that offered different explanations for the Himalayan Yeti (abominable snowman) such as its a bear, its a relict Gigantopithecus ape, its the footprints of deformed human feet, its imagination (Brocken spectre, pareidolia, or a shadow person), and finally, it mentioned some sightings of extant Neanderthals reported in the Kemerovo region of Siberia around 2011-2012, and investigated by Russian scholars. Which is indeed a new alternative,in line with what I have written about on the ancient Patagonian myths of "wild men" (sightings of surviving ancestral hominins in America). For these reasons, I decided to post about it, and look into these sightings and the scientists and organizations that are studying them.


The Kemerovo Sightings


An article published online in 2011 mentions a spike in sightings of the abominable snowman in Siberia in the Kemerovo region noting that it is 3,000 miles (4,800 km) from Moscow, and neighboring Altai (a place where Denisovans and Neanderthals lived for several hundreds of thousands of years, and overlapped there, admixing).


The article mentions an "International Centre of Hominology in Tashtagol, and cites its head, Igor Burtsev (his name was also cited in the History Channel documentary). Burtsey stated that: "When Homo sapiens started populating the world, it viciously exterminated its closest relative in the hominid family, Homo neanderthalensis. Some of the Neanderthals, however, may have survived to this day in some mountainous wooded habitats that are more or less off limits to their arch foes."


Kemerovo is indeed close to Altai (see Google map), roughly 580 km (360 mi) north of the famous Denisova Cave.


Another article describes the sightings: one took place near a village called Misky (see map), where a fisherman called Vitaly Vershinin, who was sailing up the river, saw what he believed to be two people with a bear-like appearance drinking by a river, but when they saw him, they stood up, and walked away, so did he. The man, took a TV crew to the spot, and added that ""they just rushed away, all in fur, walking on two legs, making way through the bushes with two other limbs, straight up the hill, right there."


Some "yeti" hairs were found by an expedition in Kemerovo conducted by Burtsev the previous year (2011), who said that despite the violent interactions between modern humans and Neanderthals "Some of the Neanderthals, however, may have survived to this day in some mountainous wooded habitats that are more or less off limits to their arch foes. No clothing on them, no tools in hands and no fire in the household. Only round-the-clock watchfulness for a Homo sapiens around." I disagree. Neanderthals were sophisticated people, they knew how to make specializeds stone tools, dominated the art of firemaking, and fashioned clothes to protect themselves from the harsh Ice Age climate during the period they thrived in Eurasia, for several hundreds of thousands of years.


I posted about these sightings in 2011 and was looking forward to the outcome of the DNA tests of the tufts of hair recovered in Kemerovo. But these were never disclosed.


The article continues, and also mentions that "Sightings of the creatures in the region have increased three-fold over the past 20 years, prompting scientists at Moscow's Darwin Museum to speculate that there may be a small population of these creatures." (Neanderthals).


Another sighting took place in January 2013 (Source) when a state inspector spotted a yeti in the Shorsky National Park in the Tashtagolski district (see map). A local official, Sergei Adlyakov, said that it didn't look like a bear and vanished in the forest snapping branches off the bushes as it fled.


The final report of an encounter with yetis took plaxe in Kuzbass, when men on a boat navigating the Mras-Su River (see map) spotted, on a rock above the river, "some tall animals looking like people. Our binoculars were broken and did not let us see them sharply. We waved at the animals but they did not respond, then quickly ran back into the forest, walking on two legs."


A 2014 post quotes Igor Burtsev as affirming that "there is an active population of about 30 of the creatures living in the Kemerovo (the region of Mount Shoria) in Siberia to this day"


The "Yeti Expert"


Who is Igor Burtsev? and what is the International Centre of Hominology?


Burtsev is co-author of a research paper about a wild woman that was captured in a forest in the Caucasus (Margaryan A, Sinding MS, Carø C, Yamshchikov V, Burtsev I, Gilbert MTP. The genomic origin of Zana of Abkhazia. Adv Genet (Hoboken). 2021 Jun 14;2(2):e10051. doi: 10.1002/ggn2.10051. PMID: 36618122; PMCID: PMC9744565), in the paper he is credited as affiliated to the " International Center of Hominology, State Darwin Museum, Moscow, Russia." This museum is a serious institution (website).

Burtsev has appeared in some episodes of documentaries about cryptozoology (Cascade Bigfoot Blood Mystery, 2022, and in The Proof is Out There, 2025: Bigfoot Car Chase, Airport UFO, and High School Football Ghost, S.5;Ep. 12 and Siberian Yeti, Amazonian Alien Researcher, and Japanese Wolves Resurrected, S.5; Ep. 14.


A Russian language article states that Burtsev holds a History pHD, but then quotes him as supporting the weird theory put forward by Dr. Melba Ketchum (see my 2012 post about this quack story), who analyzed the DNA of North American samples of Bigfoots. Burtsev says that " It's been absolutely certain that the creature wasn't related to Neanderthals or Denisovans... Besides, 15,000 years ago, representatives of these human species had already disappeared from the face of the Earth—they went extinct... I don't rule out a hypothesis that might seem completely fantastic. Aliens who visited Earth could have been involved in the hybridization. Very unusual DNA was found in the samples analyzed in the United States." When UFOs and aliens are combined in a story involving Bigfoot, it becomes pseudoscience, and therefore placed in the same category as astrology, flat earth, creation science, Bermuda Triangle and similar nonsense.


I found his bio on the ICH website (more on ICH further down):

More on the Eurasian Hominoids


An interesting thesis exploring Soviet science and Darwinism touches the subject of hominoids and the Yeti. It mentions that these scholars believed that the Yeti was a missing link, a relict hominoid, but which one, was an open discussion. somt thought it was related to apes, like the gigantopithcus, while others like Boris Porshnev supported a hominin like the Homo erectus or a Neanderthal, and Petr Smolin thought it was an australopitecine. After deep studies of physical evidence, Porshnev "concluded that Yeti and Neanderthal shared too many traits to be incidental" yet the Yeti was an animal, it degenerated from the intelligent Neanderthal in a backward evolution. This seems to explain why Burtsev suggests that the Neanderthals in Siberia don't make stone tools, don't wear clothes or don't light fires, they are a reversion to an animal form, yet shaped like humans.


In my search about these Siberian sightings, I also came across the work of Dimitri Bayanov, who is the Science Director in the International Centre of Hominology. He is credited with coining the term "hominology" as the study of "hairy bipeds" like bigfoot, almasty, and yeti. For over 30 years he has headed the Smolin seminar focused on hominology at the Darwin Museum in Moscow.


In his essay, Bayanov Historical Evidence for the Existence of Relict Hominoids (The Relict Hominoid Inquiry 1:23-50, 2012) where he addresses the issue of which hominin has survived and embodies the current hominoids sighted in Eurasia:


"One final relevant question: How to correlate relict hominoids with the fossil record of paleoanthropology? According to Krantz (1980), Neanderthals had more traits in common with Homo erectus than with Homo sapiens, so that they “could all be classed with erectus.” He also wrote: “Homo erectus existed for over a million years with relatively little change – a kind of evolutionary plateau – and then was transformed rather quickly into Homo sapiens” (Krantz, 1980). Could it be that today’s wild bipedal homins are relicts of that evolutionary “standstill,” which lasted long enough for them to penetrate and settle the Old World before the advent of Homo sapiens? Adapting to local environments, these pre-sapiens must have more or less departed in their physique from the fossil erectus-grade forms presently known to science. I therefore propose that homins reported in central Eurasia are relicts of the Homo erectus-Neanderthal stage of evolution."


Closing Comments


The idea that surviving Neanderthals, Denisovans, or even Homo erectus have inspired the stories of wild men, or similar hominoids is exciting. It is extremely unlikely yet possible that in the vast wilderness of the Siberian hinterland there are a handful of our ancestors still living in the stone age. The same could apply to South America, or North America. But we need serious science to sift facts from pseudoscientific rubbish (like alien hybrids and similar nonsense).

Siberia to America 400 kya? Very Possible


In my last two posts, I mentioned two Siberina sites that are over 400,000 years old, one is Diring Yuirakh, the other is Karama, both had been originally dated at over 1.5 million years (My), an age that was later revised to a more recent 400 to 800 kya.


These people were not modern humans, our lineage originated 300,000 years ago. They were either Denisovans (who lived in East Asia), Neanderthals on their easternmost reaches, or the predecessor of both groups, Homo heidelbergensis, the tools discovered at both sites are primitive cobble sytle stone tools, older than the Acheulean used by Homo erectus and the Mousterian of the Neanderthals (We don't have tools used by Denisonvans), these Siberian tools resemble the Oldowan industry used in Africa over 2 My ago. These sites could also have belonged to H. erectus, who arrived in Eurasia around 2 My ago.


The sites, located in Siberia, in a cold and harsh region suggest that those who lived there were well adapted to the tough climate. They must have mastered fire, used warm clothes, built decent shelters, and had a good knowledge of their environment. They could have survived futher east and north, all the way to Bering Strait, and beyond.


Could they have advanced and reached America?


In my post on Diring Yuriakh and its age, I mentioned the work of John D. Janssen et al., 2024 (Redrawing early human dispersal patterns with cosmogenic nuclide, EGU24-4168, updated on 08 Mar 2024. https://doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-egu24-4168 EGU General Assembly 2024) which dated the site using a method known as cosmogenic dating. It found its was ancient: "417 ± 82 ka, which is at least 300 kyr earlier than the previously documented earliest human presence north of 60 degrees."


Unsurprisingly, John Janssen is well aware of the implications of this finding regarding the occupation of Siberia at an early date, and the possibility that these people reached Beringia, crossed Bering Strait, and populated America 400,000 years ago. Janssen considers it feasible, and mentions it, as you can see in this video (starting at 21:50 min), where he presentatst the paper at the EGU 2024 conference. In this video, Janssen describes his work on dating ancient sites in Eurasia using the cosmogenic method (that measures the concentrations of rare isotopes that are produced when cosmic rays hit rocks on the surface of the soil. The longer they are exposed, the higher the concentration, which serves as an indicator of its age).


But, at 25:27, the video gets interesting, when discussing the Siberian sites, so close to the Arctic, and America, Janssen states that:


"at the second site Diring we find humans very far north very much earlier than previously thought now nothing older than about 45,000 years ago has been reported from a range of Arctic sites closer to the Arctic Ocean and we see two dimensions to this. Firstly once Out of Africa around about 2.5 million years, say, humans moved Eastward remarkably quickly people were already at Shang Shen as you can see there in the map on the L Plateau by around 2.1 million and they reached Java in the tropical southeast Asia by around 1.5 million years ago now by this time humans were colonizing vast areas of mid to low latitude Eurasia and exploiting habitats as diverses temperate grasslands and tropical rainforests but then it took another million years or more quite a bit more for people to move as far north... and the other point to note here is that while of course there was still around 2,000 km from the Bering Strait it remains possible that people crossed in into North America well before the earliest widely accepted timing which at this point is still around about four 14,000 years ago now I should add there's there's not yet any genomic support for this early colonization idea so it seems that if any very early groups did cross uh into North America they failed to leave a genetic Trace in other words they they must have gone extinct. So what could have motivated these intrepid people to migrate into the chilly Arctic around 400,000 years ago here's one explanation of course earth's climate is always fluctuating and we think humans exploited a time of extraordinary warmth in the Arctic during what we call Super interglacial stage 11 that's this gray band shown in the plot there 9 and as shown by the green spike in the biological productivity in the Arctic there was really no better time in the past 1 million years to do so and this timing is also very interesting for another reason 400,000 years ago coincides with the suggested split in the neander and denisovan lineages. Denisovans are another yet another kind of archaic human and it's been shown by others that there probably exists a super archaic species known not from fossils but from DNA found in the sediments at the basal sediments of the Denisova cave in in the Altai. So I said before that we don't really know, uh, who these people were but there is an intriguing possibility that the Diring migrants were actually a group of archaic humans, uh, predating the Denisovans whose ancestry we only know thanks to work on the denisovan genome."


I am thrilled that a mainstream scholar suggested that Homo erectus people moved across Bering and entered America around 400,000 years ago. The lack of genetic imprint in the current Amerindians may not mean that they went extinct. Perhaps they left their admixed genes in the Native Americans but the "Great Dying" wiped this signal away when over 90% of the natives died following the contact with Europeans after 1492.


Other Scholars Who Have Suggested an Early Peopling of America


My research into Siberian sites led me to discovering some Russian academics and archaeologists mostly unknown to Western mainstream media. Sure, Western specialists in this field must know them, but I haven't seen them cited in the papers I have read about the subject, so maybe they are dismissed.


One of these scientists is Yuri A. Mochanov. I came across a review of his book Archaeology, the Paleolithic of Northeast Asia, a Non-Tropical Origin for Humanity, and the Earliest Stages of the Settlement of America, that he coauthored with Svetlana A. Fedoseeva, Richard L. Bland, and Roy L. Carlson. The review can be accessed in the Canadian Journal of Archaeology (Reviews, Vol. 32, No. 2 (2008), pp. 285-288. https://www.jstor.org/stable/41103634). The reviewer, Christy G. Turner II, mentions that "In 2001, I was much impressed, but not convinced, by Mochanov's arguments for a much earlier colonization of the New World than Clovis-era people. This discussion lasted long into the night in an Irkutsk hotel room, with Olga Pav- lova translating and Svetlana Fedoseeva, Mochanov's wife, offering frequent comments... Mochanov and Fedoseeva's work at Diring was the first to demonstrate that hominids were in Siberia long before Neandertals and modern humans arrived. Various dates for Diring and the chopper-chopping tool nature of the Diring artifacts hint at groups of East Asian Homo erectus roaming far north of those whose remains were found at the Lower Cave of Zhoukoudian near Beijing, China (about 40° N latitude)."


Feidel S., 2000 cites Mochanvov and then elaborates on his hypothesis of an early peopling of America:


"Yuri Mochanov, have been regarded skeptically, but thermoluminescence dates now suggest an age between 260,000 and 370,000 B.P.for this site, at 61°N latitude (Waters et al., 1997). If Middle Pleistocene hominids were capable of survival so far north, what would have prevented them from crossing Beringia and entering the Americas at a comparably early date (Butzer, 1991, p. 140)? Perhaps Homo erectus did get into the New World, but there is no acceptable archaeological evidence of a mid-Pleistocene human presence. However, Bryan (1978) photographed and described a poorly provenienced H. erectus-like cranium that subsequently disappeared from the Brazilian museum, where it had been stored. [see my post on this skull and also an article by Bryan, 1984, with pictures of the skull] Also in Brazil, a few alleged pebble tools have been reported from Level IV of Esperança Cave, associated with fossil bones dated to ca. 295,000 B.P. by the uranium–thorium method (de Lumley et al., 1988; see Lynch, 1990, for a skeptical assessment). If 250,000-year-old human occupation sites exist in the Americas, they should be as recognizable and recoverable as Old World sites of this age... there has been little controversy about Australian sites with relatively crude toolkits dating earlier than 30,000 years ago, Beaton (1991, p.213)..."


Regarding this final comment, I must point out that archaeologists in America are skeptical about ancient sites, they don't look for them, and ignore them or consider the tools geofacts or made by monkeys (see Coutouly, 2021 as an example). This has been pointed out by archaeologists like Boëda, 2014 who notes that "All sites predating 13,000 years ago are rejected, including by the discoverers themselves. This rejection applies equally to sites in North and South America, with arguments that the artifacts are not of human origin and/or that the stratigraphy is inconsistent and/or that the dating is insufficient, etc. The paradigm is all-powerful. Perhaps most surprising is that the scientific criteria required to validate the oldest remains are far from being as systematically applied to more recent sites. Similarly, upon reading these criticisms, it appears that some of them stem more from a principled opposition to the dominant model than from a scientific discussion presenting arguments and counter-arguments." (I have already posted about the opposition by Clovis-first supporters against older sites and an early peopling of America).


Regarding the remark by Beaton, 1991, his work compares the peopling of Australia and America, the attitudes of archaeologists in both regions, and discusses the different populating strategise. He is an inmpartial observer, not influenced by the Clovis notions, he is critical in his observations, and remarks that "The idea of truly Early Man in the Americas is an exciting one, as it would imply immigration of pre-sapiens Homo and the very strong likelihood of failed colonization and the first evidence for the extinction of Homo on a continental-sized land mass. For the uncommitted observer, however, as interesting as such biogeographic phenomena might be, they do not in themselves make a case for Early Man in America, and the presentation of evidence in support of Early Man is itself not convincing." I agree, strict methodology, and structuring the evidence is critical in supporting and building the case for a very early peopling of America. Borrero, 2015 admits that "Sadly, information for South America is still not always efficiently produced. Ambiguous but ambitious claims from places like Arroyo Vizcaíno, in Uruguay, or Vale da Pedra Furada in Brazil, are still prominen."


Beaton also puts forward an intelligent question that is thought provoking: "Australia and the Americas... were the recipients of the last continental colonizations. This occurred at roughly the same time in human history, and the source for the colonists was roughly the same. Yet, in the space of 40 (or so) thousand years, these continents became the stages for the playing out of very different cultural evolutionary trajectories. It is not a trivial question to ask how this came about.
In the Americas, archaeologists appear to take cultural differentiation at face value and do not question how it might be that in the space of a few hundred miles Great Basin hunters remained so apparently distant in cultural morphology from the fishers of the northwest coast. While the answer might seem terribly obvious that living in a high desert is quite a different matter from living on a very wet coast, Australianists could point to equally wet-dry environment zones, of equal nearness, where no such cultural differentiation occurred. Australianists might view their prehistoric record as indicating distinctive regional cultural differences, but the scale of these differences is intracontinental and takes on a very different coloration when compared with complexities in cultural morphologies in the Americas. One research problem that would appear to benefit greatly from an intercontinental perspective is that of colonization. Questions relating to foraging patterns, colonizing strategy, population history, and cultural evolution may be better phrased, and ultimately understood, for each continent with consideration of the other.
"


Beaton points out the incongruences: "Australianists will be equally impressed by the lack of credible pre-13,000-15,000 B.P. sites in the Americas. But if claims for sites of such an age are to be preferred by the "Early Man" and "pre Clovis" schools, then does this imply Homo erectus in the New World and extinctions of some early colonists? And how can it possibly be that so many of the claims for early dates come from sites in South America? Australianists might also be interested to hear from the American conservative school on the subject of how it is that in the space of only 13,000-15, 000 years the Americas, at the continental scale, have witnessed such extraordinarily high degrees of cultural experimentation and differentiation. What factors might account for this? Population, environment, unrestrained social vitalism?"


This criticsm prods both Clovis-firsters and those supporting a pre-Clovis peopling of America to up their game, improve their methods, strategies, and review or revamp their hypothesis.


The diversity of languages is a great point (See my posts on this matter), how did America develop such a variety in such a short span of time?


Regarding pre-sapiens presence, almost all genetic studies are below par. They usually include proxies for genuine Amerindians with people of mixed origins like a Peruvian from Lima (PEL), Colombian from Medellin (CLM), Mexican from Los Angeles (MXL), or a Puertorican (PUR) which also carry European and African admixture. Some studies ignore America altogether considering it recently populated. Neanderthal and Denisovan introgression is assumed to have been brought from Asia. The alternative, that Neanderthals or Denisovans reached America and admixed there with modern humans is not even considered. Conclusions are therefore based on limited data, tainted data, or prejudiced hypothesis. Every paper about Amerindians, their genetics, and diseases always points out their recent origin and European and African admixture. I doubt that any scientist has tried to identify markers that could have introgressed into genuine Amerindians before the European discovery of 1492, and the slave trade from Africa that began shortly after. If we can pinpoint bases in our DNA strands inherited 30,000 years ago from Denisovans, that in turn added some bases they got from mating with H. erectus, how can't we distinguish between recent and ancient European or African admixture?


And when it comes to the sites themselves, just one look at the scale of excavations undertaken in Siberia at the Diring Yuirakh site, moving several meters of topsoil, or the deep bit dug at Karama, I insist, once again, that nobody digs deep enough to find Early Pleistocene sites in America.


Mental blocks and prejudice also damage the cause of an early peopling of America. For instance, take the folliwng comment by Borrero, 1991: "ancient Korean industries have been invoked to justify the morphology of the material recovered in northeastern Brazil. The argument maintains that "The cobble industries that persisted in East Asia for more than a million years reflect original technological solutions" (Boéda et al. 2013: 446) and that the case of Boqueirão in Brazil is similar. One problem with this argument is that it was not Homo sapiens who produced the cobble industries throughout that period, which implies a completely different reality (Dennell 2009; Rabett 2012). Ultimately, the comparison with Korea is irrelevant." As you can appreciate Borrero does not admit that cobble-making non-sapiens people could have reached America and used this lithic industry in Brazil. So, yes, the comparison with Korea is relevant.


Returning to Butzer, 1984 he admits that it was "techincally" feasible for humans to have moved "from Asia into more productive regions of the New World for tens of millennia prior to 30,000 B.P." so the idea itself is acceptable. The problem is the evidence: "But the coeval record of prehistoric settlement in eastern and northern Asia is poor (Aigner 1981, 1984; Wu and Olsen 1985; Ikawa-Smith 1978; Aikens and Higuchi 1982; Larichev et al. 1987), and there still is no convincing record of such antiquity in Canada or the United States." He goes on, accepting the possibility of a Mid-Wisconsinan (~50-25 kya) entry into America "Human groups, physically less advanced than modem Homo sapiens peoples and with an unsophisticated middle Paleolithic (Mousterian) technology, settled the European tundra to within close proximity of the ice fronts in both western and eastern Europe (e.g., Butzer 1986; Hoffecker 1987). Several late Acheulian sites were already located in tundra environments. Sites of such age have been found in caves, in the former floodplains of small streams, as well as in valley-margin deposits of colluvial loess. Unless we are unwilling to ascribe similar mental and cultural capacities to East and North Asian peoples during early and mid-Wisconsinan time, it is possible, even plausible, that they did penetrate the New World under harsh climatic conditions."


Butzer offers many interesting tips on locating older sites, and calculates how scarece they are. It is an interesting paper that is worth reading.


Closing comments


It is encouraging to see that the tide is changing. An early presence of humans (Denisovans or even Homo erectus) in Siberia half a million years ago shows that they were capable of living in the harsh and freezing conditions of the northeastern limits of Eurasia. At that time, America and Asia were linked (during the successive ice ages) by viable land bridges with fauna that would have enabled them to walk across it and, leaving Asia, enter America.


The high prevalence of a Denisovan genetic imprint in Amerindians may be a sign of their survival over hundreds of thousands of years in the New World, and their intermingling, within the Americas, with the Homo sapiens latecomers.

Karama site in Siberia: 500-800 ky old


Following yesterday's post on a site known a Diring Yuriakh in northeastern Siberia that is 400,000 years old, today's post will look at another ancient Siberian site known as Karama which is just 15 km (less than 10 miles) from the famous Denisova Cave in the Altai.

Non-sapiens humans lived there 400,000 - 800,000 years ago

According to an online article this region, at that time had a relatively benign climate, and a forest cover with animal resources that favored settling there. But these were not modern human beings (we appeared ~300,000 years ago), these people were possibly Denisovans, Neanderthals, or even their predecessors, H. heidelbergensis or Homo erectus who fashioned cobble tools similar to the primitive Oldowan lithic industry:


"The earliest evidence of penetration of the Paleolithic man into the Altai is the Karama site dating back 400–800 thousand years. In red-color deposits of the lower Pleistocene, some large-size pebbles were found with roughly chopped-off sharp edges used as primitive stone implements like side scrapers, choppers, and choppings, which constituted the pebble-tool industry typical of the early Paleolith epoch. In that age, the climate in the Anui Valley was mild and favorable for the life of the primitive man. The occurrence of such deciduous species as elm, hornbeam, linden, maple, and oak, exotic for the contemporary flora of the Altai, in the birch and pine forests of the region testify to it. Numerous and diverse fauna inhabited the rich vegetation of the forests. Small and medium-sized mammals such as badger, marmot, hare, etc., made a significant part of the diet of hunters of the time. As for large prey, primitive men used to make a living by gathering the remains of meals of such predators as hyenas, wolves, or bears."


Most of the literature on this site is in Russian language (thank God there is a Google translating tool!). The site was excavated by Anatoly P. Derevianko and published in 2001 and 2002 according to his colleague M. Shunkov, both from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.


These appear to be the first two publications on Karama, and they are cited in the literature, but I have not been able to find them:

One paper, Early Paleolithic Site of Karama in Altai: Initial Research Results, Archaeology, ethnography and anthropology of Eurasia 3 (23) 2005, provides an dating, when it ncludes that "Taken together, the palynological study materials of the section, along with other analytical data, allow us to correlate the accumulation time of the deposits in the middle and lower strata of the section with the Early Neopleistocene, i.e., to determine their age in the range of 400,000-800,000 years."


The old date for this site is ratified by a presentation given by A. P. Derevianko, M. V. Shunkov, 2008: Early Paleolithic of Altai, see p. 127 in the abstracts listed which provides sediment dating for this Early Paleolithic site.

An article about Derevyanko (who seems to be an authority on Denisovans and their migrations across Asia), includes the image shown above, which depicts: on the upper left side, the Karama site, the same image can be seen in Derevyanko and Shunkov's 2005 paper captioned Fig. 1. View of the Karama site in the Anuy Valley., the lower left stone tool is seen in Fig. 17 of that same paper as Fig. 17. "2 - beak-shaped tool", and the excavation (lower righgt) can be seen in the paper as Fig. 9, the excavation #2 at Karama -but full of diggers.


Cobble, Oldowan-like tools


Shunkov, 2005 (English) describes the stone tools as follows: "... Paleolithic artifacts, which have been attributed to the Lower Paleolithic pebble industry judging form the morphology of the finds. The assemblage of the products of primary reduction include pebbles showing signs of core preparation with plain striking platforms and negative scars of parallel detachments and short non-faceted spalls. The collection of typologically distinct tools includes longitudinal and transverse racloirs; denticulate and notch-denticulate tools fashioned on short spalls, and cutting tools of the chopper/chopping tool type with a convex flattened cutting edge and a trimmed massive back. Most pebble tools from Karama are characterized by archaic morphological features and a comparatively advanced technology of secondary treatment." So they are primitive (cobbles) yet their finishing is advanced.


The original dates for the site were much earlier 1.77 to 1.95 million years, but it was refined to a lower limit of 800,000 years (see Kuzmin, Y.V., Kazanskii, A.Y., 2015 in Debatable questions of Siberia settlement by early humans. Stratigr. Geol. Correl. 23, 114–118 (2015). https://doi.org/10.1134/S0869593815010074) who writes: "... Judging by the results of a preliminary study of the Zasukhino site in Trans-Baikal, early humans could have appeared in Siberia about 1 million years ago, but additional research is required in order to obtain reliable information..." Regarding Karama, he this paper considers that the site "corresponds to MIS 16–19", roughly 620,000 to 780,000 years ago.


Regarding the stone tools, this paper confirms the technology employed by the people at Karama and, again, its antiquity:


"Archaeological materials of Karama are represented by Early Paleolithic pebble industries. They are characterized by irregular and parallel flaking. The primary flaking products include core-like pebbles with smooth or roughly prepared striking platforms, as well as flakes with sub parallel dorsal patterns and prepared platforms. The tool set is dominated by longitudinal, diagonal and transverse side-scrapers (as a rule naturally-backed or negative-backed), followed by massive-base choppers with straight, convex, or concave working edge. Next in importance are notches, denticulates and beaked tools formed mainly by Clactonian notches. The rest of the inventory is constituted by large pebble tools with an intentionally shaped thorn-like projection, core-like endscrapers formed by steep or abrupt retouch, massive tools with wide-angle working part, knives on “citrus slices” with clear traces of utilization, flakes bearing intermittent retouch.
Thus the site of Karama contains a sequence of Early Paleolithic horizons occurring in clear stratigraphic conditions. They yielded an expressive pebble industry, which can tentatively be dated to the period of 600–800 kya. For the time being this is the oldest archaeological assemblage with reliable stratigraphic and palynological data known in Northern and Central Asia.

A similar content is found in another paper by Kuzmin and Kazansky, 2019 (Chronology of the Lower Palaeolithic Site of Karama (Gorny Altai): Facts and Problems, Stratum plus. 2019. No 1), whose abstract places it not older than 800 kya. It reads as follows:


"Factual information and its interpretation regarding the geological age of the Lower Palaeolithic site of Karama (Altai Mountains, Siberia) are considered. It is demonstrated that palynological data do not allow to date this site to earlier than ca. 800 kya; archaeological data are consistent with this estimate. The viewpoint of V. S. Zykin with coauthors, according to which the age of Karama is ca. 1.95—1.77 mya, finds no support in the light of the available geological and paleomagnetic evidence. The so-called “Karama suite” of the Upper Pliocene of Altai Mountains in reality does not exist. For the time being there are no reliable data indicating than the initial peopling of Siberia took place prior to ca. 1 mya."


Siberia to America?


This post and the previous one have shown the presence of humans in Northern Siberia long before the previously accepted dates. 500,000 to 800,000 years ago some humans (Denisovans? H. erectus? H. heidelbergensis? were thriving in this region, fashioning tools that were primitive (not the Acheulean tools of erectus, or Mousterian tools of Neanderthals). Again, it makes one wonder, why didn't they continue their journey across Siberia and reach America?

Diring Yuriakh site: Ancient humans in Siberia ~400 kya


The Diring Yuriakh site in Central Siberia shows that some humans reached the area long ago, well before modern humans had evolved in Africa, and more or less contemporary with the Denisovan and Neanderthal split. This was at least one hundred thousand years before Homo sapiens appeared.


But Siberia was a harsh environment, and the tools don't resemble Neanderthal Mousterian tool technology, it is more "primitive". Who were these humans braving the cold Siberian winters 400,000 years ago?

I found a very old (nearly 40 years old!) article in Science, Diring Yuriakh: A Lower Paleolithic Site in Central Siberia 🔒 by Forman, Pierson and Waters (1997) discussing the site and its archaic tools. (See it here too 🔓)


This paper mentions the accidental discovery of a site along the Lena River in Siberia, a spot known as Diring Yuriakh where stone tools were unearthed (see it in Google Maps). These were not natural (geofacts) stones, but man-made. The site was excavated by Mochanov, 1992 🔒, who believed they were very ancient, 1.8 to 3.2 million years old, which would place the makers of the tools found there in the Homo erectus or Homo habilis time period. Other researchers suggest a later date of 800,000 years (800 kya) to 1 million years, which would make them H. erectus or possibly the common ancestors of Denisovans and Neanderthals.


According to Richards, 1994, Y. A. Mochanov presented a paper in 1992 at the 45th Annual Northwest Anthropology Conference (The Earliest Palaeolithic of Northeastern Asia and the Problem of the Extratropical Cradle of Man) which gave thermoluminescence dating calculated by O.A. Kulikov of over 1.1 million years (My) for layer 6, 2.9 + 0.96 My for layer 5, and more than 1.8 My for layer 4. Richards recommends caution when considering those dates.

The dates provided in the paper from 1997 (resulting from a 1993 samples obtained at the site), are a minimum of 260,000 years, and a maximum of around 370,000 years, on average, 300,000 years. Interestingly, Mochanov had previously reported other sites with similar artifacts in the same sedimentary layer, and hence, of the samey age, at 14 other sites along a 800 km (500 mi) section of the Lena River in Northeastern Siberia.


This site is very close to America, just 3,000 km west (1,880 miles) of Alaska.


How did these people survive in this bleak northern environment? The paper suggests that the people who lived here probably did so during a warm spell at the end of glacial period known as MIS 8 (Marine Isotope Stage 8) which spanned a period from 300 to 243 kya. Another option is the warmer interglacial stage 7 period (245-190 kya). But, even during the warmest summers, the climate would have been very cold, requiring the use of fire, warm clothing, and effective shelter strategies. This indicates that these people were well adapted to the harsh conditions of Siberia. How long they stayed here, or how much territory they coccupied is not known.


Simple Stone Tools


The image further up depicts some tools from this site, which look quite primitive. The paper reports finding over 4,000 artifacts, mostly cores and flakes. Around 500 of them are "unifacial pebble choppers core scrapers, and scraper planes. A few tools made from flakes are present in the assemblage."


Mochanov characterizes these tools as follows: "these tools more closely resemble those from Olduvai Gorge than from any other Early Pleistocene site, leading the author to ponder the possibility of a non-tropical origin for humanity." Indeed, the Olduvai tool industy is the most primitive one, and also the oldest. The Homo erectus later developed their Acheulean stone tool technology, an advance on the Oldowan one.


Now we know that the period suggested by the 1997 paper (260 to 370 kya) would have spanned the time that Denisovans were living in Eastern Asia together with Neanderthals on its western fringes. We don't have Denisovan toolkits for comparison, but the Mousterian tools of the Neanderthals were far more advanced than the Oldowan. This opens up the possibility that some well-adapted archaic hominin, probably even earlier than the erectus, or a group that opted for simple tools and not the Acheulean ones of the erectus, lived in the cold northern parts of eastern Siberia.


An archaeology blogger (NeilB, 1016) analyzed the data objectiely and concluded that "Verdict: Site inhabited ca. 300, 000 years ago. Likely candidates Homo erectus or Homo heidelbergensis.".


2024 Research places the age of Diring Yuriakh at 400 kya


More recently, a 2024 paper by John D. Jansen et al., (Redrawing early human dispersal patterns with cosmogenic nuclide, EGU24-4168, updated on 08 Mar 2024. https://doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-egu24-4168 EGU General Assembly 2024) used cosmogenic dating to date several Paleolithic sites in Europe, and also the Diring Yuriakh site, where they found "an age of 417 &plusm; 82 ka, which is at least 300 kyr earlier than the previously documented earliest human presence north of 60 degrees. This timing overlaps with exceptional warmth across the High North during the ‘super-interglacial’ MIS 11c (426–396 ka), suggesting that warm climate intervals permitted human migration well beyond widely accepted territorial bounds."


Janssen immediately understood the significance of such an old date in such a northerly location. He immediately suggested that these people could have moved on eastwards and reached America. But this will be the subject of a future post.


My next post will look into another site around 500 to 800 ky old, with cobble-styled stone tools close to the famous Denisova Cave, the Karama Site on Anui River, in the Altai, and then we will explore the subject of an early peopling of America by archaic humans from Siberia 400,000 or even more years ago.
