Because, I have searched all over the net trying to verify pretty much everything you've posted on your site, and so far have gotten little. Would help if you provided more info on hippos, water tigers and bulls, and so on. Could the creatures described here have simply been Gaint Otters? They have dark colored fur and may look kind of dog-like to someone whose never seen an otter before.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_river_otter

This close up of one with only its head out looks kind of dog-like in the face:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a2/Giant_Otter_Anjo.JPG

And this one is a dark brown almost black color and looks kind of shiny:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Giant_otter_2.JPG

Vocalizations from wikipedia:
"Quick HAH! barks or explosive snorts suggest immediate interest and possible danger...while a low growl is used for aggressive warning."

So,they apparently make dog-like sounds.

That would also explain why they were discovered as living partially in the water.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8137409915847697670.post-66286790468998618392010-01-25T14:13:45.314-03:002010-01-25T14:13:45.314-03:00Thank you for your comments. Mapuche legends are very interesting, and not only those compiled in Chile by Latcham, Lenz, Guevar or Vicuña Cifuentes. Try also Bertha Koessler Ilg, Gregorio Alvarez and Cesar Fernandez(in Argentina). They are all in Spanish, but perhaps there are German or English translations.
Regarding Trehuaco, I have only found those stories shown above.
All the Best
AustinAWhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11389280995003336103noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8137409915847697670.post-90154641031906734712010-01-21T21:10:41.106-03:002010-01-21T21:10:41.106-03:00sorry, should have said, sources in english... as ...sorry, should have said, sources in english... as I have only basic spanish language skills....Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8137409915847697670.post-50097283030317557802010-01-21T21:08:56.047-03:002010-01-21T21:08:56.047-03:00What an interesting project!
